  1. More like some of us feel that insulting comments with no basis in fact hurt the entire activity. And some of us have long memories when it comes to remembering from whom those comments come from. Funny how people will close their eyes to how closely DCI, DCA, Minis, Alumni-types, whatever are related. And how if any one piece goes downhill it hurts the others.

  2. Just to let everyone know, www.guardbuzz.com is back up and running for the 2012 season. I did a complete overhaul of the site from scratch. Hopefully it's nicer to look at and quick to load! I should be able to get rankings up much quicker this year since I have completely automated the process (thank you Python). I'm also adding in rankings for the regional A classes. Until the first week of competition, all the divisions are blank, except for the regional A classes which display the "end of the year" rankings for those divisions. The ads are still there, but if I get enough donations to cover the cost of hosting the site, I'll take them down for the rest of the season. The Google Ads barely cover the hosting cost over the course of a season as it is. I'm looking forward to what the season has in store!

  5. It's DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS! Plain and simple. It isn't DCA vs. DCI, Young vs. Old, Them vs. Us. It's the activity and that's all! Some of you people are so far gone I am surprised they let you on DCP. In fact I am surprised no one from DCP has chimed in to silence you. A history lesson is needed here. Wasn't drum corps started by men returning from war? Adults? Junior corps came to fruition and TODAY we have all kinds of drum corps and it's all over the world!DCI, DCA, Alumni, Mini Corps, etc. Drum Corps is Drum Corps so stop the petty poop that you are spewing and either support it or go away.

  6. The only thing DCA lacks is DrillmanSop06. And I think we can all agree that it's a clear-cut case of addition by subtraction.

  9. If you'd pay attention before you post and to what the post said, you'll notice two things 1. It was not made to stir up controversy... "Need not worry folks, I think all will be very pleased with the new Executive Director to be announced soon!" 2. The thread was started almost 5 months ago... to announce that Vincent was leaving.

  10. Oops,,,anyway. I agree! Moe Knox isa legend, and should NOT be overlooked on such a very thin, if not in fact, hypocritcal reason.

  11. The thread started last September. Chadwick isn't likely to be trying to stir any controversy - he's always a staunch Spirit supporter.

  12. its a get together of women where the future bride gets stuff the future husband usually doesn't want or need. Typically, nobody is nude at these showers. Somebody would have to go to the bachelor party if they are looking for any of that requirement.

  15. Re-reading through these posts makes me kinda sad. In general the marching world (believe it or not) is slowly going away and so are great orchestra pieces and composers. In general I think this is a GREAT idea to show the world that drum corps/marching/instrumental music is still here. I'm not saying you have to like what they are doing... but what i'm trying to say is support them for what they are doing. I actually do hope this group does well!

  16. I think Howard would love it! He does have intellect you know! He is smart enough to see talent. Look at some of the stuff that made it in last year....a guy diving into a pool, motor cycles that go around in a caged globe, a couple who do quick change.....The Edge who can play ballads, pop songs, classical, jazz, rock, etc. If you have watched the show then you would get it! You think Dave and Joey haven't looked into all of that?

  17. <This is the single most fiercely logical post I've ever seen on DCP. Good show.> I'm with you...while DCP is not (necessarily...) a competition... Bruckner8 wins... As I've read through this argument over the last week, I imagined the episode on which the Edge appears. I might go something like this: "Well folks, next up we have a real treat...these folks - and there are about 20 of them - hail from the world of marching band! Please welcome...THE EDGE' (cue golf clap...) Judge #1 (not Stern) - "Hi! Welcome to the America's Got Talent' - what are you going to do for us today?!" (Edge rep...) - Well, we're going to play 'Stella by Starlight', that great jazz standard...but like you've never heard it before!' "OK - here we go folks...please welcome...THE EDGE" (begin unknown music in complex, if excellent, arrangement...cameras pan to judges, with each one getting a good 5 seconds of face time. One smiles only with the mouth...eyes remain neutral. Another looks up at the ceiling...and Howard Stern looks like someone is attempting to feed him a rejected Fear Factor entree. In the 65 seconds of performance, the Edge get 45 seconds of camera time...) After performance, the host comes back on...'Wow...give it up folks for THE EDGE!' (cue better applause...more enthusiastic...because, of course, The Edge was 1000% better than the audience thought it was going to be...) Stern gets out in front of everyone...'You...you people...really? Tell me, what future do you see for this...this show you've got? Vegas? People in Vegas would ignore Sinatra to get back to the video poker machine...I mean, really! Corporate gigs? Eh...maybe...but then, you've got too many of those, what, tubas...up there - and trumpetey things...Corporations want drums, man...DRUMS! Not bando geek crap. You want my advice? Scrap the scrap metal, and just bang on some cans. Hey...that's a great idea for a show - and I THOUGHT OF IT! Bang on a can...I like it - hey...nebbish off stage! Call my agent and have him trademark that idea...it's mine and I thought of it!' Judge #2 - "Hey - you folks are REALLY GOOD! Really...I like it...I totally...like...liked you and all!" Judge #3 (British accent...because...well, it's required...) = "Nice work you blokes...and blokettes...I dug it - but...well, I just don't know..." Sadly - this is what I fear they're in for. Will they do well? As Bruckner says...excellence should be the goal. But as we all know (and Bruckner does, too) - there is always room for more excellence. So no matter how well they do, whether they're dropped right off or make it to the finals, they'll be striving to get better. Would that everyone in their own world of work and personal life did the same...

