it's the same attitude i see from veteran teachers and administrators in public education. they'd rather hire somebody with a proven history of knowing what they're doing than take a chance on having to train somebody who becomes needy.

You are obviously not from New Jersey. They look to hire the cheapest teachers on the pay scale. Experience? Nah... Just save a few grand by getting someone lower on the pay ladder.

and in NY and CT, they are bound by seniority clauses...no matter how (in)effective the teacher is today; therefore, much dead wood still floating and few spots for new teachers. New college Music Ed and Music performance teachers mass migrate to Texas and Florida the day after graduation.

our hiring committees never even have to consider that when deciding who to hire for a position

Being FROM New Jersey is the best thing that ever happed to us. A great place to be from, gives you excuses for all kinds of bad behavior that is not tolerated elsewhere. Get out when your young.

1), I go back to the 60's when the baby boomers filled the corps there were more of us = more corps

2). I go back to the 60's where their would be less corps showing up for nationals than we had this year in Indy. Got to show up to be counted in my book.

Half Full or Half Empty

How wonderful it is to have all these corps today. Your not missing anything. The youth today didn't need to be Boomers!!!!!

Look at VFW Nats from 64-70, 1st place through 4th place. Of the 28 available slots, 27 of them were filled by the same 6 corps. Heck, the Cavies and Troopers themselves filled 13 of them in that timeframe.

Wonder who the teacher's union supports in most elections?

Yes I seen that the "more corps theory" is in question? However the myth that the corps practice more today is in doubt as well.

1) The season was a month and a half longer

2) Corps practiced 2 week nights year round.

3) Winter Drill Occurred on the Weekends - Inside the Armories, YMCA's or just outside in the Cold.

4) Held a Spring Camp around work schedules

Add it all up vs cramming everything into the tour and a few camps and there may not be much difference?

Be interesting to do the math and see what happens. Certainly today, with move-in and spring training, the time is more focused and dedicated to just doing drum corps. We had scholastic and other things happening back in the pre-DCI day that also required focus and time.
