radiosteele
Any suggestions for what you think is the prettiest ballad-ish solo ever? I want to do a poll, but my knowledge of reportoire is still limited, so I'd do only a half-### job and many deserving soloists wouldn't be recognized. As soon as this thread has panned out, I will put together a poll. My suggestions are: 1983 Garfield Cadets "Simple Song". That one-armed mellophone player put out one of the greatest ballad solos in drum corps history. My personal favorite. 1989 Blue Devils "If We Were In Love". If it weren't for that fatal blurb, the solo ALONE would have jumped the Devils up a spot. 1990 Dutch Boy "What Kind Of Fool Am I". Ok, biased I am, but this was one of the highlights of the show for me when I marched the "Frank And Sammy" show.... 1991 Freelancers "Bells". The first solo I've heard that actually made me misty. It sounded so "lonely". I know that's weird, but oh well. 1985 Madison Scouts " Rhapsody in Blue". Yeah, that dastardly clarinet part would seem impossible to transfer over to a 2-valve G soprano bugle ...but ###### if they didn't pull it off.. 2001 Glassmen "Concertina for Oboe..". That cool flugel solo from last year...very nice! 1990 Cadets of Bergen County "Somewhere". I love the end where the guard member put the soloist's shako back on after the conclusion of a wonderful solo. 1990 Cavaliers "All Things Bright And Beautiful" (I think) Great highlight to a powerful show... That's just a few.... Post away!
Geoff
1990 Dutch Boy "What Kind Of Fool Am I". Ok, biased I am, but this was one of the highlights of the show for me when I marched the "Frank And Sammy" show.... Tony Rice did an excellent job on that solo. It's a beautiful piece and a great ballad for that show, which I loved.
MikeN
That DB solo in 1990 was friggin' cool. As was the Cadet in '90. It looked like he smiled after she put the hat back on him. Or at least smirked. :) How about the two guys in '91 Cavies for The Bridegroom? 2001 Glassmen's euph will always be mentioned. I tell you what, if you want sweet G horn ballad solos, get Ornaments in Brass. I Wonder as I Wander is so beautiful. Mike
BennyASU
how about the mellophone solos from Cadets 95? That opening solo had ATTITUDE and was just freakin awesome!
BennyASU
the BEAUTIFUL baritone solo from Santa Clara's first symphony ballad in 99? The mellophone soloist from 01 New Era Dance?
Kekasse
BD 1990 (the guy with glasses...) The soprano solo before the closer is one of my favorite drum corps moment of all time. Beautiful sound... amazing !
MikeN
Was listening to 1984 on the way to work, and it occurred to me that solos were a lot longer back then. More measures. Just about every corps in the top 12 had solos longer than you'll hear *any* corps try today. G'men last year were a throwback. I wonder why that is? Zaromas
The main theme soloist in the middle of C1S in Concord '86 always struck me as the epitomy of the drum corps soprano soloist (especially he was staged on the DCI video that year) Another one of my favorites is the baritone solo in Phantom '87 Nutcracker Suite. Gorgeous bay-bee!! (he ended up winning IE on baritone in '89)

Jeff
How about Bonnie Ott playing Chase the Clouds Away for the Blue Devils? One of my favorites. Ok, OK, so I'm old....
