hostrauser
It's that time again... Last year's rankings (see link below) were just a straight average of Championship week adjusted final scores over the past ten years. However, as I updated my spreadsheet for 2008, the problem of sampling size was skewing the results past what I think is acceptable. In one particular instance, a newer corps with only a few good years under their belts (The Academy) was WAY ahead of a corps that had performed all ten years and had a Finals appearance (Blue Stars). On one hand, I don't want to overly penalize corps simply for being young; on the other hand, I also don't want to penalize corps simply for having a few years in Divisions II or III (or, similarly, I don't want to overly penalize smaller Open Class corps that can't afford/choose not to attend championships every year). In the end, I assessed a 1.0 point per year penalty to all corps who did not participate in DCI Championships. It works the best so far of the ideas I've come up with, and does give a slight boost to those corps that persevere (which I think should be a goal of the rankings). Also, after select corps are three numbers, (A/B/C). These represent (A) number of DCI Titles, (B) number of Top 5 finishes, and © number of Top 12 finishes in the past ten seasons. Without further ado... (See the 2007 edition here.) hostrauser
Wow that's a lot of work. Thanks for sharing, pretty cool stuff It took me about a week and a half to set it all up in Excel a few years ago. Now it's easy, I just plug in each new season's results and the formulae do the rest.
