  1. I always find it funny when people try to compare DCI today to 20, 30 or 40 years ago. Personally, I'll take the music of that era over the marching of today in a second. I'm sure those of us that were part of a corp that won the M&M titles remember what it took to win them. It wasn't easy but it was one of the best times of our lives. I doubt it's any different for todays kids in the fast paced shows of today. The best part, we're not competing with you either, call it wisdom. We were proud then to be a member of a DCI corp, just as you should be proud of participating in a corp today. Let's move along!!!

  2. My understanding is the limit is 20 reps per day, 5 of which can be negative. But I could be wrong. Still, you're correct. The limit is what one can give, not what one can receive. I think Jeff's score went up more than 20 just yesterday. Jeesh. I think he's handing out cash for his votes, and he has a lot more money than I do.

  9. While on tour, my personal hype was Teal Sound. I marched somewhere, somewhere a bit "higher up" than Teal Sound. One day, we woke up at the school we were at around, say, 8 am, having got in pretty late the preceding night. It was extremely hot outside, the practice field was very far away, and no one wanted to do anything. When we get over to the practice field, we learn that Teal Sound is using a neighboring field and is in that last hour of their ensemble block, which means they've been awake and rehearsing for at least 3 or 4 hours. They then left and went to the show around the time we started rehearsing. There's a rant in there somewhere about how the performance schedule in drum corps reinforces scoring and discourages movement due to lack of time, but my point is that Teal Sound is cool. We had our truck pulled up to theirs and we played In the Presence of Enemies out of our speakers for them.

  10. the people marching drum corps now were at most 8 years old the last time Madison did Malaguena...Cadets did it in 2003, but they ain't Madison when it comes to Malaguena...

  12. This thread has shown me three things: 1. There's lots of good music for me to listen to, and 2. I need to listen to more good music, and 3. There's lots of good music to listen to in this thread Thanks to all!

  15. Not to mention that it has been done by the Madison Alumni Corps, The Cadets and probably other Corps. I could go at least another decade without hearing Malaguena. Why keep rehashing the past when there is so much great music out there that has never been touched before. I don't mind that Madison will be doing NY, NY this coming season because It was only done once in our past, but that is an exception. I'd love to see the Scouts and other Corps explore some new or original music, possbibly go down the road of more fusion or Afro/Cuban Jazz...maybe some new Broadway music. But please leave Malaguena alone for at least a little while. :)

  17. I think the issue is one of perception. BITD drill was more exposed; lines were either straight or they weren't. Ankle-knee either was or it wasn't. It was easy to spot because it was so exposed. Today's drill is so frenetic that it's much harder to tell across the whole corps whether drill is being executed well or not. Especially with small clusters of MM doing different things across the whole field. Each MM probably performs at a higher level of requirement today, but it's not as easy to spot both good and bad execution. (don't forget...) l l l l V

  20. 2 words: sub-sets Corps use sub-sets!!! SUB-SETS! It's like having a dot every 2 steps! If instructors "do a terrific job in having marchers arrive at the formation at percisely the time and manner demanded in the visual set" then multiply that by the number of sub-sets in a performance! I think your experienced eye needs some thicker glasses...

  21. That's not only a nice comment about a corps but also a very gracious way of putting it. My wish is that more people see it this way.

  22. The competitive level of all organizations runs in cycles. I remember the years when the Bucs were all but dead and competed at DCA with about 14 horns. I remember about 10 years ago when it looked like the Brigs were going to win every year for the next 35 years and they are now trying to get back on the field next year. I remember when the Erie Thunderbirds seemed to be the only corps that could win the mini-corps championship, and now Star United is on a roll. If anything, the success of the Bucs should motivate other corps to try and rise to their level and defeat them. IMHO, who wins should not be based on parity, it should be based on who is the best.

