The alumni that I see are here on DCP and FB which is why I posted what I did. When people start talking about contending next year I kinda roll my eyes. Not saying that they couldn't catch lightning in a bottle but that will be hard when you have a $300K hole to dig out of.

If the alumni where as "united" as you say I guess I question why GH survived as long as he did as director. If I had to guess it was that the alumni were happy with the competitive results more than having a sound organization run by a mentally stable person. That it took the allegations that came out to get the alumni to act on GH is something I find unbelievable. He should have been escorted out the door long ago..... IMHO of course and I'm sure people on here will disagree. The guy was a known bad person even without the allegations of rape and sexual assault and a large chunck of the alumni IMHO were the ones that fostered his ability to prosper.

I'm very happy to see things changed this year. I can't say that I'm happy it took so long for the organization and the alumni as a whole to act.

What you think should have happened and when you think it should have happened is not as simple as you put it. Alum have been walking away from the corps for years during his tenure, and it took for something like this to happen for him to leave because of how egregious and illegal it was. I don't remember him committing any crimes other than what was reported in the paper so I suspect that's probably why he wasn't ousted a long time ago. Regardless. He's gone now, alumni have been very grateful and supportive of Scott Litzenberg, and I am confident that the new director will do what he can to get alumni to rally around keeping the organization for another 80+ years.

The matter of Cadets/YEA moving their operations from Allentown to some other region interests me.  First of all, I live here (outside the city limits) and have some knowledge of how things work around here. I am not aware of any local corporate or community financial support going to the Cadets/YEA operation. Maybe something specific is listed on a financial statement I am not privy to. There are at least a half dozen large giving programs that provide press releases indicating recipients. I've just never seen Cadets/YEA listed as beneficiary.

The downtown office space is in a building that once housed a large advertising company (Musselman) that closed leaving the space empty for some time. Perhaps, the rental there is very small, or even donated. From what I've been told, Cadets are not in good standing with the concert hall across the street. As far as I can tell, neither Cadets/Cadets2 conducts practices at any Allentown School District facilities anymore.

The question I have is, what unique benefits are found in Allentown that can't be met, or exceeded elsewhere?

given the myriad of issues Allentown city hall faces, i'd run.

as for local support, who knows if it was even attempted to receive?

Same media market and same state

Maybe DE

i like MD, near DC and NOVA -   $$$ and members

Base C2 in Harrisburg, right up 81

IMO, gotta keep the corps together because there are shared resources. Being the State Capitol, Harrisburg may be ok, but the city is a huge financial mess, and any good rehearsal facilities would end up being in the suburbs.....and it's getting harder to get outside groups in for anything involving overnight stays.

Philly, or across the river in NJ may be the better option, but then you're in Surfs backyard

But most of their camps the last three years (or more) have been in Jersey anyway, so simply moving the corporate offices won't change much.

in fact, since they used Delran, Salem County College, etc., they were minutes from Philly and in the thick of Surf's shadow (though not Camden County.)

These areas subdivide beyond geography when dealing with Sports affiliations (Giants, Jets, Eagles), (Mets, Yankees, Phillies), (Islanders, Devils, Rangers, Flyers) etc.

I mean, we are not talking Hyde Park to Tampa.

There really isn't anything the alumni could have done other than withhold support from the corps, which many have done over the years. GH was never particularly popular with the alumni, even when the corps was winning on a regular basis. If the alumni as a whole had any say over it he probably would have been gone a long time ago.

It turns out when you hand pick the people who have the power to fire you that you can get away for a lot of stuff for a really long time.

I'm not certain what this means.  This year they used music composed in 2018 (Demonic Thesis by John Psathas) and 2008 (Ara Batur by Sigur Rós).  Granted, last year they spent the whole show in 1971, but the year before that half of the show was composed in 2006 and 2014 (Turning and Wine Dark Sea, both by John Mackey).

Do you mean they need to explore certain specific genres of new music, such as GOT7 or Bieber (BD '15, '16) or Beck and Imogen Heap (BK '17)?   If we look at the source music used this year by the six corps above Cadets (see below), I don't see a lot of music that is necessarily newer than what Cadets have been using, and most of the new pieces are simply Brass Band or film scores, which are not really ground-breaking exploration though they will always present great source music options.  I'd say that only a very few pieces constituted new music, and I'm not sure how effective they were.   Which pieces stood out to you as new and effective this year?  What specific avenue of new music do you think Cadets should explore?

Cavaliers: 1990, 2014 (brass), 1928, 2006 (film), 1988, 2003, 2001, 1939, 2003

Boston:  1995, 2009 (band), 1983, 1937, 2000 (film), 1779

Carolina:  1887, 2014 , 2017 (band), 2013 (band), 1964, 2012, 1995

Bluecoats:  pre-1991, 1976, 1979, 2006, 1939

Blue Devils:  1944, 1939, 1988, 1967, 2016 (film), 2009, a couple pieces that are recent but I can't find dates, 1998

Santa Clara:  2010, 2005 (brass), 2014 (brass), 2014 (film), 2017

(PS - this is the type of discussion I wish we had more often here on DCP;  let's keep music as the central focus of DCI!!!)

By “new music”, I mean seeing the group perform repertoire they have not previously performed.  Playing sections and quotes from historic Cadet programs of old was appropriate for 2018.  A smart and compassionate programming choice to unite alumni and fans.  That having been done, I want the design team to look outside past rep and compositional techniques.  It’s good to push the walls back of the box that the audience thinks you live in and explore a greater variety of musical content and effect.

Oh, that I agree with whole-heartedly.  I was not a fan of re-treading Mass last year.  And while I don't mind little signature things, like the Rocky Point allusion during the Zpull, I really want to see Cadets chart their new course, not circle back to past glories.   Doesn't mean all the music has to be of recent composition, but new to Cadets.

I was a fan of MASS....until I heard it. it grew on me, but it'll never replace 83. Whereas all of the WSS variations over the years stand out on their own.

This year, especially with everything else was all about Cadets. However...19 is the 85th. I am ok if they revisit a legend from the past ( aka not the parts of App Spring used in 14), but out a fresh perspective on it. App Spring is even ok IF it's just not 87 rehash, tho i won't refuse to  pop like a balloon if the ending is spot on from 87.
