  1. Good thing for the Blue Devils that they stagnated in the top 3.

  2. From their website. Although the details are still being finalized, the design team has settled on preliminary source music from (but not limited to) the following selections: Ottorino Respighi - Pines of Rome Ottorino Respighi - War Dance from Belkis Queen of Sheba Zbigniew Preisner - Lacrimosa from Requiem for my friend Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 1 (Titan) These pieces will form the basis of a production with the working title of "The Titans" (This announcement was made to members of the 2011 Crusader Club prior to the public announcement - just one of the perks of joining the Crusader Club! Details on how to join the 2012 Crusader Club will be available in the next few months.) "This show allows Boston to continue to be Boston," commented Program Coordinator Brian Murphy. "We will bring an emotional, strong and aggressive production to the field in an accessible package." The Crusaders begin rehearsals November 19 with the auditions in MA, followed by TX and then a full weekend in Florida November 25-27. Fill out an application here.

  6. I'm sure most of you guys have heard of the Chase Community Giving program. If you haven't, basically it's where a bunch of charities/non-profits are in the running for large donations from Chase Bank. You can vote over Facebook, and the groups with the most votes receive donations. If you haven't already heard on Facebook, The Academy and Crossmen are in the running this time, so make sure you vote for them! You can vote on Facebook, or I'm sure there's a way to do it online elsewhere. Every vote counts!

  7. The Reading Buccaneers will once again be out in force at this weekend's Cavalcade of Bands Championships in Hershey, PA and Millersville, PA. As we've been for quite a while now, Buccaneers will be very visible all weekend as ticket sellers, gate personnel, band liaisons and equipment assistants. In addition, we will have a membership table underneath the home stands and will welcome the opportunity to speak with members, prospective members and parents about our corps and our plans for the year. So much excitement in Pretzeltown this off-season - we've announced a world-class team of designers and caption heads and introduced you to the world-class teams directing the brass, percussion and color guard captions, and the visual staff announcement will be out shortly; we've announced an awesome and inspiring class of inductees into the Buccaneers Hall of Fame; we've released a brand new web site; and we're working on a very exciting announcement for what we know will be a very exciting 2012 program - which we'll release on Membership Day, November 27. We're chomping at the bit to get started and welcome anyone looking for the experience of a lifetime. So, if you're at Cavalcade this weekend, stop by, say hi, and inquire about the 2012 Reading Buccaneers! To all performing this weekend, best wishes for your best performance of the year!

  16. While this is back up I'll comment Phantom 89, 93, 94, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011 are years that stand out. Especially 2006, really a COMPLETE package. Cavies- Michael Gaines.. yup, 2006 is his best work IMO Cadets- Such a history of awesome drill. This past year may have been the most creative, and hardest to write. Always effective. Love the run and gun at the end of shows. And as said above, I reallllly enjoy 93, gutsy, fun, CHALLENGING. 98 is so clean. Ending of 2008 saved the show from being a complete embarrassment... Star- 90-93 SCV- SO MANY YEARS. 99-2004 are all good books. 2004 is one of my favorites. 2003 ending with the cymbal line coming through the middle... such a cool effect. SCV has a great history of drill. BD- I appreciate the nearly perfect staging. But I find the drill ineffective. I did lke some of their early 2000's drill. 2003 stands out. Early 90's showed a lot of challenging effective drill. Maybe not as refined as today's drill... but demand was just as up there. And effect would blow the roof off the oil can nowadays. Just the top 3 in 93 alone. There are so many other good drills over history, this is just some that come to mind.

  17. I think a common thread among the posts about the Crossmen percussion BITD is Mark Thurston's writing. He wrote some great stuff, and found a way to incorporate some amazing grooves, without making it obvious, or seem cadence-like.

  18. The Sunrisers are extremely excited to welcome J. Frank Nash to our staff for 2012 in the capacity of Percussion Caption Head and Battery Arranger. Mr. Nash brings with him a wealth of drum corps experience, having begun his career at the age of six in a small corps from Brooklyn, NY that was an offshoot of the Loyal Order of Odd Fellows fraternal organization. Mr. Nash then continued his junior corps career with the Wynn Center Toppers, the St. Joseph Patron Cadets and the nationally ranked St. Rita's Brassmen of Brooklyn, NY. From 1973 until the present, Mr. Nash has enjoyed associations with the New York Skyliners, Harrison Bushwackers, Hawthorne Caballeros, Syracuse Brigadiers, Atlanta Corpsvets and Fusion Core in the Drum Corps Associates' (DCA) arena. During that time he has been fortunate enough to be part of a record nine DCA World Championships and one American Legion National Title. In addition, Mr. Nash was also an integral part of seven DCA Percussion Titles. Mr. Nash is also a 3-time DCA individual Snare Drumming Champion. Mr. Nash has previously served as Percussion Caption Head and Arranger for various drum corps and high school bands in the tri-sate area, most notably the Caballeros, Skyliners, Corpsvets and the Lehigh Valley Knights in DCI Division III. In September of 2007, Mr. Nash was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame and is a member of the Vic Firth educational team…

  19. I thought Crowns guard was Amazing last year. They were one of the most fun guards to watch. I thought they kicked Azz last year!

