  2. I stand happily corrected. For someone who pushed us not to focus on scores as much as other things, Myron seemed deeply affected by them. Many an alum have been, to strange extents. Fortunately, I retain my lack of cares for the judging system to this day. ROFLOL at "scoring" art. Besides, the years in between those competitive wins were rough in various ways. It doesn't determine their worth to me one lick.
  3. SCV beat BD June 20, 2007 in Bakersfield CA. That would be the last SCV victory over BD until June 23rd, 2018 at Stanford.
  4. IIRC, Myron cried for us that day. Also IIRC, it was the last time we beat our friends from across the Bay until 2017. Very very cool that we shared that moment in time and space, V. Many sacrifices were made to bring both shows to life.
  5. I'm the biggest Vanguard fan. Was at the show in Seattle in 2004 and jumping out of my seat when you all beat BD. It was such a great show.
  6. Theres only a few days left to donate to help the corps out. https://donate.bostoncrusaders.org/ I sent a few dollars some members ways and I hope to see more alumni donate as well.
  7. Agree with above...these numbers make the absurd assumption that every corps is going to march the max of 165, even open class. My guess is they do this to help bolster membership in the smaller corps, which is actually a solid idea. I also do not know about All Age being included, but now that they are under the same umbrella I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
  8. This show is probably in my top 10 off all time favorite shows. It was really magnficant. The first time I saw it, I was not a fan because it was so modern. But, it really grew on me and complexity here was out of this world.
  9. Yesterday
  10. Irony seeing the posts about 1960s AL and VFW shows and discussion about changes in scoring priorities. Today discussion is going from musical to visual. In the 1960s it was trying to go from marching to more musical.
  11. I’m almost at the top of 139 now. A couple of rows behind @Jurassic Lancer last year. I can’t sit down there anymore. I’d like to keep what hearing I still have left. 😂
  12. My father-in-law was in the Army Infantry that were sent in to protect the Marines in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir where the temperatures got as low as 36 degrees below zero. About a year before his passing, we were able to get him talking about it by printing info & pictures from the internet. The main thing I remember him telling us is that you had to keep your socks & boots dry. The survivors were called the "Frozen Chosen". Incredible stories. I guess relating to topic, maybe PR could perform some music from wars of this century? 🤔
  13. i don't disagree visual sometimes gets too much emphasis, but it's not a universal thing. and winners have always had some captions lower than the top, and some caption winners have not been at the top. look at Cavies percussion. the issue is more a product of how the current system is set up for the numbers. the 3 performance captions for music and visual averaged together now, and GE still at 40% where it's been for a while. but without todays system, guard would still be an afterthought. but GE has been calling the show for a long time...in fact if not for music and music effect, BD wins in 2008. Bloo probably loses in 16. but performance pcations, not effect is what kept Crown in 15 and Bloo in 19 from winning.
  14. way too many small groups design like they're huge. that issue is not just a regional thing
  15. IMO, it has gotten to the point that the needle has shifted too far toward visual, and music is secondary. The day has arrived when a corps that is 4th or even 5th musically can win. I believe 4th has happened....for sure in a prelim round, and perhaps finals............for those in love with the visual products these days, and the secondary emphasis on music (ie visually driven shows....not unlike WGI) these are good times for them...........it really could be called "WGI Outdoor", and there are folks that are fine with that........in that regard, I am a dinosaur...........that show 41 years ago had plenty of visual things happening.......yet the musical product, IMO, was pretty wonderful standing still as well........
  16. True. Bad playing didn't help. Nope, nope nope. In one area near us, folks think that they need to play like their state's university with 350 members droning away when they have 25-60 kids... You know the rubrics. Droning Loud and Constant ain't gonna generate effect on any sheet I know of. Might get a 90k home football crowd jacked up... but a different situation.
  17. Not sure about Alchemist, but I'm down with Christopher Tin...😂
  18. i never once called you old or dino, i compared your views of todays activity of how it was in the past. the game has changed. drum corps judging stayed stagnant for what it looked at for decades, and then boom...everything opened up. and because the rules changed and allowed more, visual had the most room to grow to where it became of equal importance. But even as visual changed, GE has always been about a marriage of visual and music. and it's never been a clap sheet. But the emphasis had to change because visual became more important. IMO visual was not enough of a scoring emphasis for too long, and this is a drummer stating that fact. because if it had the emphasis it deserved, 41 years ago you would have destroyed everyone. it wouldn't even have been close.
  19.
