DCP for sale?

DCP is for sale... on ebay...

Reading the article and and ebay description... is this for real? I mean, we could literally lose this place to a group a porn fanatics or something.

I can't even explain the emotion. Is this something everyone on DCP's BOD actually agreed to?

That is not a good way to do business because you don't know who is going to end up with the site and destroy everything that was worked for. I, for one am very disappointed in reading this and what about all the money that was raised during the "fund raiser" drive...Wow...I just don't know what to think about this.

I just can NOT believe what I'm reading... Prepare for an extreme change and I am just so disappointed in reading this...

Steph, I can agree with some of your confusion after reading both the description and George's posts, and like you, I've got some questions that I'd like to have answered. Specifically:

George, did you consult any of the DCP administrative staff before making this decision? Like Steph, I'm concerned that any random person could buy our little slice of virtual reality and essentially do whatever they please with it with no input from the members. I think it would be MUCH more appropriate for you to round up the admin staff FIRST and say, "Is there anybody among you who would have the time and resources to manage DCP?", like you did with Mike New a few years ago.

Secondly, what was your thought process as you made this decision? You mentioned in one of your posts that you mulled over this for a period of "several weeks"; what ultimately led to your decision to auction off the site?

Steph brought up the question of how her contributions were spent. As a minor contributing member, I think it's only appropriate to ask the same question myself. Were you simply not able to raise enough money to keep the sight operating? Did you possibly overreach in your financial goals (I know that you mentioned wanting to establish a DCP scholarship fund as part of the drive)?

And my last question for now: what happens if you can't find a buyer in the next 6 days? Will you extend the auction? Will DCP simply go bye-bye?

I hope you understand my concerns, George, and again, I think the most appropriate thing here would be for you to consult your admin. staff to see if anybody is able to take over for you before putting the site up for bids to the whole world.

Thank you Galen, my emotions over took me and I couldn't put into words what I wanted to say as you have stated so eloquently.

Maybe if an offer had been made to contributing members first and staff we could've put money together and made an offer...

I'm also concerned with the privacy issue here.

...we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.

Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without also providing you an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.

If the site is sold, does the database that run the forums go with it? If so, then there are going to be some huge legal issues here as the personal information (i.e. e-mail addresses) of 10,000+ users will be sold without the approval of each individual. So the database would have to be terminated upon completion of sale.

:(

Yep, that is true, I'm thinking George is going to have to "sell" this site another way instead of on ebay...

Oh and to answer your question, according to the ebay auction he has everything all laid out there of what all is involved with the sale so YES.

I think this is a topic that deserves a place in the Site Discussions area, so I'm moving it down there. Having said that, I am also rather concerned about this, and would like to hear more about exactly what's going to happen if/when someone buys the site.
