  3. Have you heard of Stanley McClover? Here’s what the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel said about him in 2002 when he was being recruited by programs as auspicious as Ohio State, LSU and Auburn: Stanley McClover isn't the band kid who played bass drums for five years anymore. He's a quick, hulking 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior defensive end with sub 4.5-second speed who's considered by some prep recruiting experts as the best in the nation. In the recent episode of Real Sports on HBO (watch it here) McClover tells how he wanted to be in the band. He was a drummer and loved it before succumbing to pressure to play football. The feature describes how he and others were allegedly given thousands of dollars in cash to play college football. So far as I know, this bombshell is the first evidence we have of football boosters targeting potential drum corps talent. This must stop before all our kids are performing before and after halftime instead of where they belong! Where is the outrage? HH

  4. Seems to me that with enough fundraising activities that need bodies to do well - raffles, door-to-door in the neighborhood, pankcake breakfasts, car washes, etc - that a hard-working staff and volunteer group could use the kids' efforts to raise what the kids can't pay. And in Surf's model, it sure seems like a great way to get all the kids pulling for each other to reach a goal beyond just a trophy. I think the teamwork effort would pull the kids together for a common cause of getting talented kids in who would otherwise consider the money to be too much of a barrier. "Sweat equity" comes to mind. Would you sponsor a kid at a buck a car in a day-long car wash-a-thon? I think it's a great idea that takes the emphasis off money and puts it on pulling together for a common cause and for those less able. Isn't that a key tenet of marching drum corps? I say "Yay" for Surf for putting the emphasis on teamwork instead of a trophy.

  5. Trish: I think you are a coward. You let one person dictate what people are allowed to discuss about our art form and activity. Forums are for discussions. This is an artform. If Mike Lentz does not want to be upset by people responding to his work, he should not look here. And, unfortunately for his wonderful performers, I will not be sitting through Onyx's show...or any kind of pompous webforum that he chooses to do. The way he has handled all of this is reflective of someone I will not look up to as a leader in this activity; and I know MANY that feel the same way. Please get a grip about your position on these forums. You try to assert your place in colorguard by controlling what people discuss...and that's a pretty ridiculous contribution.

  9. is sebastienne real?some say yes! some say sebastienne st. jacque was created as a cautionary tale. a character who is a combination of the worst designers and choreographers you have ever met, with a super sized ego as big as texas.he is ruthless, pretentious, cut throat and a thief. he takes the activity extremely seriously,is humorless at every turn and has no idea that others despise him. we all know a sebastienne and have lived to tell about it! deep down inside sebastienne .......there is an even worse more dispicable person with absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. if you dare, read through all 22 pages of this ongoing saga that is......sebastienne st. jacque

  11. It seems awfully pretentious to me to refer to color guard as "art." However, if that's what you're going to do, you need to be able to accept criticism like any artist would. It seems unusual for an "artist" to forbid people to express negative opinions about his work.

  12. corpsband, we probably agree on this more than you think. No, I have never bought into judging conspiracy theories, but my DCI experience goes back to the 70's, and I think there IS a subconcious stratifying of corps by some adjudicators who may in fact have no idea they are prone to it. Just look how order of appearance can affect a show's results. I was with BAC during the beginning of the 09 tour, where Phantom had a sizable lead on Crown and a huge lead on both Blue Stars and BAC. As I mentioned earlier, they eventually got it right, but the mere fact that the first four or five panels had it so terribly wrong is evidence, imo, that SOME judges DO judge on expectations. The TOC could well play into that. I will add that I think this ia a good conversation to have....

  18. Well, OK, Surf is not letting kids march for free, but they sure are making it easy for those with limited budgets and the marching bug. http://www.jerseysur...Tour/Page1.html This is a great idea and, if you read the announcement closely, you'll find that MMs are not getting off scott-free but, rather, are offered numerous ways to march for whatever they can afford, and work on their fees by contributing to fund-raising activities. It seems to me that a corps that's making marching costs affordable to MM's is worthy of support from the fans at large. (Hint, hint) Gotta give Jacobs and crew a lot of credit for thinking outside the box and doing what they can to make marching affordable for everyone. I'm hoping that the kids who are on the edge of being able to afford marching will look closely at the opportunity that Surf is offering them.