  29. Since when is proof a requirement to post on DCP? Did they change the rules? Seriously, yes, of course you're right. But if you were BD, fighting for a six-pete (or whatever) would you take the "Madison chance" and program for the crowd or would you program for the sheets? We can ask, but I'm not sure the answer will reflect the true motivation of the design team. (look down here) l l l l V

  32. Oh my... what have I missed? LOL Look, Mikey you should just let it go. This is not good for you or anyone else. I care about your health, and this cannot be good for you. My disclaimer is that I had a major part in my dismissal and I really didnt leave Roman much of a choice. I was insubordinate to him in public out of frustration, and watched everything, including my personal values get away from me. I have known Roman as a friend for many years, and I sincerely hope at some point, we can look back at last summer and either laugh or cry together. I posted (and retracted) something a couple of weeks asking posters to not slam last years or previous years' staff. There were excellent teachers in every area that worked very hard with students that maybe werent as talented as many other corps but had the desire to be in drum corps. Also it puts the new staff in a no win situation if they finish with the same or lesser results. I felt that this message wasnt coming from posters BUT from the posts out of the office. I have since received a very respectful personal message from one of the new hires telling me that the staff that had been hired didnt think that way at all, and that they had much respect for the departing staff members. I really appreciated that correspondence as well. The students that know me, know that I am passionate about this to a fault. I am actually relieved to be able to not consume myself in the corps right now. My life is becoming much more manageable with this chance to breathe. I appreciate the opportunities that Roman gave me, and can say that I did the best I could. I sincerely wish the incoming staff and students tremendous success. And Mikey...give it a break, there is no solution to your words my friend, only angst. Donny

  33. I'll quickly bring this thread to its eventual conclusion: "You dinos wouldn't know difficult marching if you saw it!" "You youngsters don't know how easy you have it! Up-hill both ways, in the snow, barefoot!" "This again?" "Can't we all just get along?" "G!" "Bb" "Marching tymps!" "Marching cymbals!" "The sheets were more demanding!" "Get rid of the sheets!" "Woodwinds!" /thread Now, you all can go eat dinner, kick the dog, beat your spouse, and curse at your kids.

  34. To the best of my knowledge there are no meetings planned with designers. Of course, the ones with the power to control shows will be there hammering out issues for 14 hours a day then, presumably, they will take the results of the meetings back to their designers to build the show. If you were a "DCI designer" the first thing you'd think about is how to win a show. If that metric allows, or requires, you to address audience impact then you'd, of course, consider the audience. The point of judging criteria is to establish that paradigm, and the corps that best conforms to that paradigm is the one that wins. With that win comes money, sponsorship, power and, in all likelihood, the assurance of your job next year. Your altruistic hope of a change in drum corps ethics is honorable, to be sure. But it would be hollow hope if your design style didn't advance the corps towards a medal and you were out of a job. This relatively minor addition to the judging sheets is nothing more than the method GH has used to move the activity in the direction that he has wanted: NUDGE. It is THAT process that has gotten us "to where we are now". And if there weren't judging requirements to dictate how shows are designed, why have them judged at all? Without competitive judging it would only be an exhibition activity, and how many seats would that sell?

  35. ...And of course, while PERHAPS true, this has absolutely nothing at all to do wth the thread topic. We can't compare, because the talent today is primarily drawn to 20 some odd World Class Corps, whereas in 1979- 1980, the nation's Drum Corps talent was distributed among a few hundred Corps. Suffice to say that in 1980 there were clearly MORE talented musicians marching in Drum Corps ( as well as lESS talented musicians ) than there are today, because these several thousand more marchers than in 2010 were distributed across a few hundred more Corps in the 1979- 1980 period. Ergo, overall both less talented AND more talented marchers marched Drum Corps in 1979 -80 than in 2010. If we took the best 135 marchers in the entire activity in 1980, they most certainly could have performed the 2010 Blue Devils show in a snap. The pool to draw those 135 marchers was 10 times larger in 1979-80 than what marched Drum Corps in 2010. But again... this all has nothing to do with the thread topic, as we were discussing which era's Corps tended to be " cleaner ".

