How many times did we get to march in large stadiums back then? Our shows looked great from near-field-level, and today's drills are nearly unreadable from that vantage point. Corps today rarely play to the small stands and community functions that we used to do... sure, our drills look incredibly lame now (especially on video shot from a high GE box), but so does a Model T or a 1970's-era IBM mainframe computer. All pretty crude now, but VERY cutting-edge in their time.

And at low-field-level, even with the pit moved out of the way so, I still think today's drills suffer in comparison. Up high, though, fuhget about it!

actually i marched in quite a few large stadiums and huge crowds. but your right way up high the drills today kick butt.

Very good points. Unfortunately, not all the DCI shows are at venues with a good high view. I saw the show at Beverly, MA this year from about six rows up (half way to the top). The patterns were a mystery. For example, The Cadets ending statement smiley face. From field level you knew there had to be a reason for all the high energy running instead of self-assured military bearing.

as i look back 35 yrs, i can say that the 72 hurcs were clearly a powerhouse, contenders with several great corps.... especially the skyliners, an awsome corps !! we came in 2nd TEN times behind the skyliners, as well as one 3rd ,4th place once,5th at prelims, and a 4th place tie at finals. although our record in this fabled year was very frustrating at the time...i can now look back and and marvel at the war all the great corps made in 1972........great competition, great year, great memories!

somf

as some of you can remember this was a great thread and fish66 said it all about the season dca had back then. i have to say even though it opened up old wounds it was a great thread. i think we all had a lot of fun.

Most of the drills that I marched in and taught, back then, were written on the go in some parking lot or Armory. I used to stand on top of my car to see it better.

yeah it was starting line........stay out of each others way............finish line. heh

Matadors had an angel(s) looking over them those years. They somehow managed to squeak into the night show, then dropped 12 points.

Actually, after watching the new releases of the 1971 and 1972 videos, I'm really struck by the change happening in show design. In '71 there was a distinct difference between some of the corps (like SCV, Troopers, Anaheim, etc) and the more traditional (like 27, Blue Rock)....whoa... I just flashed on the old east-midwest-west regionalism thing.... what a difference universal touring has wrought! Anyway, it seems to me the shows in '72 are generally in a different mold (albeit still with a token color pre).

Ugh ... actually Westshoremen-Bonnie Scots who disbanded after 1972 DCA and re-formed early 1974.

And by my count only two corps went to both DCA and RCA (Mats and Rockets) so total of 27 different corps at the Champs.