  25. A. I did and have contacted Michael Lentz personally to discuss his process and the show...and received very rude personal comments. B. I included my name; so the post was not anonymous. C. Trish's 'job'? This is an online forum for discussion (which really holds no place of significance in the real world). Trish is not the gestapo, police, or even anyone of any kind of authority. If this is her 'job', I feel she should set higher aspirations for herself; and let people speak their opinions, which is the whole purpose of this entire site.

  28. I see it differently. This could have happened if the TOC tour was 8 shows as originally scheduled....... These 8 corps could have really opened the gap with those corps who werent on tour BECAUSE the level of competition could be so fierce between the TOC corps that they work much harder than they would have to beat each other. Those corps who finished 9 through 12 who would have benefited from competing more with the top 4 finishers from last year would not have as many opportunities. Does this make sense? But, seeing the tour has been cut back to 4 shows this TOC tour competition effect might not be as great and one or more of the 9 through 12 corps might well finish in the top 8 at Finals. And good for whoever does! I hope that if this year's tour works out, other corps get that competition chance too! ...but I really dont think that just because a corps is in the TOC they will automatically get more points in their score, but I DO think the competition at the TOC shows will force these 8 corps to BE BETTER than a normal tour schedule would.

  29. FWIW, it sounds like most corps do that at camps: ask audiences, alumni, membership, etc to not gab about a concept, record music, etc. Some probably don't care too much (and inevitably people disregard the corps' wishes and do what they want anyway), but I think most corps keep that on a tight leash. Actually, yeah it pretty much is the prevalent practice of the film and music industry. Movies, even ones filmed on location, are a closed set and pictures and video are prohibited. Often actors have to sign a non-disclosure clause in their contracts, especially when working on a big-budget tent pole type project (for example, an extra got sued by Lucasfilm for revealing minor plot points of a scene he was in for Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls). Studios release publicity stills, trailers, posters, etc. at their own leisure, typically based on marketing strategy. Obviously there are sometimes set pictures taken from a fan with a zoom lens, scripts leak, pictures leak when merchandising companies have publicity of toys or books or something before studios release their own publicity photos. But typically the film industry has the same type of information release strategy as drum corps. Same with albums: singles are very strategically released, album art and concept are released when a record company wants them to, etc. Again, albums leek on bit torrent sights, sometimes artists play new songs live before their on an album (usually as a viral marketing type strategy), etc. But the business practice of the music industry is for labels and artists to release information on their own time-line. Really, that's the strategy of business: why would any business want to release information before they feel they're ready?!

  33. Crossmen is a fair answer, I don't have the history enough to determine to what degree you are correct, but I do recall some discussion along those lines. But I think you know the point I was making. I also agree that "success (and particularly dominance)" breeds a very different tempo of analysis than "also ran", it's the nature of the beast. One point of clarification: I don't believe that BD was or is limited in any way in future design by all this (or even gives two craps). I was simply attempting to make a point that DCP seems to have a different set of standards that they apply to them. I also agree with much of your analysis in terms of audience perception, and the collective knowledge on DCP,but it must be said that prejudice has been rampant about their designs. Why not applaud the exploration (even if it sqeaks in your brain a little)? Finally...... good questions (in fact, I proffered the first one several months back). I absolutely believe with no doubt that if CC (particularly) and Cavies did BD's 2010 production at the same level of performance, they would have won by the same large margin. More importantly, they (CC particularly) would not have been scorned for it in the same way BD was. Similarly BD was raked over the coals for their scatter drill in 2008, then the next year when CC did it.....not a peep (and a Silver medal)! BTW, I know to some it sounds like whining....it isn't, it's simply an attempt to get real and accept as a discussion community that there are two standards when this corps is involved. I also believe from your comments above that we are not so far apart in our perceptions...taste is another thing. Your last question is intriguing. I think this is where I may offend some on DCP, and it's not my desire to do so. The simple answer is NO. I liked the Cavies show this year, but I think it was a hyper version of themself and in some ways might have been the last gasp of their visual colossus decade. They are such a talented corps, but the similarity year after year denys them the range they are capable of reaching. Yes, the crowd loved it, and the "this is my rifle" section was great, but it was soooooo cavafied, you could literally interchange parts with other shows and not miss a beat. In the same way, it's difficult to watch PR try to re-capture that Spartacus design again, it's almost sad. Dark, death...yada yada, I fear will be on their design menu for some time.... and their undoing.