  18. Wow Sam, this comment surprises me. So it's all about what YOU want? Isn't that the crux of the argument against all the dinosaurs who hate amps||electronics||vocals||whatever... that they are being selfish? It sounds to me like the image that you want people to have of Drum Corps is really the image of DCI drum corps, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, I will freely admit that on a technical level, DCI drum corps represents the absolute best in our activity. It is not, however, the only game in town, which I know you knonw. Look, you may not "want" people to think that drum corps isn't "adults doing marching band" but guess what? For quite a few folks, that's EXACTLY what it is. Also, to the masses, even your Cadets are just "kids doing marching band". Would you like to know what I want? (probably not, but here goes anyway...) I want people to have an image of drum corps as an activity that strives to entertain audiences while challenging its members to be their best.

  19. funny. The Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni corps performs dozens of times a year, usually get the best reaction of the night, yet get no score. so do we "need" scores for everything we do?

  21. Moe Knox belongs in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Long overdue. I enthusiastically support the nomination and acceptance of Moe Knox as a Full Member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Moe is a man who has traveled throughout these United States, many times at his own expense, to document for posterity, the history of corps and events. He spent countless hours at field-side tables, showing his photos to spectators and participants, patiently answering all questions no matter how trite. He should be considered for Full Member status. Mr. Knox's photos and his ambassadorship at shows has "enhanced our visual understanding of the marching world through years of drum corps photojournalism". The WDCHOF committee passed over Moe in the selection process to the Hall of Fame, allegedly because he "made money off drum corps." In fact, the WDCHOF has never honored anyone for photojournalism, yet honored the owners of the for-profit journals for which they too photos. Moe Knox should be inducted.

  24. Last summer on tour, we had a laundry day (who knows where). We ageout vets put in our laundry, did our chores, etc. then went to get some pizza. The guy running the pizza place said "Hey, are you Troopers?" Turns out he was a baritone in BD from '74 to '78.

  26. I'm sort of surprised why you'd care so much what the typical viewer that watches " Americas's Got Talent " thinks about Drum Corps.... or anything else for that matter. Most of the viewers who watch this show with regularity probably can't connect the dots between what they are watching and how this might be different with other musical groups. Plus, if they're watching " America's Got Talent " they probably don't have a visual "image" of anything at all that lasts beyond the next commercial break. So don't sweat it.

  30. I'm not bothered by any of this. I come here for amusement, and sometimes teach, always learn. I'm not angry. Flabbergasted sometimes, lol, at the emotion/logic demonstrated, but that's half the fun. All I did was claim that THE VIDEO, as presented by the *OP* wasn't a good measure of Excellence! (esp compared to the title of THIS FORUM) I couldn't care less if The Edge went on TV! More power to them; I hope they blow everyone away! But let's go over a few truths, to set the record straight: -The OP is advertising this opportunity, drumming up hype (Good!) -The OP says "sent in a video" -The OP links to a video at the end, in a way that felt to me like "Hey everyone, check this out! Isn't this great!?" -The OP is in DCI World Class Forum From there, I inserted my OPINION that DCI World Class is the epitome of Excellence. Then I watched the video. The dichotomy struck me, and I posted my concern. Since then, there have been comments supportive of The Edge, like so (paraphrased): "So what if it isn't excellent, at least [blah blah]" "I'm sure the video they sent in is better than this one" "It was the end of Mini-Corps, an Encore!" "I've seen it better at other times" Hmm...looks like tacit (and direct) confirmation... And of course, we had the litany of posts sympathetic to the "entertainment factors" and "the star power," all of which deflect focus from the Excellence aspect, or completely discount it! (Valid choice, BTW...it *is* AGT after all!) This has been 100% logical exercise for me. Obviously, it's a lot more emotional for others. I can watch videos of myself and say "Yikes, that isn't excellent." Nothing more than objective logic. I might even have valid reasons, but it doesn't change the truth, lol.

  32. That's funny...I've always thought that an I&E competition was part of what Drum Corps was all about. Many of these competitions are held on a stage, which is the venue in the video.

  33. Duh...there's no "stage" in drum corps. Except for cadets 08...wait, maybe thats a bad example...

  34. Any performance ensemble featuring Joey Pero, Al Chez and Roland Garceau would more than meet "credibility" and excellence" criteria for a whole bunch of folks, myself included. Bruckner8, I have no idea who you are... but if your nose was any farther up in the air, it would be touching the International Space Station.

  35. 100+ horns, a full battery with alternates, and a few excused from the pit for college obligations (but full) on Saturday night. A number less by 1230p when ensemble started on Sunday. The guard will not return to camp until April. There are photos on www.facebook.com/carolinacrown if you would like to see them. The design team is still refining ideas in regard to the show, so no announcement as of yet... but we hope that the people of DCP will love it.

  36. I also went. They were close to full numbers as some folks had to leave early. The brass sounded good for January and being inside in a gym. The show theme sounds interesting, but like always was too early to say if it’s a good one or not (I thought 09’s “Greener” show was going to be a flop the first time I heard it). I know why Crown waits to announce their show, but personally don’t agree….so I will respect their wishes and I will refrain from spilling any beans about the source music. But will say it’s a perfect fit for Crown’s brass and they seem to have the horses to pull it off. I love to watch the show grow over the coming months. It will be an interesting ride!

  41. Look, I'm not drinking the "SCV to win in '12" punch, not by a long shot, but falling to 8th is unlikely when the biggest problems (design and brass scores) are being attended to in the form of JD and Wozniak. No, no I'm not saying that all problems will be fixed or that no backsliding will happen, I'm just saying that that's unlikely.
    1 point
  42. Well I, for one, doubt that the addition of JD Shaw and George Wozniak to the staff would make SCV place lower than they had in the 2011 season.. Also, because there were so many rookies in the corps for the 2011 season, it's likely that there's gunna a lower number of rookies this season. Meaning, more kids used this whole "marching drum corps" thing.
