People on this board have pointed out the Oakland Crusaders score many times when referencing a corps to not make Finals while winning a caption, so I think it's appropriate, and pretty amazing.

I was wondering what the chances would be today in DCI for a Corps to win... say Guard... in Prelims, but fail to to make Finals.  I suppose the same chances that any of us here will be selected into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame someday.

It's amazing, but it's also a testament to how different the competition is today and the judging.  In 1977:

  • 45 Corps competed in Prelims.  It went on for two days.
  • The Championships were the first time all of the top corps competed in the same show
  • Touring was much more limited
  • Order of appearance in prelims was random.  There was no seeding or telegraphing to the judges where corps should be placed.
  • The tick system was in place.
  • Judges were seeing some of the corps for the first time.
  • Scores, in general, were much more volatile from show to show.

1977 was the first year Crossmen made finals and we had no clue after we performed and saw our score whether we would make it.  It wasn't apparent for a few hours that we would.  There were so many corps we never competed with before.

I wonder when in Prelims the Oakland Crusaders competed.  Does anyone know?  Early in the competition?  Late in the competition?  Middle?

A couple things, in 77 we had two tours, three weeks mid june to early july, two weeks at home for local shows, and then off late July until Nationals, which were a week later than today's championships. We were on the road a lot.

There was a block on the last day of prelims for the previous year's top 12 and a few corps who were competitive in that strata, which Oaklands were in. We went on just after Bridgemen and before Cavaliers (I think). The order was random for the top 20 or so and according to postmark for entry for everyone else.

We were leading the pack in drum scores for a few weeks, and having looked at some of the recaps since last night, by a lot compared to today's one tenth spreads.

Regards,

John

Yep.  That's how prelim order was determined BITD.  That's how we went on second to last in 76 (Pioneer was last in prelims).

Going on late in prelims and early in finals on the same day was a recipe for disaster however.   Thankfully, it was changed in '77 to two days.
