  1. So far, so good. Well, that didn't last long. Did it? Well, actually, you didn't say it until you just said it. But that's just my opinion.

  2. Well...you couldn't really use BD as the example

  3. I'll preface this by saying I didn't like Crown's show... That said, they sound good. They sound good moving, they sound good standing still, they sound good in an arc, they sound good facing back field, they sound good warming up, they sound good in leon may's crazy field coverage. Crown would sound good marching PR, Cavies, Cadets, BD, etc's show. They would straight up sound good. Period. They have talent top to bottom, a great instructional staff, and almost everyone in their hornline makes a good, dark, characteristic sound on their instruments.

  5. You know what gets me about responses such as this? That the acceptance or rejection of an OPINION (by some) depends on someone qualifying their ability to offer an OPINION based on their corps experience. Is there some expected level of experience that is required to reach for an opiono to be accepted? Really? Is there a certain quality of resume' required? Give us a break. It is a persons opinion and, in this instance, is based on observation. Yeah, their "conclusion" is based on observation but I see nothing wrong with it and it is completely within their right to present it. It is self-evident to that particular poster. The poster was only asking if anyone else had a similar observation. Nothing really judgemental about it and it really didn't come across as bashing as they feared. I agree that moving while playing a difficult passage may take away from the music but at this level of drum corps, however, a corps at this level (top 5) SHOULD be able to move and play (difficult drill and music) with equal high levels of performance. If you don't and someone else does, you should not be rewarded equally. All that being said, I don't believe you are owed an explanation of the posters conclusions. The post says it sufficiently. In my opinion.

  6. What's this? A thread about how a corps doesn't move and play as much as other corps? ...and it uses the Cadets as a counter-example? Color me shocked.

  7. No disagreement with anything listed on the thread, otherwise it would be picking nits In my ancient foggy memory, one of the most memorable moments was when Garfield came off the line with the first Contras in 1962. Back in those days the rules required everyone to start from the goal line (I know you long term vets know this). Also most corps started with a standstill fanfare before entering the field. The bottom horn end was played by a couple of bass-baritone players often playing pedal tones. Garfield's fanfare was based on the main theme from King of Kings The first time they let loose with the Contras the whole crowd gasped because the sound was so much bigger. If you listened to this performance today it would sound very much thinner than the modern sound (hard to compare two bass horns to 6, 8, 10, 14, 16, but it was very impressive for its time). BTW Cabs also debuted Contras that year. Just as today, the seniors can pump more air through their bass horns than twice the number of juniors. I don't know when the Contra got introduced to the Midwest but probably no later than 1963 if not in 1962. KD

  10. Why don't we just put all the brass lines on treadmills, crank the #### things up as high as they go, and make them play their shows. THEN we'll really know who's best!

  18. It's a legitimate topic. Some might want to consider lightening up on the OP. OP meanwhile might consider the good writing lessons rendered in this thread. Me? I don't know where the execution/demand equation balances. Wherever that should be, I had no problem with Crown taking the trophy. HH

  19. Well Obama could have called them a string quartet....doesn't take away what a great opportunity that was for The Cadets and the activity. Sure it would have been great for Obama to say a drum corps....but seriously......with what is going on in the counrty and the world right now I'm sure Obama has bigger things going through his mind........get a grip people

  20. I have never seen the brass scoring sheet, but does it mention anything about moving/marching on it........or does it just have terminology about PLAYING A BRASS INSTRUMENT.

  21. Trying to figure out how to respond to this because you say that you completely agree with them winning brass. You know that brass judges take visual demand into account when scoring right? At least that was an argument that Cadets used all season to get the brass numbers up. "We have more simultaneous demand." I think it might have helped them only lose brass by a tenth. And some people think that playing the hardest music standing still is just smart. As someone has already stated, BD has made this a staple for years. I don't particularly mind it because they (both Crown and BD) sound so good. And Cadets, well, that's just what the Cadets do and they do it well. I definitely don't think that Cadets should have won brass on simultaneous demand though. But you aren't saying that either. In addition, while it may not be the hardest music, Crown did sound great while hauling butt last year. Check out the Paint it Black brass/guard pass through right before the triple tongueing. They are hauling and the sound is flawless and quite honestly better quality than the Cadets got when they were hauling. Even though the Cadets might have hauled a bit more often, when Crown did move they still sounded better. It wasn't like Crown's quality suffered when they were marching and the quality got a lot better when they stood and posed. All this being said, I'm guessing that Crown might indeed do what you are suggesting and march more next year. My instincts tell me they will go a little more traditional drum corps and a little less theatrics.

  22. What a great opportunity for Cadets! And to thank the president for calling them an all-star marching band, they even brought along some Thunderous-Goo! (/snarky comment) Way to go Cadets!

