brassomaniac Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 (edited) After getting his personal "okie-dok" on licensing his tunes this year, CB! members get to pose with Grammy-winner Gordon Goodwin at his recent Fulton, NY concert. Seats on the rail, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HORN SECTION! Edited June 8, 2008 by brassomaniac Quote
camel lips Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Gordon is one heck of a nice fellow and he has a great memory. My sons marching band did Shake your bones about 4 years ago.A couple of years later the band director at my sons school was at a concert and said hello I am the band director at Harpeth High school and before he could say another word,,Gordon said,,You did shake your bones a couple of years back with the marching band. Needless to say the director was shocked that he remembered that. Quote

He asked to hear how "Hunting Wabbits" and "Killer Tomatoes" turn out, at DCA. I only hope they work out good enough to send him a recording. Edited June 8, 2008 by brassomaniac Quote

brassomaniac Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 (edited) Are those original compositions of his? "Hunting Wabbits" is an original; Goodwin's tribute to cartoon music. We are also doing a cover of his new arrangement (which he holds the publishing rights to) of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". He was nominated for a Grammy, for this arrangement. We're staying very close to his score. (with his permission, of course) Goodwin also has writing credits on the original "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" soundtrack, which he jokingly apologizes for. Goodwin's new treatment is a take-off on the original, campy theme. There is a link to the Original Soundtrack Theme Song on the home page of our website. It's a HOOT! Worth the time to have a listen. There is also a link to Gordon Goodwin's site, where you can play back his new arrangement....., and Hunting Wabbits too! On his site: find the XXL album, for Hunting Wabbits. And the Phat Pack album for "Killer Tomatoes" Capital Brass! site Edited June 9, 2008 by brassomaniac Quote

Gary Matczak Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 "Hunting Wabbits" is an original; Goodwin's tribute to cartoon music. Understood, but my real question is it his tribute to (quote) include a bunch of melodies created by others?,..............and if that is the case, can he really grant rights to arrange and perform it?,.............I only ask, because I do not know.................my guess is that, he would have had to obtain rights to use those creations by others himself?.............anyone?,......... Gary, You may be mixing this up with our Brass Ensemble piece: "The Brass-O-Maniacs"... which is OUR tribute to cartoon music, and includes nine classic melodies. The arrangement is loosely based (at least in form) on an arrangement called "Cartoon Symphony". That piece was arranged for young band. Ours is a bit more complex, with added numbers and with the individual tunes closer to the originals. Licenses for THAT come from the original composers and/or publishers of each tune. Hunting Wabbits does not have anyone else's "melodies" in it. It's a tribute to cartoon music in the structure , style and voicings that he used....but a totally original composition. The idea is to make you think of cartoon music... not that you'll recognize any classic tunes. You can hear it on his site, on the XXL album. He has since followed that one up with an even crazier composition: Hunting Wabbits 2, on The Phat Pack album. Even though it is doubtful that many in our audiences had heard Hunting Wabbits before... it was quite effective in reaching the audience at the three drum corps events we did this past spring. So, I think the point gets across with the arrangement we use, which is pretty close to the record... just cut down quite a bit. We've used this tune in shows, several times, along with The Brass-O-Manics. And they really compliment, each other , Classic and Original treatments, IMO. These two, combined, were originally going to comprise the Mini-Corps competition show. But, I was concerned about getting the multiple licenses for The Brass-O-Maniacs in time. So, I pulled THAT one back to use as a brass ensemble number. It worked out nicely time-wise, at 5 minutes (BHOF time limit), and can be cut to 4 minutes for the DCA time limit. In addition to using it for competiton, it also breaks into 4 expandable segments (plus a short encore number), including an open-for-solos in The Pink Panther. So we can fill about 8 minutes with it, or use little parts at a time. Even played The Flinstones in a Christmas parade last year. Crowds always seem to enjoy it, any which way!