  20. The Academy and Crossmen should ask The Cadets about their Chase game plan. I wish both corps luck, I will vote for both. But, to be honest, I still get that nauseous feeling in my stomach every time I see Chase Community Giving

  21. If you look at the scoring, playing well counts. In fact, on the PA sheet, performer is 25 of the 40 points, not book. yes the visual stuff can be a little out there from SOME groups...but not all. As a staff member from a Scholastic A Class finalist, I will openly admit those that beat us played better. I saw all of World at prelims, and the best playing teams won. now if you want old school rams with tons of notes that don't make musical sense, then WGI may not be the place for you, which is my hunch on where this topic is aimed. But it's far more than "he who plays the most notes wins". I think the current admin team is doing an AWESOME job with how they are running WGI percussion. We were only able to attend one regional, yet we had many second reads at Dayton over the 2 days we performed. I know some first reads turned out better for us than the second reads did. Mark made a comment to me last year that after seeing many groups shows me playing the best wins: "The groups that focus on the visual sheet and overall effect will never win. They focus too much on 40% of the total number, and not enough on the 60% that playing well counts for." He was 100% right

  22. Geez! Once and for all, I never said he didn't march ever. I didn't say that his family weren't true-blue Devils. I said that saying that a 3-year-old marched is disingenuous at best and that I'm sure he was adorable when he was dressed in his little tiny costume. I stand by that. And it's not that I have a problem (as someone stated above) it just seems that when someone has such an amazing marching career.... embellishing it does nothing but diminish his true accomplishments.

  23. Staff consistency is the single most important ingredient in competitive success. Exhibit A: Concord Blue Devils. Exhibit B: The Cadets. Also, staff sort of works likes membership. Top corps attract top staff talent. I love how a few corps are always reinventing the wheel when it comes to staff. Whoever the exiting staff is couldn't teach their way out of a wet paper bag. The new staff is the second coming of Jesus and will solve all problems. Three years later, they're back where they started. It makes me laugh. Edited for bad grammar.

  25. BAC just announced their 2012 named 'Titan' Below are some of the selections Pines of Rome (Respighi) War Dance from Belkis Queen of Sheba (Respighi) Lacrimosa from Requiem for a Freind (Preisner) Symphone #1 (Titan) (Mahler) Sounds like a good match for BAC. I think Cavaliers played 'Belkis' in 1994. Great peice. I assume they will put their own spin on 'Pines' just like they did last year with 'Le Miz' and '1812. It's great to see more of a stronger identity developing from BAC the past several years. With a new arranger for 2012 it should be interesting.

  26. I am so excited for this new season at crown. I wish I was young enough to march. Because I would drop everything to tryout for crowns guard this summer. It's certain to be a great experience for anyone who marches under this staff! They are so amazing! Go crown!

  30. Not every shoe will be best for every individual. One thing that IS essential is being fitted for a shoe professionally at a store. I was fitted before my first season and as it turns out, I'd be wearing the wrong shoe for many years. Now I know my exact size (I have wide feet) and though it's a pain in the butt, I'm able to find a shoe that fits and supports me through athletic activity. I prefer New Balance. Their wide sizes are a good fit for me. Nike always fit terribly because their standard sizes tend to run narrow. As for performance shoes, I LOVED my Vipers. They had flexibility and were durable. The only thing I think they lacked by design was arch support so while grass/turf felt fine, vis. warm up in the lot hurt much more.

  31. I agree. At times it seemed like it was the "Herbert" show with guard and horn accompaniment. He was a good performer, as I'm sure many others in the guard were as well.

  32. Am I the only person that didn't care about Herbert this year? Anyway, I wish them luck! They always have such an interesting and great guard lately.

  33. When Rosie was in charge of the Crown guard before, they were consistently in the hunt for the guard title....this is a good move for Crown to get her back running the program. Michael Townsend is one of the best choreographers in the business. Rosie and Michael work together at Carmel high school (2011 WGI World Class champions). They are a great team and should push Crown guard back into the upper rankings of the guard caption next summer.

  39. If you're talking about historically best drill, I would go with Cadets and Cavaliers. They have innovated to an extent that has influenced the activity probably more than any other corps in the history of DCI.

  45. At least the Blue Knights aren't doing all of that willy-nilly silly skipping, hopping, twitching, and corps proper degrading body movement they were doing back in '06. The Glassmen used to do that meaningless crap from the early '90s-'97 before they wised up and realized that only goes so far before it becomes laughable. I'm all for body movement for effect and such; just be smart about it.
