  2. Guys. Local drum corps as they existed back when there weren't good laws protecting children CAN'T exist today as they did then. Get over it. Marching bands are more legitimate and more numerous. Celebrate DCI; it's better than it was before. By far.

  3. Was just thinking this. A vote for a drum corps in this competition is not a vote that will help people have a better life, but rather a vote that will help an organization to further its fundraising goals. Kids who are marching drum corps have already won the economic lottery, for the most part. Let's face it: if a corps wins money, it isn't going to actually use that money to create a lasting endowment -- it will use the money to not have to raise as much money this year. This is crazy! The members won't see a reduction in fees. The buses won't break down less. YEA! won like $200k this summer, and fees are *still* about $4000/kid. I'd rather see money go to groups who are helping preserve the environment, feed people who are actually challenged, or help contribute to science in some way. Drum corps is great, but this is, in my opinion, not a "contest" where the corps should be competing. Very strange.

  7. I want to get to the point where "imagining" is reality and this challenge is successfully completed. Please go and vote for as many of these corps as you have votes for...or for other charities too. Each person gets 10 votes. Selfishly, I'd love it if The Academy was one of your 10 votes. But, you vote your heart. It's just important that YOU VOTE. Voting ends on 11/22/2011 @ 11:59:59 PM - EST VOTE NOW!!!! You can vote in less than a minute. It costs you NOTHING. Imagine taking over $3M of Chase's money and giving it to 100 not-for-profit organizations INCLUDING SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DRUM CORPS!!!! www.facebook.com/ChaseCommunityGiving or even easier...www.VoteAcademy.com Thanks everyone!

  9. Marching drum corps changed my life. I know it doesn't have as direct an effect as other charities, but it changes people. It inspires people, shows people like me that amazing things really are possible, that we are capable of incredible things. It arms us with tools that make us successful. Maybe it doesnt directly help lower costs or anything but it ensures that the experience and activity is still there, and still able to impact a lot of kids.

  14. Oh - you haven't looked at the list of organizations in the running, have you? I didn't see many, if any, organizations that are seeking to obtain funding from the Chase Giving program that provide these services. I chose to vote for D&B corps over the organizations that have placed themselves in the running for this funding. Do I feel that is in poor taste or materialistic - not at all. I would put promoting the values that D&B Corps can instill in the marching members over Save The Frogs, Raptor Resources, and yes, the Bat World Sanctuary - but that is just my opinion / preference. Given the choice to help direct where some financial support goes I'll choose D&B Corps which is a nationwide activity that teaches, among other things, personal improvement, discipline and commitment. These skills often help the members become the type of person who then gives to others in the areas you note. One could point out that votes to the previously mentioned organizations in the running are less helpful to society - but individuals involved in those programs consider it to be an important part of their lives - just like the D&B Corp community wants to help take care of this community. I choose to support charities that provide the services you note in other, directly financial ways. Of the listed charities - I'll give my vote towards the D&B corps and sleep very peacefufl tonight over this choice. Sounds like your objection is more against Chase for providing this opportunity to organizations that choose to participate in this funding activity - than those of us who are using the activity to vote for funding in the charities participating. And - if someone could just tell me how they are doing 10 votes daily I would certainly vote for the D&B corps - but the program keeps noting that I have used my 10, total, votes.

  17. The "bloopers" I was referring to were NOT performance-related; rather, those involved with the recording process. Any one of us that has been on the field KNOWS when they make a mistake and highlighting and re-living those moments benefits no one.

  18. Whoa, easy there, guys. the thread is what is/are your favorite closer(s), not my favorite is better than your favorite My $.02: SCV's '84 "Promise of Living" and '87 "Great Gate of Kiev." Also enjoyed '84 Garfield's "West Side Story/Quintet" and (though admittedly biased) Dutch Boy '88 "My Way." Peace, Fred O.

  21. you cant compare those activities to drum corps at all. Its easy to blame someone for the fall of so many corps but plain and simple, economics, local support for the activity , bad management,as well as cost to run a drum corps are nothing like they were and never will be again. Drum Corps compared to those you mentioned is a very small niche and can never have support like it did back in the day. As I said, try to just get a facility for a rehearsal and you will see. Also as I said kids are very different now also. We had not alot of choices back in the day compared to the kids now...theres the good and bad of it.

  23. :worthy: :worthy: I'm glad someone thinks the same thing. :) when I'm old and hopefully DCI is still around, instead of being an old, grumpy, dinosaur that complains that no corps jazz run anymore or that back in my day amps and synths were the greatest, I'm going to support the activity, no matter what it becomes.

  25. Lets help clear your mind about the 2011 season. Platinum did not have the 30 members that where required for tour they had 24 members. They are very much alive and planning for the 2012 and management has it under control for returning to the competitive field of action.

  27. AL/VFW have separate, different missions. Drum corps would not be a priority for them today. If it wasn't DCI, it would be something else...which would essentially be the same thing; a governing body for drum corps.

  28. IIRC, *somewhere* on this forum in the past few days, I recall Tom Blair saying that judges or other factors will sometimes mess up shots and I'm sure that quite a bit of footage ends up on the cutting room floor when they are putting these together after season's end. Here's a great marketing idea for DCI...put together a "bloopers" DVD of some of the gaffe's that have never made it onto the "finished product" over the years. I bet it would be a hoot!