  40. Yeah, sure man. I see what you're talking about. I fall much more into the second camp into the first one. I think winning is great, but if that's the reason you go to a certain corps, or march, then I really think your priorities are out of whack. The ring is cool, but like I said, mine sits in the ring box, and comes out once or twice a year. Just my take on it, not saying I would have traded that summer for anything in the world, but I would have been okay without the win. The memories and the experiences are the most important part to me, and always have been. Oh, and that talk about the values of winning have actually been given to us members a few times, so I guess a lot of people have the courage to say it.
    1 point
  41. No one is saying you shouldn't be proud of your son. Certainly, you don't expect the rest of DCP to have that same pride for your son? Stating that "winning isn't all it's cracked up to be" doesn't take anything away from folks who won. The members did what they did for their own reasons...a statement from an anonymous member of an internet forum can't take anything from them....although it may from someone who wasn't a part of that experience (as they took nothing from it but pride in the accomplishment). Hence my comment. The members need no defending, what they have can't be touched.

  44. 12 former drum corps members traveled 1,300 miles to Pasadena in 2007. We fine nine traveled over 2,000 miles to Indy 2010 of which 3 hadn't been to a live drum corps contest in decades, including me. I was the only person of 9 that previewed 2010 via Fan Network. I 'virtually' went to Kalamazoo, Denver, Minneapolis, Houston, Murfreesboro, Atlanta (and 2010 DCE prelims and finals). All 9 audience members enjoyed semis and finals in Indy, perhaps because we were involved with drum corps ever so long ago. I almost wish I didn't do homework before I went but it came in handy as the ladies asked me questions like "Are the guard barefoot?" "I think they're wearing flesh toned shoes." "Why are they booing?" "They're bluuuuing for Bluecoats." Please excuse me, I going to Guardapalooza winter guard show in an hour ;-)

  47. Very intriguing post. Lots of bold statements and nuance in your points... Do you think that in some way then that corps compete against themselves through their past show designs? I think that's and interesting idea. You are assuming however that the point of effective show design is how far they "push the envelope" However, I'm not so sure how to define what "pushing the envelope" even means when it comes to show design. I mean, it's really based on perspective. I think an idea that people need to get out of their head is that idea that "pushing the envelope" does not mean "un-entertaining" and "entertaining" does not just mean "company front/ 48 bar hold crap". I'm not sure what corps your referring to but while I WANT corps to "push the envelope" in show design and be original and creative, I don't want all corps to be like BD. In my mind each corps can have their own "specific" way of "pushing the envelope based on that corps "personality". And of course I want to be wowed with something and new exciting, at the same time... I am a sucker for company fronts (most of the time)... soooo yea. LOL But there is a fine line between being different and "out there". I mean Cadets 05 pushed the envelope in show design in a positive way.... Cadets 08 ALSO pushed the envelope... maybe too far. So there has to be a balance. In my opinion BD 2010 was just on the verge of pushing the envelope "too" far but managed to stay on the table for the judges. I mean, I've heard judges say that when they judge effect, they are looking for something new, fresh and different because like a lot of fans they "think" that the potential of drum corps to wow the audience has not been maxed out yet, and that it will never be maxed out. I don't know about your definition of accessible... I think a lot of show have been "accessible" without dumbing down the design (like Phantom 08) and I think a lot of, in my opinion, unique/different/unfamiliar show designs have been horribly inaccessible (cadets 08).
