  1. Surprised there is not a lot of love for Star 92. The best Star hornline imo, and just slightly better than 91 BD for best line of the decade.

  4. That Cavies '02 David Bertman hornline is the cleanest (albeit not necessarily the loudest) hornline I've ever heard. There should be more love for that kind of dedication to musicianship.

  5. they will go out onto the field at a show and eveyone will yell blooo while one person will think they are booing and start yelling at the people.

  6. As much as I HATE to admit it, I had to say Crown 2009 was the best. I was at finals that year and they blew me the F#%K away. HM to my personal favorite though, the hornline I was apart of...2000 Cadets.

  8. Different audiences and intensity. This is the Junior corps part of DCP, so you're going to get different opinions than in the all-age forum. Competitively, they're not at the top of the DCA ranks, and I do not know their focus. In general DCA corps do not tour as much as DCI corps. DCA corps are "all-age". DCI corps rehearse much more and have more difficult shows. I'm sure this discussion could spark a lot of heated exchanges, so I'd just say look them up go to dcacorps.org for DCA information and dci.org for DCI information. There's probably some videos of the top DCA corps online somewhere. I have no idea about Shenandoah Sound. Sorry, but the answers are there!

  9. I personally thought Cavaliers should have won outright that year. One of the best shows ever put on the field. It also ties SCV 99 as my favorite show ever. Cadets show was great that year, but I would have had Cavaliers about .4-.7 ahead of Cadets during finals week.

  12. Glad this is the reason and not something else like financial problems.

  13. Agreed. That whole era from the mid 90s through the early 2000s was unbelievably mature from a musical standpoint for the Cavaliers. Some of the most expressive percussion sections I've ever heard came from those years, not to mention that unmistakeable horn line sound.

  14. Spataro, Zuccala, Heimbecker to lead Crusaders in 2012 The Boston Crusaders and Executive Director Tom Spataro are pleased to welcome Justin Heimbecker to the team. Effective immediately, Justin will serve as Assistant Director of the Crusaders, aiding in management of the corps from top to bottom. A former senior manager at Youth Education in the Arts, Heimbecker brings with him years of administrative and teaching experience from YEA and currently teaches music in Upper Darby, PA. "I'm honored to join the Crusaders team. From a distance, I've always had great respect for the sense of tradition and pride here. I've recently had an opportunity to learn a great deal about the history and infrastructure of the organization, and I look forward to working with Tom and the entire staff to honor the past, while working to build a very bright future for the Boston Crusaders," said Heimbecker. "Justin is an invaluable asset to our staff for 2012. He is passionate about the activity, and is widely regarded as a terrific administrator with unparalleled skill and dedication. We are truly fortunate to add him to our team," said Tom Spataro. Heimbecker joins Bruno Zuccala on the management team, who is returning for his third year as a consultant for the corps. Bruno came to the Crusaders in 2010 and has been instrumental in the corps' on- and off- field growth in his short time on staff. Working in conjunction with the Executive Director, Heimbecker and Zuccala bring a wide spectrum of experience and knowledge that will help lead the corps to new levels of excellence in the coming years. Spataro continued, "Being able to trust Justin and Bruno to hold the reins of the corps in my absence will enable me to focus on strengthening the company behind the corps, something essential for the survival of a modern drum corps."

  16. Unusual name indeed... for unusual men... I wonder if the good doctor realizes the extra baggage that comes with the name? This includes such things as a strong preoccupation with playing the "Bull Call"... and a strong affinity to lawn chairs...

  21. Oh your right I completely agree Michael Gains was very talented... However, this new drill designer might actually be what The Cavaliers needed. How do we know? We actually don't know until we find out for ourselves. I do wish Michael Gains was still with The Cavaliers no doubt, but lets face it too... things don't stay the same forever. That in mind I am sure The Cavaliers were fully prepared for Mr. Gains to retire WITH HONORS. All in all... I really don't think The Cavaliers are going to be affected in anyway from this... This is a big season for The Cavaliers celebrating so many anniversaries its crazy! We just have to wait and see what happens this summer.

  23. Surprising, no real love for '02 Cavies, which has to be one of the most balanced and in tune hornlines to ever touch a field. Sure, they weren't known for loud, but every sound that came out of those horns was darn near perfect. HM to '05 Cadets, because it was an amazing show

  25. I am very excited for the Bluecoats this year. The show is an incredible concept and the hornline sounded amazing during the call-back camp. I can't wait to see how they move in the rankings and I expect a great reaction from the crowd during their opener.

  28. I saw them (twice) at the first show in 2010. It was no surprise to me to see how they finished. They were just very dirty early season. But it was pretty easy to see (and especially hear) the potential in that program. In any case I don't think you can draw much of a parallel between the two years. Gaines was still there in 2010.

  29. As much as I loved and trusted the staff that just recently left the corps, I know they are in good hands. The show has not been publicly announced yet except for a few recent alumni like myself. I won't reveal and music for the show but I will say it's awesome, not over the top with the concept, the music that I know of makes sense with the title, and everyone knows the music that they are doing. I'm excited to see what they have going for them this season!

  30. Tim Jackson is the visual caption head, and they have a new drill writer. Plus the brass caption head has been been teaching/marching there for around 6 years. Plus they've still got the same brass arranger, they still have Michael Gray, and they've added Dean Westman to the design team. I'm not really sure why all these staff changes are scaring people... 2012 should be an awesome Bloo year. The show sounds great!

  33. I predict no props at all next year. (OK I wish)

  34. Disagree. Having 40 ageouts, with a big number being from their best section (percussion), plus the huge drop from their high expectations placement wise, I think they'll really struggle to stay in finals. Blue Knights seemed really young this year and excelled. If they can avoid the usual exodus to BD and SCV, I see them really flying next year.

  35. Well, it'd be a corps run by DCP for DCP, so I can't imagine there'd be too many things electronic on the field.

  38. In 1993 Star won Brass by themselves. In 1995 Cadets, Madison and Blue Devils tied for Brass. The brass award was decided then by a avarage of all three nights, and when all three nights were taken into effect those three corps tied for high brass.

  41. I agree with what you're saying in principle: a great design team who loses just one piece can still be a great design team. In fact I don't think the Cavies are going to drop out of finals or anything else dramatic. I expect them to still be highly competitive. But -- in my opinion -- some talents are unique and just can't be replaced.