  29. OK, I think you misread what I wrote. I said Rep = the design side of both the Vis and Music GE sheets. Using simple math: * there were three corps who had a 10th place score on a Rep sub-caption (out of the 4 Music & Vis GE judges): Madison Scouts, Blue Knights, Bluecoats * adding up & dividing each of those corps' Rep sub-captions by 4 (again, 4 judges) gives the following average score/rank of the Rep Sub-caption in GE: 8th place - Bluecoats with GE Rep average of 9.025 9th place - Blue Knights with GE Rep average of 8.975 10th place - Madison Scouts with GE Rep average of 8.75 (FWIW Boston came in 7th in GE Rep) To be honest, I eyeballed my statement originally, without doing the math (when I said so your reply kinda made me take a few minutes and actually do the math to confirm As for brass, sight whichever performance you want where Scouts beat whomever (in the case above SCV). They did come in 11th at Quarters (though still beat Scouts in the Musicality sub-caption). SCV must've had a rough run that night and bounced back pretty well the rest of the week. Scouts, on the other hand, did similar with their lowest placement also Thursday, before jumping up the next two nights: maybe they had a bad run too? Or maybe the Quarter's judge didn't like either corps that much, I don't know. Facts are that Scouts brass was still pretty far away from Top 6 (and for that matter SCV was too, but we're only talking about Scouts: feel free to start your own thread about whether or not SCV will kick their brass back up to Top 6 with their new staff ) Again, I dug Scouts show, and think they're in a great place to continue to improve and move up the ranks with the right show design and the continued development of all sections of the corps. I don't think anyone will argue with your assessment of Scout's 2011 percussion section, and either way I think there is a TON for all drum corps fans to be excited about with The Scouts in 2012!!

  30. This was in the top spot on my playlist this past fall. I drive all over the place in the fall working with local (and some not so local) drumlines and bands. A show that can tastefully get in your face.

  32. •A holy war breaks out when The Cadets bring both angel food and devil's food cake to the dinner. •Blue Devils forgot to add a kitchen in the house plans. •Cavaliers' drum major attempted to jump over the table at the end of dessert and stepped squarely in the pumpkin pie. •Herbert is unable to break open the can of Pillsbury biscuits. •Regiment's horn line keeps pushing apart the potatoes from the gravy. •The saying of grace takes a bad turn when Brandt Crocker states, "Imagine you're in gastric distress, and you want to fart." •Bluecoats are in charge of setting the table and put each guest's fork, spoon, knife and salad fork in a different corner. •Jay-Z doesn't allow anyone to take video of the table decorations. •All the desserts Blue Stars' brought start out looking bad, but look better as the L-tryptophan from the turkey kicks in. •The guests from Spirit of Atlanta draw a chalk outline around the corpse of the turkey. •The vampire queen from Glassmen keeps trying to bite the turkey on everyone else's plate. •Members from Troopers' horn line insist on singing a musical grace and draw out the "Amen" so long, everyone's food gets cold. •The Academy keeps REpeating their request for more yams. •Colts bring carving knives that won't slice the ham due to having jagged edges. •Crossmen keep talking about the legendary Thanksgiving dinners of the past. •Pacific Crest keeps pushing other guests away from the table, pulls the turkey's drumsticks apart, twists the cap on the mayonnaise so tight that no one else can open it and then turns over the table. •The host of the dinner can't figure out what section with which they should seat Teal Sound's violinist, rock guitarist and electronic woodwind player. •Everyone complains about having their wallets pickpocketed after Mandarins send over forty thieves. •Tensions rise when the host refuses to open the mysterious orange box that Cascades claim is full of really neat cookies. •Panic sets in when the jungle flowers Jersey Surf brought for table decorations turn on the guests and start devouring them. •Pioneer brings a cured ham that is dyed green. •Blue Devils B, Oregon Crusaders and Vanguard Cadets qualify to be seated at the main table, but aren't allowed in the group photo afterwards.

  33. Georgia Dome can't not be beat IMO. The sound echos and blasts through the entire stadium as soon as you enter the doors. Its Amazing. Not to mention if you are marching Spirit of Atlanta, expect probably the loudest cheer for any corps at any event as you come onto the field.... hahaha xD

  36. I got my Blu-Rays today!! I live in North Carolina and only ordered a few weeks ago. Did not pay for expedited shipping. Very pleased with the product. Spent the afternoon watching all 12 shows. To all the people worried about the edits for Crown and the Cavaliers, they seemed pretty seamless to me. I was watching in multi-cam so I don't know if there would be any sudden angle changes or an alternate shot thrown in on the hi-cam. But if someone was watching/listening to it who was not familiar with the show they would never be able to tell that anything had been changed. For Madison they waited until the last possible second to fade out to a black screen then brought the picture back before the last held note. They did excellent work in a difficult situation. I applaud Tom Blair and his crew on a job well done!!

  37. So for all the people who complain about The Academy and that they need to do a full tour here's your shot to do something about it. There's roughly 20k members on this site. I know not all of them visit, but I'm sure a vast majority do. So rather than complaining about The Academy and that they aren't being fair to all the other corps why don't you go and vote for them to help them on their full tour this year. You don't even have to spend a single penny!! You have 10 votes, so vote for The Academy and then all of the other drum corps that are listed as well.
