BigW
The Cabs Alumni wrapped up the show in good weather (it rains on them more than anyone likes for some reason) and this time, I got to listen from a much better vantage point. I think the brass might be slightly smaller, but they seem to be deeper and more cohesive right now. I'm hearing a lot more mid and bottom from the corps and it gives them a really strong, dark character. I'll call out the Mello feature as really great to listen to, and what he's playing is a challenge. He's doing a lot of really clear work on the low end of the horn, which isn't easy. They'll tend to lose focus and pitch center down there and get really fuzzed out, and this cat makes everything happen tight and proper. The traditional bugling solos were really crisp as well, very 60's old school and excellent. Year in and out, they're consistently solid, a tweak here and there to the programming bringing in old and new, and they're always fun. Must go- hopefully I'll have no 500 errors for Nazareth, a big show... and I think my last full review of the season. See you there!