  36. Ok, let's take the 1979 and 1980 Blue Devils, and the 2009 and 2010 Blue Devils. Corps winning back-to-back titles in eras 30 years apart. Both considered dominant corps outstanding in every area (I also chose them because I'm an alumni of the corps, so can't really be accused of corps-bias). Let's exchange visual programs. The 2009/2010 Blue Devils members could learn and perform the 1979/1980 shows in no more than a day or two at most, and could probably learn the drill in an afternoon. Give them a week, and it would be spotless. Now, use a time machine and send 1979/1980 members the 2009/2010 shows. Do you honestly believe that they'd be able to do it? Not. A. Chance.

  40. Also, I wasn't sold on BD's show right away. And I'm not generally somebody who "warms up" to shows after multiple viewings. But watching BD a few times in hi-def has changed my mind. It's brilliant.

  42. Did top 12 DCI drum and bugle corps march cleaner in 1980 , or in 2010. This is not a discussion about better or more creative, but rather cleaner. Has abandoning the tick system resulted in corps marching sloppy?

  43. Does it matter? Will a return bring back ALL the legacy viewers and bring in new viewers? Will finals be shown on ESPN or PBS again? Will DCI have national recognition (ie: NCAA Football)? Will stadiums be sold out? Will "geek" never again been mentioned in the same sentence with "band"? OR Is someone just trying to relive their youth? I'm new to DCI (saw my first show in 2005), but for an activity y'all profess to LOVE, I think y'all have crossed that fine line and now HATE. We all hate getting older, but that doesn't mean I have to HATE the activities I once loved when I was younger - no matter how much those activities have changed? OR Have I just spent a minute or two feeding a troll?

  46. Dear Mr. Gibbs, It's obvious that, in the world of DCP, you have a handful of die-hard fans who will trumpet BD's superiority regardless of what is put on the field. That's great; we all need our honks. But, despite these few cries of exaltation, a recent poll on DCP suggests that 2010 BD's production was not nearly as entertaining as some corps who finished down quite far in the top 12. While it's admirable that you've figured out the sheets with enough detail to kick the arses of the other corps, I'd like to suggest that you return your corps more to the middle of the bell-curve of performance acceptance among the fans. I suspect that in those moments when you're not staring at your rings and laughing out loud, you've heard that a proposal has been put forth to add an entertainment caption to the sheets. While not passed yet (and many of your honks have their doubts of both its efficacy and it's chances of being passed) it should signal a clear desire among the rest of the fan base to be able to enjoy a BD show again as they did in the decades prior. You know, the hard jazz, toe-tapping, "low-brow" stuff you used to play. The irony is that if the proposal is passed you won't have to change your singular obsession with programming to the sheets. But if it's not passed it still should be obvious that fans are tired of leaving the stands with crossed eyes and little comprehension of what your intent was. I might also suggest a grander result of your swing "back to the middle". America is quite fat, you know, and your decision to reprogram to include fan enjoyment would go a long way towards keeping fans in their seats instead of consuming copious amounts of hot dogs and fake cheese. Just think! You could lead an effort among DCI corps to whip the fans back into shape! The combination of hot dog abstinence, involuntary toe-tapping, and wild raucous applause could shed several tons off of DCI fandom in the course of a single season! Please continue your quest for a ring for each finger! We're all counting on your success (much to the doubt of one of your fans, in particular). But we'd sure like to, once again, enjoy the ride with you instead of reminding ourselves what "Huh?" and "What?" sound like after your shows. With adoration and deep bows, The majority of fans who vote on DCP

  47. Dear Mr. Gibbs, 74 members of DCP have decided that your show (and by extension...your corps) is both not entertaining and not entertaining (we think that was the reason for a two question poll). As you can tell we are all still struggling very hard with outcomes...they're not easy for us here on DCP, and they tend to tilt our world askew and keep us up at night. As a result we often hold cyber hands and imagine things differently. So.... we want you to get the message...."quit kicking our ### and get normal like we want (and you used to be)....do it or we'll keep having these polls....or worse, we'll say ni to you!" With desdain and affection, The People of the Poll P.S. BTW, we looked up Kenton on Wikipedia and you're right...he did play music.....(just so you don't think we're stupid)!
