  1. The main character hits on several guys during the show, but they all end up being gay. In the end she returns to her imaginary friend from last year.

  3. I watched the third matrix before the other two, and I think it made more sense to me then 's second chance'. My advice: pretend there is no story line and just listen to the music, lol.

  4. Ok here is my post WGI rant. People be on your best behavior at shows. We are crammed in to UD like sardines and you find it acceptiable to behave so poorly. I will not call out names because you know who you are section 309 row E seats 9 & 10 and row D seats 6,7 & 8. Row E if I had been sitting in front of instead of next to you I would have thrown your expensive camera over the railing. Really sitting your camera between 2 peoples heads and just clicking away the whole night very rude. I have to give props to those people in front of you because I would not have been so kind as to not say a word. And now row D we often times in this world wonder why young people act badly, talk durring shows, text, talk on phones, generly disrupt the people around then. Well here is the answer BECAUSE THEY SEE THEIR PARENTS DO THE SAME THING! Shut up, sit down, turn your phone off and don't comment about every drop another team makes you never know who is sitting next to you.You also give your team a bad reputation. I know you don't want me sitting behind you bad mouthing your child and their show. So as they used to preach to us as kids IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY, SAY NOTHING AT ALL! When you put on a team shirt it doesn't matter if your a preformer or a fan not assocated with the team you now repersent the team. Please repersent them well

  7. I will start by saying I have over the last number of years grown very open minded to everything drum corps and marching arts related. I love the old school. Without it, we would not have the activity we have today. I love the modern too. Without progression, our activity makes no progress (master of the obvious, right). Yet, I know there are those out there that prefer one over the other. We all are entitled to that. However, when we argue sometimes so rabidly about it, I now have to ask (as of today), why do we argue? Afterall, who's DCI activity is it? DCI is for the kids, right? DCA has the Alumni exibitions for the old schoolers - I'll talk more about that on a later post (after this gets a few replies). what do the kids want? Well, I can't speak for all kids perhaps but I can tell you of a conversation I had with my 11 year old daughter today. I was enjoying some old Legacy DVDs from 1976 this afternoon (still love those years, always will). My daughter sat and watched with me kind of quietly until I hear "Dad?"..."Yes sweety?" I answered, "These shows don't tell a story like last years corps did, do they" she asked. "No, your right. They don't. Just marching and playing." She stayed quiet for about 60 more seconds until I asked the next question. "So which do you like better?" I asked. "Oh definitely the story telling corps, dad. Much more interesting. I really like that corps that did the horse show that you showed me (Crown 07). I really liked that "this is my rifle corps haha. Creepy but neat". I replied with a very simple "hmmm" and back to the video and watching quietly. Until the next corps came on. Once again I hear "Dad?"...."Yes sweety"..."Dad, um when this corps is done, can we watch last year's DVD"....to which I replied...."No sweety, we can watch that RIGHT NOW if you want". And the smile on both of our faces had to be priceless. What's my point? LOL! I don't know. Feel free to read into this post however you wish. I will simply watch and read your responses for a while. :) I have some ideas that I may share later. But for now. Post away. :-)

  10. I like old. i like new. I like good that makes sense even better. yes drum corps is for the kids. But it's also for the people paying to see it. You can't have one without the other

  11. This is true, to an extent, but I think that there is plenty of ignorance, and possibly bias at play with this type of thing. With people spouting off stuff like (paraphrasing) "I don't like themed shows, I just want to hear loud brass playing and fast marching," there are obviously people who plain don't LIKE these types of shows. Not to mention, there is NOTHING wrong talking about a show's deeper meaning, or some of the more subtle stuff in a show design after-the-fact. To be honest, a bigger "crime" than what you say above, IMO, is "if the show doesn't make me think about it after the last member leaves the field, the the show is too shallow...period." Great music and marching is fine: nothing wrong with that. But I (and many other people in an audience, including judges) often want to see more from a show design than just marching & music. There is absolutely nothing wrong sprinkling in plenty of subtlety, or references into a show that some might not "get." There's NOTHING wrong with having to think about a show design

  12. While I agree that Crown's choreography is becoming part of their identity (I actually really enjoy it and appreciate it's difficulty), I wouldn't "throw up" if they removed some of it. I'm pretty sure there are some corps that don't use a lot of body movement and they're not "BOOOOOORING". A lot of corps are very exciting when they do fast drill - including crown. Let's not forget that DCI is "Marching Music's Major League". Just something to keep in mind.

