  1. Nah. No one talked about that time when Paul Rennick went to SCV. Nothin' on DCP, that's for sure.

  2. Wow, you guys seem to be pretty rough on a corps that's doing exactly what they should be doing. The Bridgemen Alumni are exactly what they say they are: an ALUMNI corps. And as an alumni corps that's based off a great corps from DCI's earlier days, I think most people would be disappointed if they played anything other than what they're playing now. If the Star Alumni corps decided to keep playing every year, they probably would never differ much if at all from what they did at semi's, and judging by what some of you have said your opinions of that corps would probably change drastically if that ever happened. That's the difference between alumni corps and regular DCA corps, and why some organizations have both. Leave the change to the DCA corps and let the alumni keep entertaining the nostalgic. Oh and personally I would absolutely LOVE to see the Bridgemen perform at semi's, but not that and Allentown in the same year.

  3. Hey, if DanielRay thinks what we are doing is "kind of sad" then I KNOW that we are just fine! ;P Seriously, we have no desire to compete. We are not the only Alumni corps that does this, year in and year out, because we love to perform, for us, but more importantly for our fans. There seem to still be a few of those, so we will keep doing it! :) There's more to drum corps than competing (whether DCI or DCA), and given the option of doing a one-time only gig at DCI or an annual gig at Allentown (as one of several shows and parades each year), I will take the latter every day.

  4. I don't know why all these people stayed around and are standing and clapping? I guess the couple of empty seats are youse guys going for Hot Dogs! Save some room for this year....

  5. Yes. This is just about entertainment, nothing more nothing less. Filling a 15-20 minute slot late on a Friday evening with something the majority of the audience will appreciate.

  6. The average age of an alumni corps makes competition pretty tough. drill is too advanced. Oh and Bridgemen and others are totally doing rehash. Always some new twists on things. I'll go on record and predict Bayonne won't do the company front on their knees in the civil War Suite this year. Why? Too hard getting up and down. Yet fans that stay to watch alumni corps, at least the best of them, always get their moneys worth. Cabs Alumni year in and year out gets the best reaction of the night. Bridgemen isn't that far behind. Fans like the trip down memory lane. Up until last year, fans complained about the music competing corps used...hello Alumni corps to fill the void and send people home happy. Maybe you should watch a few, then you'd get it. But then again, in your eyes, once done, forever trash right?

  7. Given the same amount of time Star Alumni would of had to prepare I'm sure The Bridgemen Alumni would put on an equally classy show.

  8. On Wednesday afternoon, 200+ Tournament Of Bands students, parents and many members of the TOB administration and members of the National Judges Association invaded Surf's home rehearsal site, aka "Vokie" to rehearse for the 2011 TOB All Star Bands participation in the ABC6/Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade. The students come from all over TOB's region of PA, NJ, DE, WV and MD. In 4 short hours, these students came together to form a HUGE band that not only marched in the Parade, but also participated in the Grand Finale on the famed steps of The Philadelphia art Museum. If you've seen the Rocky movies, you know these steps. None of that would have been possible without the assistance from The Jersey Surf, director Bob Jacobs, his support staff of Brian Prato and Bill Ives, members of the corps and others connected to the corps. They not only donated housing for rehearsal, they also provided dinner for the TOB students and staff as well as bussing to the hotel in Center City Philadelphia, snares, tenors and bass drums for the battery to play on and also Tubas for the tuba section. The Surf's assistance with this project since it was begun in 2009 has been the key to having the project period. Without their assistance, the TOB All Star Band would not exist. On behalf of all of us with TOB,NJA and the All Star Band, A HUGE thank you to Jersey Surf for all of your assistance with this project. Other sponsors and donors include: Uniform accessories by DeMoulin Brothers, flags by Beck Design, guard uniforms by A Wish Come True, percussion sticks/mallets and matching Zildjian cymbals by Progressive Music, and the Hawthorne Caballeros DCA Drum and Bugle Corps.

