  1. Watched this today and decided that this year what I am thankful for is all those kids that choose to give so much of their time to provide us with such great shows to watch.

  2. I do. Last time I checked, this is a competitive activity. Success breeds success. Success on the field is a direct corellation of success away from the field. What do the groups who are consistent finalist ALL have in common? Strong leadership and solid and dynamic management. A solidly managed corps attracts the cream of the crop staff wise. More and more often, kids today see drum corps as resume material. They want to play in a line taught by Meehan, Gaines, ScoJo etc etc... With a great staff, you have a much greater recruiting pool to choose from. Are the same "kids" trying out for Pioneer also having a crack at Crown or Cadets? I think not. I hear story after story of kid A trying out for Blue Devils... not making the line... and then not marching at say Pacific Crest because their staff isn't of an All Star caliber. Don't get me wrong, I hate that but it's simply fact. It happens every single year. Heck, lets be totally honest here... Madison was going nowhere until Mason came into the fold. Crossmen have now faded into relative obscurity now that hardly anyone can name more than one or two of their staff members. Under the YEA! fold, they were most definitely on the up. So yes, IMHO, success on the field is a definition of a successful organisation.

  3. I think Grumpy addressed this just now, but it's the way DCI handled the situation. They could have e-mailed us and let us know beforehand that there would be additional edits. SOMETHING. Instead, we get nary a peep from DCI. Very slimy business tactics if you ask me. Me? I am very upset about the edits. Here's why: Phantom's ending is from semi-finals, which is a much less epic ending and in fact, pretty lame imo. I never liked this ending until finals, and then they edit it out. Are you telling me there wasn't ONE camera that had a frontal shot on Juliet? And if so, so be it. We know she doesn't really "kill" herself, so why edit that back shot out? Those of us who have FN have already gotten used to this shot anyway. I'm even more upset about Crown's edits (or lack thereof.) Why cut the pre-show? That sets the mood for the whole show. I wasn't nearly as upset about this edit, however, as I was about the LACK of an edit. They edited Phantom's ending because (I guess) the effect was ruined due to a poor camera angle, but they don't bother to edit the guitar smash from semi-finals into Crown's ending? WHY? So, we get to see a failed guitar smash, which to me is much more disappointing than seeing the back shot of Juliet "killing" herself. Man, I'm ###### about this. I thought, "Surely they will edit in the good smash from semis since they so heavily edited everyone else's performance." but no. We get the failed attempt. There was absolutely no need to leave this as is. They could have cut to the shot from semis seamlessly, as they did with the Cavies' edit, and the cut back and it would have been epic. Instead, we get a big fail bomb. That guard dude deserves better. We all do. Cavies' edit was jarring, but it didn't bother me that much. It was only jarring because I know the shows so well. It still sucks that they are doing this. I am seriously considering not purchasing finals blurays again because of all of this and mostly because of the way it was handled. Shame on you, DCI.

  4. Music City's 2012 show "Phantoms of the Grand Ole Opera" is in the works and will include the songs listed below. The show will mesh music from "Phantom of the Opera" with decades-old country classics made famous by the legends of the Grand Ole Opry. The Phantom of the Opera theme Ring of Fire Walkin' After Midnight Sweet Dreams All I Ask of You Your Cheatin' Heart Point of No Return Stand By Your Man Music of the Night Music City's audition camp will be held December 2-4. Prospective members can get more info and submit an application on the corps' website at www.MusicCityDrumCorps.org.

  5. Up until a few years ago, the DCI telecast came on during this weekend in most areas. With the movie theatre showings, fan network, TSWSNBN, etc, it may not be as big of a deal anymore with many more outlets to watch DCI on besides live and VHS/DVD/Bluray. However, you can't beat nostalgia, and I bet I wasn't the only one who taped those telecasts and replayed them over and over again! The question is, with all the other media outlets nowadays, do you miss the telecast? Or does the fact that it's not around now not really matter as much anymore?

  7. Wanna know what's even better? On Thanksgiving day right now, 2011: 1) I was able to watch DCI Finals on my living room couch about 12 hours after the scores were announced thanks to Fan Network 2) I've been able to watch any number of the bigger (and some small) DCI shows throughout the season this summer starting in June and currently thanks to Fan Network 3) I can watch the high definition audio/video of the Blu-rays of Finals that arrived a few days ago Yeah, I don't miss the PBS broadcast at all this weekend, and I'm pretty satisfied (I dare say thankful...) with what we as drum corps fans have currently compared to what we had almost a decade ago

  10. Yes, it is true! --Beginning in the 2012 DCA Season, the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps will be going to Bb horns!! As a result, we are selling our beloved G Bugles since we simply don't have enough storage room to keep all the horns. Some of these horns have helped Carolina Gold to the DCA Finals FIVE times! They are well cared for, newly cleaned, and ready for you!! Almost all of the horns are Dynasty (except for 2 Kanstul Sops). All come with cases -except for the Contras. The horns are available for viewing and playing at our Greensboro, NC facility! -Or you can take a look at photos here : http://www.carolinagold.org/storeroom/store_room.html Prices are on the above site and are for single-purchase horns. Prices may be negotiated for multiple purchases. You may contact Paul Mellander at 336-580-4809 with any questions. Thank you!