  13. I noticed it, and I didn't find it surprising. It's like that saying "when a person tells a lie often enough, they start to believe it themselves," I think Onyx truly believes they are high art and were quite shocked when everyone didn't feel the same. It was a big "how dare you not recognize that what you have before you is a work of art" look. This is just my opinion, however.

  14. I have to say, from the reaction over 2009's results, and the approach to the design of the show, its pretty easy to interpret 2010 as simply a "second chance" for the judges to give them a championship. I have no idea if that's what the design staff had in mind, but it comes across as pretty arrogant. As for the show itself, I learned an important lesson in design a few years back, and that was that if a conversation like this is going on, you didn't do your job as a designer. If you're going to do a storyboard kind of show, it has to be clear. If you're going to do a conceptual show, it has to stay true to the concept. If there is a question about something's purpose on the field, then it might as well not be on the field. That's not to say that you can't do a show that is supposed to be interpreted. Phantom's show was very interpretive, but they also didn't set it up with a title that suggests a certain concept. There were definite moments in Crown's show this year that were great. The rewind was really clever, and there were a couple of little "second chance" moments throughout the show. And if that were all they were doing from a visual concept standpoint, it would have been great. But they kept briefly hinting that there was supposed to be a story line involved as well, and never developed it well enough for people to get it, and so the show comes across as a show that failed to get its point across. Its a really hard line to walk from a designer's point of view, as there will always be people who don't get it. However, when an entire community of folks can't come up with an idea of the show's intent without help from members of the corps, then the show wasn't a success from a design standpoint. This is, of course, said with all due respect to the hard work that the members and staff put into the summer. Musically, the show was brilliantly performed, and there were definitely moments I loved about it. I just felt like those design issues were what separated them from the rest of the pack at the top this year. I've certainly had similar issues with my own design, and you're not going to get it right every year, but this is just my humble opinion as an observer.

  17. Very, very cool technology, I had no idea anything like that existed. I'll wait and see how well it works in the context of the show - they're going to have to be doing some interesting rep for that kind of sound to fit in. On that note, I'm going to get some popcorn and watch this thread blow up.

  18. ok, so then you made a thread on DCP to find out what openings there are, rather than emailing the various corps? that doesn't really sound like the best strategy. Lots of openings are never publicized.

  19. Hey there. I took a crack at this during the season, and I guess I can type it up again if you'd like. To understand this program, we must first look into the ending of last year's. At the end of "The Grass is Always Greener", we see the Peter Pan character running into the tunnel, away from Neverland, and leaving Tinkerbell alone, which we can see in the change of colors from green to brown, as her sorrow grows over time. What I got out of their program was that the entire story is based on the concept of second chances at finding love. If you watch the videos, during the pre-show, you can see the main female guard lead dancing with both male leads, and when the first male lead smacks here, I believe that is supposed to represent the lover's quarrel of him finding out about her and the other lead. The Katchicurian(sp?) I believe is meant to represent the lover's quarrels, with eventually we can only assume to be the end of their relationship. The music then transitions into Marquez's Danzon No.2, where the girl tries to find another partner, as evidenced by her dancing with many different people, even the drum major at one point. The next piece is Elgar's Nimrod, where we see the female lead finding a possible new partner, and the blossoming of their new love is signified by the slow, romantic music. After this, it goes back into Mahler's Symphony No.2, and the original ending right before the rewind is our female lead mistakenly returning to her original paramour, and is almost beaten for it. After the rewind, she runs back in the other direction, and arrives at the other lead. Now, this is where the music from last year's show is brought back in, as she is rewarded for making the right decision in love, so she thinks, until Peter Pan returns to re-claim his lost love, and the pair run off together into bliss. Does that help at all? I know it's a bit academic, but it took a bunch of viewings before it started to sink in for me too.

