Mistress Kelli Posted September 24, 2008 Author Posted September 24, 2008 A few words from Don Silva regarding the Alumni Drumline, some plans, and "staff": I thought I would take some time to let everyone know a little about our thoughts and direction for the Freelancer Alumni Drum Line. After having had the pleasure of working with drummers/percussionists in the Freelancers for the past (gulp) forty years, I know there are a lot of you out there that could/ should come give this a try. There are players from the 60s (yes 60s), 70s, 80s, 90s and players from our ten years of winter drum lines as well. My personal goal is to get a good representation of players from each decade (yes I said decade). Please don't think that you will have to come and fight for a spot through auditions or anything like that. The gathering of Freelancers Alumni Drummers is meant to be a fun, pleasant situation that gives people a chance to do something they haven't done in a while. We would like to give you all a chance to play some old school and some new school and all the stuff in between. Oh yeah, and play some Freelancer charts with the already existing Freelancers Alumni Brass Section. To help get us moving in a positive direction I've enlisted the help of Roger Carter (Velvet Knights, Concord Blue Devils, Riverside Community College, Logan High School, Crossmen, Madison Scouts and the Freelancer Indoor Drum line) and Dan Hudson (Freelancers, Folsom High School, River City Regiment, Renegades and the Freelancer Indoor Drum line). Since there have been so many Freelancers that have gone on to teach/ work with drum lines, I will look towards some of you to help out with instruction as well. We will also have Jeff Collins, Kelli Giles and Rob DuPriest helping us with managerial matters. Our short-term goals are to get as many drummers together as possible and have some fun playing as a group. We'll learn a street beat or two and some Freelancers tunes to play with the horn line. We may do a parade (if you think you can make the distance great, if not, well that's ok too). We'll be on stands almost all of the time. No hour long rolls - Exercises that are fun to do and feel good as well. Can you believe this is me talking? Seriously though, we are looking for this to be a fun and not a painful experience. Long-term goals are just being formulated. They could consist of things like competing in DCA's small corps and/or ensemble contests this year followed the next year by a really large and fine quality Alumni Corps to also go to DCA. Finally, I believe that there are a lot of Freelancers Drum Line Alumni out there that don't visit this or any other drum corps site. Please help us get the word out to all of the Freelancers (or friends of the Freelancers) that you can think of, even if you have to pick up the phone and give someone a call after all these years. That's what it's all about anyway isn't it? All these years. Feel free to e-mail me at drumsilva@sbcglobal.net for any info. On and On Don Silva Quote
Mistress Kelli Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 Just like I did for the first hornline rehearsal, I'll be baking cupcakes! Quote
kmansdrummin Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 So I take it you don't have to be a Freelancer Alumni? If so, this may be interesting. Quote

kmansdrummin Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Are drums going to be available? If there are a lot of people, maybe there can be an early "jam". Are the snares going to play on manly Mylar, or the evil Kevlar? Quote