  12. Ahh.. how refreshing... constructive and well thought out debate... I LOVE IT!!! I don't think I said that score and placement is the SOLE definition of success, but it is a huge part of it... If that's how I was interpreted, then I didn't get my point across as intended. Success is relative to the individual corps. Each and every group needs to set their own bar height. If you are the Blue Devils, anything outside of top 4 is probably NOT considered a successful season. Heck, in 1987, they placed 4th after winning in 86... they had a HUGE staff and membership turnover the next year. In 1990, my corps, the Freelancers, missed out on Finals. I to this day consider that an unsuccessful season. I still would not trade that summer away for the world, but competitively, we didn't get the job done. Now on the other end of the spectrum, say Pioneer... Placement probably doesn't matter too much for this group so long as all the members and staff come away from the season with a positive experience, and the corps remains economically viable, then by their standards... THAT would probably constitute a successful season. But to be fair, I and a lot of people consider Pioneer to be the exception, rather than the norm in World Class. I love Pioneer and absolutely NO disrespect is intended here, but I think the whole ethos of the organisation is much better suited to Open Class, but that's just my opinion. In World Class, I wouldn't necessarily say that winning a championship is the sole indicator of success, but I would say that being COMPETITIVE is...

  13. Well, our goal as an organization like many others this coming season IS to make it out to finals. On a personal note, I look forward to having the kids share their personal and learning experiences with me. These along with the education each member will receive from marching a season of Drum Corps at ANY level, is something they will take with them for rest of their lives. And at the end of the day isn't THAT whats important? -Charlie Dolar- -Percussion Caption Head- -Platinum Drum & Bugle Corps-

  14. Why would the current Executive Director's of individual corps give up voting control of DCI? The decisions made by the BOD of DCI has direct impact on the individual corps operations. The Executive Director's first responsibillty is to his BOD, staff, members, volunteers and his whole organization and not DCI. If you are a current Executive Director you want your board to be as diversified (alumni, parents, business people and donors) as possible inorder to minimize the risk of getting fired for making one bad decision and have the ability to implement a long term strategy for growth and fulfill your mission. That means nationwide recruitment for members to serve on corps BOD's. In today's economy it is difficult to find board members that have the correct skill set needed and the time and the money to serve on a non profit board. I have served on a corps BOD for six years. To make a Saturday board meeting I have take a days vacation, drive to the airport and park in the short term lot. Pay an outrageous airfare to the city where the board meeting is taking place. I normally stay with relatives or friends but I do have car rental fees, gas and food expenses. Sure I can deduct the $ 4,000 a year I spend attending board meetings but it still seems a lot when I get my credit card statement. Several other board members have similar expenses to attend the same meeting. I love the activity and I will continue to serve on my board because I know that without board members corps can't operate effectively. For those that think that the current DCI model is broken you are wrong. It has served the corps well for forty years. Enjoy the 2012 performances.

  16. Actually... would be reduced to zero. There is one concept you might not be grasping... drum corps is decades behind most other arts and entertainment activities and evolves at a snails pace in comparison. It is not the administrators and designers that are pushing this forward, it is the kids... KIDS WANT NEW.... KIDS WANT THEIRS... SOMETHING UNIQUELY THEIR OWN. Kids don't want to do exactly the same thing the generation before them did or to did in the same way. They are drawn to what is NOW. If anything, it is the old guys that are running corps and designing that are actually holding back progress and hanging on to traditions... if the energy, creativity and fresh view of youth could be properly channeled, focused and practically applied... the activity would be doing something radically different. As it is... drum corps only appeals to a microscopic slice of the youth population... it simply doesn't connect with the majority of youth out there. This is too bad, because I believe the experience is unbelievable valuable... infinitely more valuable than any traditions associated with it. So, in that context... if what really matters is providing the valuable life experience to as many youth as possible... shouldn't the activity more rapidly evolve in a way to resonate with and appeal to as many kids out there as possible? Let's just put this into a bit of perspective here... ... that most wouldn't even recognize as even being associated with the Blue Devils at all.... has almost 10,000,000 unique views... ALL over the world... MOSTLY BY YOUTH.This single video has reached more people than the Blue Devils organization has in the entire existence of the organization. As a result, this video has likely inspired more kids around the world to pick up a pair of sticks or learn to play an instrument than all of the rest of the activity of the Blue Devils organization throughout the years combined. Now... as much as I love that organization and as much as I dug the stuff we did back when I was a kid... this shows the real potential of a modified form of the art that has so much more potential to reach youth than in the current form. On the topic... while I dug the first bit of the quirky series of recruiting videos The Cadets made... what if they had used that time, energy, attention, creativity and production value and instead produced short videos like this that engaged ALL youth... recruited kids to participate in music... any sort of music... to simply engage in SOMETHING? Back to the point... if you are complaining about drum corps being dead to you.... complaining that it isn't somehow magically frozen in time... not only is that view entirely unrealistic, it is unbelievably selfish... and a bit sad. One powerful memory I have as a young kid was sitting near the entrance of a grocery store absolutely mesmerized by incredible new Asteroids machine near the door. I was absolutely amazed by it, but didn't have any money. An old guy came out of the check out, seeing me standing there, the look on my face.... dropped a quarter in the machine... told me he had the same look when he was my age and pinball machines came out.... and motioned for me to play. Though he likely didn't care much for Asteroids or even understand it... he understood that feeling and helped me have my turn. A simple, sympathetic generosity that sort of stuck with me. What I'm getting at... it isn't important that you get the current state of the activity or even like it... but it is the current generations turn... so you can either shut up and watch, drop a quarter and see a kid's eyes light up just as yours did or walk out the ####### door. Pick one, please, because I'm more than tired of seeing selfish old geezers keep spoiling kids' turn.