  23. For the record I did not personally give you any negative reputation... The George Washington Bridge is located near the former Fort Washington and New Jersey’s Fort Lee, which were locations used by General George Washington in an attempt to deter the British from occupying New York City during the American Revolutionary War in 1776. "It should be an inspiration to us to recall that here, in Fort Washington, in 1776, our forebears made one of the most valiant stands against the insurmountable obstacles of the entire Revolutionary War. Here, at Jeffrey Hook, (George) Washington and his generals once struggled to block this channel against a hostile fleet with the sunken hulls of ships. Here, in a defense unmatched for heroism, 3,000 Americans sacrificed all for a great cause. We may rejoice that this great bridge was a site so sacred in patriotic memories." - Franklin D. Roosevelt. 25. I'd like to see more music that was originally written for brass ensembles. I know the Cavaliers did some in 2010 with "Harrison's Dream." I think brass band music in general would translate really well to the field. The elements are already there - loud, awesome brass music and percussion. Examples - (first piece is "Harrison's Dream," btw). There's a lot of good brass quintet and brass ensemble music in general, too. Stuff by Malcolm Arnold, Eric Ewazen, Anthony Plog, Victor Ewald, and others.

  26. Hans Zimmer's music from "The Pacific" especially the main theme is great. L.D Bell did it last season but no corps has yet to do it. It's really gut wrenching.

  27. 1. but to say Madison has a rich history means very little considering they have all new teaching personnel. WRONG 2. The Board threw-out most of the people like Scott Stewart who knew anything about their 'rich history' and the core of The Corps. WRONG 3, , People age-out, instruction staff changes and no one may be around who really understands what Madison WAS.... WRONG 4.Steve Vickers, publisher of DCW might be one person who can quote chapter and verse about Madison Scouts, he has been involved in some way with the Corps, forever.. and he doesn't march and probably has very little to say about what goes on there. WRONG (only Steve? Really?) 5. When Drum Corps were more neighborhood oriented, and members were local kids, you could keep the nucleus in place for more years, now members might belong for 2 or 3 years max. So, it is more accurate to say Madison Scouts will establish themselves.............again, ..(hopefully) yes hopefully people may know who the Scouts are again

  29. Ummmmm, Dann Petersen, current Scouts Director marched 89-91 Jr Scouts and 92-97 Scouts. He was on visual staff for a number of years with the Scouts and Southwind. Chris Komnick (executive director) marched for a few years in the 80s. James Mason in 1975. Jeff Spanos is a Scouts legend. But your right. These people know nothing of Scouts history.

  32. The idea of having Fiedler and Gaines reunited is not outlandish. Much more likely than Rennick and Shaw coming back together...and we saw what happened there.

  33. I don't think it'll happen this year. But I'm calling Gaines to SCV in 2013. Gaines not only writes cool drill but he stages the brass very very well (unlike some others). I have a feeling the brass guys over there will start clamoring for him at the end of their first year. It'll just be a matter of time.

  36. This just in.... George Hopkins has announced that he is expanding the horizons on both the electric keyboard and vocals for the TOC shows. He has just secured two TV stars for next years performances!!!! Mr. Butters the Dog and the Parrot singing "Take on Me" in the new Geico Insurance TV commercial. Edit: I received a red negative for a joke! Thanks!!! (oh, by the way, Mr. Butters is a Demon on the synth; get it? Demon...)

  37. I would rather have seen some new talent or some Glassmen alumni talent entering the pool at this stage. New blood can be horrifying ... or incredible. And new blood is what I think DCI is really missing these days. It's great that the same ppl who have had success are moving around to other organizations ...... but I'd rather hear something new from someone new.

  41. Ok Ok... So what I am seeing here is that there is a pile on, when someone utters that winning is ok, and it is fine to try to do so? Hmmmmm no wonder the world only has a few achievers... Most are eluded by the concept... Incientally it is not the end all or be all of existance to win... But it is worth it enough to put in consistant and directed effort each and every time you attempt something. If you are not reaching upwardly... you are heading in the other direction! BTW: I am extremely proud of my BD family for their efforts this season... I loved their show and their tenacity! They ended up feeling like winners this season. (all except for the Jewlery) Mamby Pamby cannot be masked... It lives here on DCP!!! Lose away folks... Do not let me stand in your way!

  43. haha... oh my god. The plain ole idiocy of people who think a little scrap of fabric is gonna "hide dirt". These arguments get funnier everytime. Lets just face it though.... no matter what the Blue Devils do, there is a negative reason behind it. If they change plume colors, it will be "to hide dirt" because Blue Devils are always SOOOOOO dirty, they just disguise it well. Shoe color... Hides the dirt. One year they even went black and grey. You know why? It hid all of that AWFUL dirt! I heard their food truck is serving applesauce next summer. You know why? because it hides dirt. I dont know how intelligent grown up human beings can be this narrow and shortsighted just because of their corps allegiances. I wasnt a huge Crown fan this summer, but I am not making ridiculous posts about how Flame graphics on drums are just there to distract your attention from all of that dirt.

  44. You're a beautiful thing Boo! Actually it's not a tail, unless Irving has been hanging around some animals that are drinking from the nearby Nuclear Power Plant. It may be called different things, but it is more of a scabbered for a sword than a sash. It's quite elegant and dashing on a military uniform. It's been different colors each of the last years and flashes of these colors appear as they jazz run....really cool. The bigger question is when are Cadets gonna lose the gold cumberbun!!
