It already has begun to make a difference.  We're talking about it, despite your best efforts to prevent that.

How so?  Think DCI is going to do anything?

And what did I do to prevent anything?  Get a grip!

So rename the NBA because there's a team in Toronto?

Rename the World Series because the two participating teams are from the US?

no, that stays because only two participating players are from the US.

True. At some point the National Basketball Association may re-brand itself. The NBA has been pretty progressive compared to other sports. If we see a few more teams from Asia or Europe compete in the same league, maybe a GBA will begin (Global Basketball Association).

As for MLB, there is no doubt the rest of the baseball world can produce some incredible teams. Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, obviously Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and more. How about the Netherlands from this past World Baseball Classic!  However, those are national teams. When it comes to full-tournament teams in a league it is recognized world over that the MLB in the United States is the best, primarily because we see most of the best players from the world over playing in the MLB. Almost all of the best players from those national teams I mentioned above, including those from the Gold Medal U.S. team, all play in the MLB.  So when the best two teams meet with the World Series it truly is considered a WORLD series.

Drum Corps International may not always feature a lot of corps from around the world at Finals in Indianapolis. It's really nice when some of them can attend. We've seen some from Japan, Europe, Taiwan, and Canada attend in past years. Hoping to see more. But by in large the instructors world over will attest to the dominance of the top 15 or so drum corps in the United States as the best anywhere in the world.  All those corps from other countries know that they are welcome to attend DCI Quarters, Semis, and Finals to compete in this international competition. Sadly, most other countries do not have the infrastructure that allows for these groups to flourish. Even here in the U.S. we have had to fight to keep some drum corps alive. Of all places, we may get some stiff competition from Japan (even without football as a part of their public schools).  Look at how Japan has progressed in marching band, with many of their top marching bands and concerts bands being some of the best you will ever see and hear. If they wanted to I could see them setting up a local circuit in Japan, with a few of their best groups coming over to Indy in August.  As it is right now, band is a bigger deal over there.  It is in America too, but that public school band infrastructure has setup DCI quite nicely.

California will not secede from the United States as has been suggested in some quarters( for a host of reasons ). But if it did, it would cause DCI migraine headaches of the higest magnitude to have to decide how they could get around not having to then put the Blue Devils ( and the other current WC Div. Corps from Cali) into DCI's " International Class Division ".

Don't forget -- there's talk of the NFL expanding to London.   They already play several regular season games there with US teams.  Also hearing rumors of Germany.

It's aimed at dinosaurs who expect, if not demand DCI to either go back on course or change its callsign and stop pretending to be something it hasn't been in a long time.  In their mind, they have no reason to change that callsign because it's still warm bodies wriggling around on a football field and, perhaps more importantly, George Hopkins hasn't asked them to change it yet.  When it becomes his master-stroke of an idea, then it'll happen faster than than a BD scatterdrill.

There's no reason in the world a corps couldn't field a line of bugles today. They'd have to re-allocate resources in order to be able to afford to purchase and maintain bugles......perhaps, say, forgoing amplification and electronics, or brand new uniforms, or the giant scaffolding that sits in the middle of the field.....but you know what?  That would be just fine with a lot of people.  Might even bring some former fans back to the activity.

But we're supposed to no longer think of it that way, according to these guys, because that kind of thinking doesn't suit their agenda, nor their narrative.

EDIT: And you know what that tells me?  This truly isn't all for nothing.  If movers and shakers in the activity are going on record to try to refute concerns of where it's headed, that means those concerns ARE being heard, despite the tangible and organized effort to prevent that.  That doesn't make me want to give in and accept that it's too late.  No, that simply makes me want to voice my concerns even more.  I know there are like-minded individuals reading this, whether you post here or not, and I strongly urge you to do the same, because this podcast is tangible evidence that it DOES make a difference.

no it wouldn't. because a majority of the fans bemoaning the lack of bugles...which by definition we havent had since they added a valve....would still complain about modern show design.

This is an argument that traditionalists can never hope to win. Just like on the podcast anyone who expresses concern about the direction of the activity can be effectively shouted down as an old timer who just doesn't understand.  The proponents of today's changes are so ENTHUSIASTIC about it that the notion that everyone doesn't love it doesn't even seem possible, therefore such an opinion is invalid.

Like one guy said about DCI evolving. It didn't evolve. It was co-opted by the WGI crowd and mutated into something completely different. That doesn't make it invalid. But it's no longer Drum Corps.

If we took WGI ouside on a football field, cut the electronics and pre-recorded stuff, put people in traditional uniforms with shakos, added 80 bugles, and...marched, would it still be WGI?

brass instruments? check.

percussion instruments? check

color guard? check

all of them doing vastly different things than when drum corps started? check. You know like when there were no contras. You started on the end zone. you had inspection. you had concert. you had the mandatory color presentation. brass and percussion and guard instruments have all changed A LOT since the beginning of the activity.it's called technology.