  18. I agree that there are plenty of charities that do more good for the world than drum corps. That said, they did not impact me. My life would be different without drum corps. My life is not really different if a few thousand people in some far away place that I have never met and will never meet don't die from lack of medical care this year. I've argued this before regarding Chase and people took offense, but really, everyone that is voting for certain charities, is in fact saying that those charities are the most important charities to them. And that is fine. Everyone is entitled to put different values on different things.

  19. Oregon Crusaders and Academy each get $100,000 through the support of the Drum Corps community...how awesome would that be? And how many of the other 98 gifts of $25,000 will go towards other pageantry related organizations? THIS IS THE GOLD MINE WE ALL DREAM ABOUT FOR OUR GROUPS, PEOPLE! Put your philosophical differences aside and get our beloved Drum Corps into this free money! Less than 2 days to vote! It all ends Nov. 22! Chase created the criteria and populated the list of who they will be giving the money away to, and whether you think Drum Corps is a worthy cause, it is OUR cause. We can all get on board and help a TON of our groups as the cost of doing this rises and rises! Nothing wrong with that! My group is Oregon, but we support all the groups! Vote for OC and then all the other links are readily available in the Chase search bar - 10 votes! Cascades, Crossmen, Colts, Academy - just to name a few...post the others in here as well. Just vote! This is KILLER! https://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/charities/931285710-oregon-crusaders?src=twitter

  21. Pioneer definitely could use more votes! We have been reaching out to alumni and supporters, but can use all of the additional help that we can get to stay in the running! There are a lot of people on this board that want to see Pioneer do well, both now and into the future. This grant money opens doors that at this point in time are currently closed due to a decline in our primary source of fundraising. This is your opportunity to step forward and help the corps in a meaningful way! I can assure that any grant money that we get will be used to further educate our members in a similar way as we have been for the past 50 years! Vote Now for Pioneer: Chase Community Giving

  25. While I'd like to see corps use older shows as launching points for new interpretations and programs, I do not think I'd care for a corps simply restating an old show. A few of the ones I'd like to see tried again, and funny enough all from the same couple of years. - Belshazzar's Feast (Star '90) - yeah, I'm with everyone else. Crown needs to do this, and the sooner the better. There are a bunch of other tunes from the piece as well, so there's lots of room to pick and choose from various meters, textures and voices. - New World Symphony (Phantom '89) - this is one that would likely start and end NWS, but I could definitely see the center of the program borrowing from other works as well. (Especially considering Phantom's drum feature back then was from Slavonic Dances, not Sym. No. 9!) I truly enjoyed Glassmen's take on it several years ago. - Gloria (Cavaliers '89) - another program that would likely look much different in a current arrangement style, but the music is so friggin' pretty that it would work fine. These days, I couldn't see the Cavaliers performing it - more likely a group like Boston, BK or The Academy. Mike