  21. Congrats to the MBI winter guard who was a finalist in WGI Independent Open competition this past week at Dayton! This is the ensemble's first year in competition and they spent much of the year in the Independent A class until they got promoted. A great first year! Lets hope some of that good performance comes the drumline's way this weekend as they compete in Percussion Independent Open as well. It is good to see the name of all age drum and bugle corps doing quality work in other arenas. Congratulations!

  22. Yeah.... very disappointed to see such unsportsmanlike behavior. One only had to look at the ecstatic faces from James Logan HS, to see how a defending champion graciously celebrates a SILVER MEDAL. With so many amazing shows this year, any medal was an achievement to be celebrated!

  23. South Shore: Flag feature the best all weekend for me Black Watch: Simpley beautiful, great concept Fantasia: I felt like I was watching a major motion picture musical, just breathtaking Carmel: There are no words to describe how amazing I thought this show was Santa Clara: So happy it took gold, upbeat and beautiful Orlando Visual: What a way to end a fabulous year Zydeco: Love the bad guys, fun fun fun Onyx: I was sad to see they cut up my most favorite floor ever to make this years. I have to find a picture of that floor and have it made into a poster. Lyman: I really love this show was sad so many people never got to see it Apopka: Has one of the most compelling preformers to watch I loved most of what I saw this weekend. The future of winter guard will be full of diversity and that is a very good thing.

  24. I'm pretty sure I saw a bunch of very happy Onyx kids after 'Firework' started playing. They probably were told how to act in retreat by their staff. Don't blame the members.

  25. I think all extras are getting out of hand and too far away from color guard. Black Watch did it to great effect. Battery powered lights I can get with but when you are requiring electricity for your show, come on. I loved West Johnston but I was like Plasma Screens, seriously? Also, when did all this pre-show stuff start? I thought Opus 10 had started their show prematurely and then realized it was just pre-show.

  27. The North Star was a wonderful Corps, very entertaining. Some were in bands before but a lot of the marchers there were just kids off the street that just busted their arse to be able to put on a fun and entertaining show for the audience, and work their way up the ranks to get into Finals for a few years. ( but I'm biased, as I had a family member that marched and later was on the staff there. )

  31. whew.. that's a relief that this wasn't it. You were about to give me nightmares. On a happier note, did the Corps show have something to do Disney and have Mickey Mouse ( M&M ?) and Peter Pan ( " Pan " ) characters ? Star of Indiana in the 80's did a Disney show and their Executive Director's last name was " Cook ", and one does use a frying pan to " cook " sometimes. If this isn't it, then you are now on official notice that you are herewith removed from my future Christmas Card mailing list for being such a tease, Michael Boo.

  37. Luckily, I don't care what others think. I like what I like and don't try to dissuade others from liking something different. I don't particularly care what any judge thinks. So thank you, Onyx! And the other shows too :)

  38. The immediacy of the performance. The energy that they bring, the intricacy and the coordination; without a discernible (at least to me) beat, the coordination is amazing. I love how they draw Me in with a movement, and then it flutters throughout the whole ensemble. I love how they move, which is strange. I never had a love for dance. It all looked like much of the same, but this was different, and I loved it.

  39. I thought it was common knowledge about the hornline at least as common at the Garfield wipe out. I find it odd that you didn't about it. I thought you had been around drum corps for a while And yeah, they did get a free pass because they did it after the timing gun went off a lot of crowd pandering, risky GE was programmed in after the gun at the climax, end of the show Im gonna guess you werent around drum corps then

  41. many DCI corps are realizing that DCA can be a great training ground for members, and many DCA corps embrace that as well as say "start here, end here, and in between if you want, do some DCI" and that IMO is the way to go

  44. Its really interesting that these horns designed by the blue devils would advertise having a "symphonic" and/or concert sound. Wouldn't they desire a more jazzy sound? They play Stan Kenton, not Mahler symphonies.

  45. The King video doesn't mention a real innovative feature of the new horns: you can easily convert them to the key of G! Simply press the 3rd valve down. They instantly become 10 decibels louder.