  9. The rest of the Olds mello was not ignored. Here it makes a very stable monitor stand. The monitor pivots on a lazy susan bearing assembly mounted on a 4x4 electrical box cover. It latches into either portrait or landscape mode with a double-secret spring-tension mechanism. PivotPro software keeps the image upright.

  12. Reading, PA (November 27, 2011) – The ten-time Drum Corps Associates world champion Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce the corps' 2012 production: The Black Symphony With this year's production, the Buccaneers will take audiences on a journey through colors to black, exploring a variety of moods and textures associated with color as we celebrate the color black for what it is: powerful, elegant, formal, classic, bold and regal. Just as all colors in the spectrum when combined together form the color black, all sections of the Buccaneers when combined together produce something much larger and more entertaining than the sum of the corps' individual parts. This year's production represents a slight change in program style for the corps, with the introduction of contemporary pop music into the repertoire and a vigorous fusion of both the visual and musical elements into a single concept. But the program will bear all of the hallmarks of a Reading Buccaneers production – excitement, entertainment, excellence in every caption and every section, power, and grace, all with a classical and symphonic twist and a few surprises sure to entertain fans. The journey will take place in four parts: Warm Colors--fire, passion, energy, happiness, enthusiasm The program opens with burst of speed, color and life as we perform an original composition by brass arranger Mark Lortz. Cool Colors--calmness, relaxation, groove, texture, hip The journey continues as the Buccaneers set the mood with the driving, accented rhythms of The Four Sections for Orchestra, Mvt. IV by contemporary American composer Steve Reich (b. 1936). We will explore the minimalist quality of the music while adding layers of melody. Shadows--color vs. darkness, an area where direct light cannot reach due to an obstruction, a silhouette The Buccaneers will bring this mood to life with the unique and haunting "New World" from Dancer in the Dark, by Björk Guömundsdóttir (b. 1965). The lush and beautiful vocal melody, set against pulsing industrial rhythms, will serve as the perfect transition to the arrival point of our journey. BLACK--loud, fast, powerful, bold, classical, regal, elegant The journey comes to a rousing and triumphant conclusion as we return to the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), with his epic and iconic 1812 Overture. Premiered in 1882 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon, this grand piece is full of unforgettable melodies and moments and will be the perfect vehicle to celebrate the color black. We look forward to sharing this ambitious and exciting program with fans this year! The Buccaneers will host Winter Camp #1 on Saturday December 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, December 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., for brass and percussion players. Both rehearsal camps will be held at Twin Valley High School, Elverson, PA. All brass and percussion players interested in membership in the 2012 Reading Buccaneers are invited to attend. For more information or for questions about membership in the Buccaneers, visit www.readingbuccaneers.org and click on "Join Us" or email Membership Manager Karen Wildonger at membership.manager@readingbuccaneers.org. Founded in 1957, the mission of the Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps is to provide men and women of all ages a unique and enriching educational experience in the performing arts in which they develop as individuals and as performers. The Buccaneers were founding members of Drum Corps Associates and won the first-ever DCA World Championships in 1965 and won nine additional titles since. 16. I swore I wouldnt get into ANY xxxxxxx match with you. ( and wont ) BUT as far as your comments I may agree with moving forward, new ways of doing things, new toys, a new approach to running our activity, progress, not being stuck in the past BUT you comments on not returning for a moment within a venue that many might be entertaining during a current competition , theres no reason to listen to a person who clearly does not understand the basic premise and wide range of supporters of this activity or even what this activity stands for... JMO..out!!!!! Being a close party of their past I would like to see them entertain at DCI BUT only if they invited many to join in as 27th did and go way over the top and not try to be something other than what they were back in the late 70s early 80s