  39. DCI has grown to a stage (this is a cool thing) where they have sort of hit a ceiling and to push past this, the function of the board should really be reevaluated. Currently, the board has a very mixed role... mixing business aspects with various logistical aspects of the execution of activities of the group. This was fine for a number of years, but recently started to find clear limitations (see G7 issue) and unless there is a bit of a restructure... not only will there be a cap on potential, but similar issues will persist. Now, if you separate the logistical issues from the board responsibilities and charge them with exclusively business issues... questions arise: 1) Are corps directors best suited for board positions, given their current responsibilities? 2) Emphasis should be placed on explore opportunities for external partnerships and revenue generation. How should this shift of emphasis be reflected in the board? 3) It is only about generating cash to the organization, which will then be distributed to the individual corps based on a number of factors. How can corps directors not only have sufficient bandwidth to address these issues, but how can they do this objectively, outside of the context of the unique and immediate needs of their own organizations? 4) While many corps directors have considerable experience in generating revenues of several million, there is a threshold that they simply do not have experience in crossing. In order to successfully cross this threshold, the board should be composed exclusively of individuals that have experience in generating revenues in excess of the current revenue targets. Again... the board should only be about the business aspects of the organization and laser focused on generating CASH. All other issues are a distraction and are holding the organization back.

  40. People are upset that DCI wasn't up front about the edits to Crown and Cavies. We all knew about Madison. But nothing about Crown and Cavies being edited as much as they were. To me, it's not that big of a deal. And it's up to DCI to obtain sync right.... i feel like we have gone over this a million times. It was just bad business not being up front with the edits, WHILE taking the shows down off of FN out of no where. Bad moves. We are paying decent money for these things... I see no problem with people complaining when they weren't up front with what was going to be included on DVD. Kind of when they weren't clear that they were taking off all the judges and commentary.... Luckily, they have been putting out a consistently better product every year, especially now that we have been in the oil can for 3 years. They perfect their set up more and more, and the place is great for recording high quality video. No sun glare, consistent lighting, and they have dealt pretty well with the sound. In fact, I would rather watch the DVD than be there live, because unless to are sitting in a certain small area, it's sub par. (not to say if I had the money I wouldn't go anyway... it's still Finals...)

  41. No one here is suggesting that DCI deliberately tried to pull the wool over anyones eyes. But at some point someone with the organization needs to stand up and take responsibility or at least give the fans a reasonable explanation. Leaving it to the fans to bicker over whose fault it is is not fair. Was it Phantom's in 2008... or Scouts, Cavies, or Crowns in 2011. We are owed an authentic explanation. It is time to quit passing the buck. DCI rules this activity with an iron fist and thus has a responsibility to the member organizations and the fans. This type of stuff makes the organization look completely incompetent. The fact that they left this discussion to those of us in the forums is simply inexcusable. Someone screwed up and it wasn't you or me.

  42. None. More often than not they retread-type shows don't come close to living up to expectations or past glory. If I wanted to see a classic show from a favorite corps I'd take the ten minutes to watch the show performed on Fan Network. For every Phantom 2008 show that does a great job modernizing and re-imagining a classic, there are several others that fall short of past greatness (SCV 2005 & 1992, Cadets 2009, Cavaliers 1997, etc); I'd MUCH rather corps do fresh show designs than try to recapture past triumphs

  45. I hear you on that. It is suddenly as if Cavaliers and Carolina Crown were disqualified for over aged members...They are made to simply disappear. ala Bridgemen 1977. DCI is the governing organization and they are not doing their jobs in securing music rights... if this is not their duty then whose is it? I really don't want to hear any more of the pass the buck crap that has been going on for a while. STAND UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OR FIND ANOTHER JOB. What else do they do besides finding stadiums with crappy acoustics? I can't wait for the DCI main office apologist to launch their attack... I can take whatever can be dished..... But lets get real they have become too comfortable in their positions and are no longer responsible to the corps members or the fans who pay their salaries. (Can you tell I am mad?... I AM!) No more excuses.... if they cant do their jobs then it is time to find someone that can. Drum corp may be still be a non profit organization, but it is time to act a little more professionally. P.S. This comment is obviously more in reference to the recent removal of Cavies and Crown from the fan network than DVD. There is simply no way I would order that from DCI at this point just to receive their surprise package of deletions.

  46. seriously? Now I remember why I never post on here - you people don't listen. At all. How can you ##### about the stuff on Fan Net being pulled? You want DCI to leave it up and get SUED over it? Again, if I'm gonna get mad, it's going to be at the corps staff that went ahead and programmed material they weren't 100% sure they could get copyright or sync-rights for. You people complain a lot, but don't offer a solution. Because there ISN'T ONE, other than doing stuff that you know you can get permission for. And stop "threatening" on a DCP forum to stop buying DVDs or Blu Rays from DCI. I'm sure they'll live without your $100, bc there are plenty of people that understand the copyright world and realize where the fault lies. Anytime you do ANYTHING that isn't public domain, you risk not getting rights. PERIOD.
    -1 points
  47. P.S. - Musclebud, they are giving a reasonable explaination - sync rights. That is perfectly reasonable. As far as Phantom - did you ever think that maybe that was at the request of the corps? A la Crown 2010, when the kid blew out his leg? (which was HORRIBLE... happened right in front of me)
