It's like adding salt and pepper to your burger while cooking, and then adding mustard and onion after cooking. The burger is the main ingredient and additions were made. If the base idea stays in tact (for the most part) and additional ideas are added ON TOP of that base idea, then to me that is Layering. onionhead
adjudicator's actually developed this term to quantify the scores awarded the specific corps according to the amount of greenbacks they have been layered with for their good judgement.

Think of it as icing on the cake. You can put icing over a steaming turd but ultimately you still have a steaming turd. So Crown layering and cleaning at the same time is what, polishing the turd? Sorry, but changes can be made before cleaning and you can still see the results in the scores. Crown is nowhere near as clean as they need to be, but because of changing multiple things up and layering, they've seen a good bit of score jumps in the past 2 ish weeks. Take the turd and throw it back in the toilet sir. You never should've pulled it out in the first place.

I think it really just refers to the fact that some shows change a lot over the course of a season (Crown and BD 2015) while others change very little (Bluecoats 2016, 2017). A layer is just a weird way of saying that something in a show didn't make much sense and so a certain visual change or addition of narration, guard characters, etc added clarity. Or a certain musical phrase lacked complexity in dynamics or texture or proper resolution and it was added in later on over the course of a season. This. No reason to read any further.
