brassomaniac Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 (edited) Saturday was a big day for the corps... bringing to fruition the very essense of what we were going for when we created CB!: a corps ensemble that could stretch the boundaries of our market and fit into the mainstream music scene. The concert included nearly an hour of music, including: our complete Mini-Corps show our "Cartoon Symphony" a couple of small ensemble pieces a number of Big Band charts Swing, Blues, Latin and Classical-style arrangements lots of improvization and nice, tasty arrangements of both the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems We really spread the work around, with nice solos from over HALF of the corps: Andrew Bisnett, Dan Hines, Terry Gordon, Kevin Hendrick, Paul MacDonald, Tom MacDonald, Rick Rossof, Chris Rowlands, Dave Sokol and Jeff Young. Some of the material may seem somewhat "band-like", on paper; but the all-brass arrangements and, of course, the instrumentation, made it VERY impactful (ok... it was also, often, appropriately LOUD). The performance was very obviously a surprise for the audience and organizers who indicated their pleasure with the unique presentation. Please don't blame any of them for the means we've used to reach this end... but thanks must go out to the trailblazers who inspired our project: The Hitmen Brass Band, Prime Time Brass, World Gone Mad and The Music Express. Quoting from a 2007 Drum Corps World article by Gary Dickelman: "The Music Express is truly ―a very different corps. Director Murph Pugliese's perspective is that we need to do something different with the activity as we begin to ―age out of the alumni scene ......TME is new, defining a completely different genre, ratcheting up musicianship and testing the boundaries of on-stage, big brass and stage percussion. To quote Murph, ―This is the future. " (my emphasis added) We're not yet at the level of these great groups... but we'll continue exploring and building on the ideas; that there is life after field corps...., and that there are opportunities to explore outside of our traditional niche. AND, by supporting the I&E and Mini-Corps circuit; thru particpaton in contests like those promoted by the BHOF, Bridgemen, DCA and MCA. We did the American Legion State Convention Parade, the night before the concert, with: "America, the Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" ( to a HUGE reception at the reviewing stand!)... and even used G bugles! UPDATE: just found out that we took FIRST PLACE at the State Convention! Hey... don't laugh..... this one had a CASH PRIZE! Contra Joe Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 more pics: Band Fest pics What a Saturday Morning it was in Lake George at teh community band festival. I don't know if the committee actually knew what type of corps they hired but they found out rather quickly that the ability level of this corps was second to none. The morning was perfect. The sun was shining, the lake was in the background, and Capital Brass was on fire. CB did a wonderful job and I know the entire committee wants CB back next year. I wish I could have been out there with you but time committments have limited my availability. Keep up the great work and I hope to be with the corps in Rochester. Quote

capitalbrassdbc Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 (edited) Yes it was a fun day. Being on at 10AM was great as well -- it was a scorcher by Noon. The breeze off the lake made it very comfortable. Very nice place for a concert. Hope to do it again someday. Joe/Tori, nice photography as usual. Can I get a copy of the video? Andrew, thanks for finding my stand later in the day...much appreciated. Dano Edited July 23, 2008 by capitalbrassdbc Quote

Under the direction of Jimmy D'Amico, we did a similar style show at the DCA Minicorps competition in 2002. I believe the group is back together as of this year. I had a great time with this group. They rehearse in Garfield on Thursday nights. If you are in that area, you should check them out! Dano Edited July 23, 2008 by capitalbrassdbc Quote