  17. I don't think there are really any good analogues out there for DCI. It really is sort of a purple unicorn (it ain't the NBA, PGA, etc.). The main thing is just treat it as you would any other business... focus on the fundamentals and try to bring in as much cash possible from diverse sources (as has been discussed before). So, about the issue of splitting revenues with corps... it should absolutely not be some blanket contract. The most effective model where there are unique and private negotiations with each individual group contracted for the tour that are subject to strict non-disclosure agreements. Stop and think about that one for a second... how effective of a workplace would you have if either A) people got the same salary or tiers of salary .... or ... B) everyone knew exactly what everyone else was getting paid It would be a disaster. DCI is no different. So much of the political issues of today are caused by trying to run the group as a transparent organization where everyone has equal say and equal participation. There is no successful business out there that is run on a model anywhere close to this. As Cook was, I am more in favor of an absolute dictatorship that generates significantly more cash than currently due to having the flexibility of structure and operations to do so. Individuals corps will be better off... making more money and having a more stable sources of support. Backing up... DCI is a business... but it is effectively structured little different than the PTA. You cannot choose a more ineffective structure for business if you tried.

  18. How many businesses are there out there with revenues in the tens of millions that have been operating pretty much just 'as is' in terms of board structure and general operations for the past 40 years. There are very few. If DCI is to thrive, not just tread water, there needs to be a major overhaul in terms of: 1) Board composition, structure and responsibilities 2) Corporate structure 3) Branding and brand positioning 4) Revenue sources This is not radical... every company out there goes through this from time to time... nor should it be controversial. This is just basic standard operating procedure.

  19. Might work - they could call it "Christmas at Sarah Jones' House" and Little Geoffrey could be her grandson except he has a penchant for decorating the Christmas tree with dead squirrels. Guess the demons got to him. Now that I think of it, maybe "An Amityville Christmas" might be a better concept - that way, they can still use the uniforms from last year.

  27. Oh, I know, I know! How about a show titled "The Old Testament vs. The New Testament"! Kind of like Angels and Demons except it's the Christians vs. the Jews. With the pit dressed as Ghandi sitting crossed-legged on the sidelines playing finger cymbals. And the guard can be radical Muslims pretending to chop off the judges heads. Is that better? Jeesh. Lighten up. Not everything has to be inclusive does it? (What you don't know is that Hop is planning a WWII Christmas show as depicted from the Nazi standpoint. So, yea, no Jews allowed in his corps! Jeesh.)

  28. Not doubtful at all. I have first-hand knowledge of the situation, and the program is a HUGE draw for Surf in 2012. What a corps plays, especially for corps in the lower half of the rankings, is enormously important.

  41. Now that I am no longer a point man for DCA and very much out of the loop information wise... I join the rest of you in relying on DCP for timely updates. This is an interesting thread (despite the mispelling in the heading) and should be taken seriously. So far, we have identified several corps who at least for now plan on competing in Annapolis 2012. I would ask a few things - call them guidelines for this thread: 1. Let's put the levity elsewhere. While I have judged the blousemen (I'd tell you where but then Donny A. would have to shoot you), let's not confuse this thread with delightful fantasy. 2. Those who post a corps should have enough knowledge to state whether the corps' intent "wishful thinking though it may be" for 2012 is All Aged Competitive, mini corps, junior corps or alumni type exhibition corps. It is my belief that the creator of this thread intended it to be DCA all aged competitive. We're all still hoping to see a coninued growth in DCA prelims and I for one, see Annapolis as a huge opportunity... 3. Don't tease... if you don't know, don't post or at least don't post as if you KNOW what a corps is doing... ask the question if you don't... as the person just did with Music City Legend... a very good question. 4. Some unofficial sage advice from a retired warrior in this arena: It's mid-November first camp time already. Over the next 3 weeks, most competing corps will have their first camp. If you have even the slightest possibility of sending a competing corps to DCA prelims... you ought to know by now... If you don't know, you're probably talking 2013 at a minimum. There are steps to follow that take time. Hotels are already booked for most corps. If you're thinking of bringing a corps and haven't been in touch with dca - you should correct that NOW. The name you need to know is Dick Eschenman, DCA Business Manager. businessmanager@dcacorps.org should work fine. Thanks... it will be fun to see if DCA can approach that elusive 30 corps in prelims mark. Oh and.... buy my book and help support my trip to Annapolis... Tom
