  3. dude( or dudette ), Just do you. it's your marching years. Don't give a #### about what others say, I marched a different corps than the one i am now a part of. I enjoyed my experience but here, at the scouts for me, is where i created a home and thats all that matters, not what others think, or even scores reflect. Enjoy Academy.

  4. I don't think they can hold up to last year because of minor staff changes and poor vet retention(oops)....

  6. Just a random interjection here... Star 92 is probably the most underrated drum corps of all time. That hornline was unreal, and the things they were doing visually were actually more revolutionary than 93, as 93 just built on this. People are often dismissive of this show, simply because of the flash, but they were killing it until quarters... but the judges just didn't get the movement... and dumped them in visual. They were running their ##### off almost the whole show, had killer feet and doing all this crazy innovative stuff... while we stood on dice, wandered around a bit, and just sort of stolled through the last tune.... and we beat them in visual by 4 tenths??? Go back and watch Star 92... look at the recaps again... you'll see how little sense it makes. I'd say 92 is why Star left drum corps... not 93.

  9. As many here have said before: if you start with great music, you stand a wonderful chance of being a great corps... Wise choice, imo -

  10. The Happy Holiday's what? Sorry, the grammarian in me couldn't let that get past my red pen. But in the spirit of Christmas, I'm going to turn away. At least you didn't spell Bluecoats as two words.

  13. People need to stop making excuses.....every year I watch every single world guard in prelims, then go out for a nice dinner and still make it back for the first guard in A class finals. If people really want to get back for the first guard they can......

  14. If you can find a recording of Allyn Fergusons "Pictures at an Exhibition Framed in Jazz", this could be an extreme WIN for Madison. I have it on vinyl, but have been unable to find a CD version.

  17. Meaning I love the future more than the past. The huge leaps of the 70's and 80's were because the guys creating then were more in love with the future than the past. The past is cool, but less meaningful than the present, and not quite as interesting as the future.

  19. What absolutely grips me is, in '96, at 9:50, the camera gets a shot of the female drum major's face, right at that moment when she realizes that her entire summer of pain, work, and love is coming to an end in the next few seconds. The change in her expression reduces to nearly tears as it sinks in. But she doesn't break down. By the cutoff she has a broad, satisfied grin on her face. Her expression as she turned to bow to the screaming crowd is priceless. The epitome of the activity.

  20. This may sound strange coming from a guard girl but I wouldn't mind seeing corps lean towards less dancing and more flag and rifle work.

  29. I'm a younger DCI fan and the 27th Lancers folded before I was born, but I admire and respect this corps more than most others. They were showmen, they were loud, but they were classy and they had this "old school" traditional style about them. If I had a chance to bring one corps back from retirement, it would be 27.

  30. Let me share some first-hand information on WHEN it was determined that the corps would "retire". As for rumors circulating, I never heard a one from anybody throughout the 86 season. That would include Finals week. Any rumors that may have floated were probably generated by people outside the organization who could not believe the endurance witnessed of the members of the 86 Lancers. That year, scores were NOT announced until the end of Prelims. Each corps had their own summary sheet and shared their numbers backstage. Our staff knew the number needed to pass the Troopers for a Finals spot. That year, there were (5) corps wrestling for the final-four spots. After the performance, I remember a fellow management member walking up the hill with tears in her eyes carrying our summary sheet. A few feet away, the corps was setting up for the Corps photo that Stephanie talks about. Darlene Bonfiglio Stannard (RIP, dear sister) asked me to accompany her Dad for the rest of the show. I remember George and I standing under the goal post in the end zone. Neither of us said a word. We were both in a sad state. As the Tour Manager for the 86 Lancers, I can tell everyone that the first time I ever heard news of the corps going inactive was when Gale Royer (RIP) approached the two of us crying in sadness after hearing of us not making it! George simply turned to his dear old friend, gave him a hug, and told him that "....We can't go on like this!" Most of the other reasons stated are all true. Finals Revenue, Busses, Equipment concerns and future recruiting were all grave concerns. Ask any 13th place corps how difficult recruiting is for the following year. Imagine consecutive years at 13th (85 & 86) and the picture becomes more bleak. As he is quoted in our 35th Anniversay Video, "2-7", George explains that he did not want the corps to fall from grace and "....dwindle into non-existence. (He) wanted the corps to go out as a Champ!" It took us (8) years to grant George's wish and go out as Champs in 94 at Foxboro. For the record, if 94 never happened, I would say that 86 was the most rewarding year I ever spent in Drum Corps. The members of the 1986 27th Lancers will always be remembered as the bravest and most pleasant group I have ever worked with.

  31. 27th always had a commitment to its members that those people who chose to march in 27th and were accepted as members should bear as little financial responsibility as possible. Like most corps 2-7 relied on their Bingo income and "personal appearances" (parades, openings, etc.), as well as "prize money" from DCI to run their operation. Members had little financial obligation other than the bare necessities - a small (I think around $100 back in the mid-70's) tour fee, purchase your own shoes, boots, gloves, etc., and locals were asked to volunteer as bingo helpers when the rehearsal schedule allowed it. Throughout the years, particularly in the early years, there were specific fund raising commitments (the corps actually sold fresh eggs door to door!!), but George and Patsy preferred that the members concentrate on their performance, and not on holding a can at the local traffic circle. That being said, when I joined in winter of 1975, the buses were old. They were (I'm pretty sure) 1957 GMC coaches. Forget the missing a/c, lack of bathrooms, and other creature comforts, these buses ran only through the blood, sweat and tears of the management staff and the drivers (and I'm not using bs&t as a cliche; I witnessed all three.) We spent many a tour night crowded onto two buses while the third was repaired. No, we were no different than many other corps in that respect, and that isn't my point. It reached the stage in 1986, where, as legend has it, a member approached George B. and said she was afraid to get on the bus for the next segment of the trip because she was afraid of what might happen. Others may embellish this, or give their own version of the story, but this is the story as it was told to me. George took this to heart. (And if you know George, his kids - all of us - were always the number one concern). He announced that until the organization could put newer, safer, vehicles on the road, the corps would be inactive, as the safety of all members of the organization were first and foremost. As far as I know, there was no talk of disbanding the corps before their performance at DCI prelims. I wasn't there, but I've never heard that. Repeating 2/3 of the 1979 show in 1980 was one of the best things the corps ever did. They improved on a great product and used enough freshness to make it seem like a whole new show - and they nearly won the whole shebang!!!

  33. Speaking of poor vet retention, when vets of one corps go to march another corps, it's usually to one that's placing higher than the one they're a vet of.

  39. Of course we all expect them to come out every hear with a highly entertaining jazz, rock, show tune, or lately...retro type of show. So I can see how this choice might throw a lot of people off. But Robert Smith's arranging will likely be marvelous to the Mussorgsky pieces. I can see how these classical pieces could be arranged into a jazz mood. There are certain elements to a show I think we all expect from Madison. Do I think Madison can maintain all of these elements with the music choice they made this year? Absolutely. The last few years I have been nothing but impressed. I feel that they will continue to perform exceptionally and more importantly entertain for 2012 with this choice.

  41. So I've been hearing that the 2012 Blue Knights will be doing Stravinsky's Firebird Suite! Which will include Danse Infernale. What do you all think of it? Same design team as 2011 (Jay Bocook, Ralph Hardimon, and Marc Sylvester.)
