  1. Looks like the website is blank as well. Does this REALLY surprise anyone? Nagy strikes again.

  2. Here's what I'm not buying. There are probably a lot of "first time" viewers, moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, band boosters, kids, school administrators, etc. who are seeing their first or second winter guard competition live at a local show or WGI regional. If anyone is likely to be offended, it will be these "newbies" who are not as familiar with the activity. The people who subscribe to the Fan Network are probably MUCH more familiar with the activity. People I would consider "vets" and a slightly more educated and involved audience. A "friendly" crowd who is more likely to "get" Fantasia's show. And probably less likely to be offended. The excuse that Fantasia is giving rings hollow. If they are truly concerned that some people might be offended, they would not have chosen that show in the first place. (edited for clarity)

  3. With the rep and the new brass staff, I don't think that baby throwing is going to be in question. I have a feeling that there will be many babies thrown, with or without Music of the Night, but we can all hope, can't we? Or maybe Bottle Dance thrown in? It is an anniversary year....

  4. Now thanks to 3rd and 10...we can actually have a real conversation about the pros and cons about the hire. I don't know why everyone has to jump on someone for being critical; it actually leads to good discussions. Can you imagine a sports show where everyone was positive ALL the time? It just seems like many on DCP would rather we all wear our protective helmets and constantly be nice. Just not realistic and very boring. And besides while I don't think it will be a complete disaster, it will be interesting to see how these two strong personalities, both of whom I've worked with, will work together. It might work and it might not. I wish them the best. But it serves no purpose to post at all if I hold back my true opinions just because they aren't blanket positive statements. Take off your safety helmets people and have a little thicker skin.

  5. Have you seen the photos of the Sop. line? Could be that they have added a few more screamers for 2012. That... IMO, is a good thing.

  7. Not last year's that's for sure. There's enough residual dirt leftover from last year's to put them way behind schedule.

  8. 1. Me actually going on tour 2. I cant wait to see the corps with staff changes shows. 3. Some of the lower corps making finals. Preferably The Academy and Pacific Crest, they have changed their direction along with changes in their staff and have been doing better every season. I cant wait to see what becomes of them this year. 4. BAC coming to the west coast.

  9. You are assuming winning a championship was the absolute all ending factor; whereas the forefront was seemingly always ensuring a positive/uplifting experience for the members, striving for personal and group excellence within the membership, and thrilling the fans..........overall, good things tend to happen when the focus is geared towards that particular type of philosophy and sounds like a plan for success to me.

  10. Maybe that's the OP's point..... if "style" means entertaining as heck, and "substance" means winning championships, then give me "style" 24/7. Many times, for me, "innovative" = booooring. I miss Scott Stewart's presence in the junior circuit. When I read, "Standing O's are fantastic, but...", I don't get it. I don't go to drum corps shows for intellectualism.
    1 point
  11. What were the comparative points to this "innovation?" Where was the State of the Art? The Hornline was _______ than any other corps. ("Louder" is not an answer... see Crossmen 1990) The Drums were _________ than any other corps. The Guard was __________ than any other corps. The drill was __________ than any other corps. The Book was ___________ than any other corps. Madison spent its bank on style rather than substance. Standing O's are fantastic, but there has to be more to a corps in order to win championships. E.g. 1995--certainly one of their most bombastic efforts. Musically, the writing equaled the effectiveness of the program (and face it... they were FAR better than the Cavaliers in Brass Perf. and Repertoire). Visually, it was their typical fourth-rate 1980s drill with an average drumline. 1988 was the exception to their own rule, and they won w/ wonderful design and execution (even though they were MUCH better in Semis). Plus, they had a lot of help from SCV's foul hornline and BD's lifeless visual program. They won by default that year (as did Cadets '90, Cavies '92 and Cavies '01).

  14. I agree, but mostly in terms of stuff the battery could do. Their ideas never caught on consistently with other corps, mostly because the stuff they tried is incredibly difficult. (see 1998 percussion scores for more details) Almost every 90's Madison show had some pretty challenging choreography/instrument switching in the battery that even today would be considered crazy. 1990 had those odd looking Tenors 1991 had a cymbal rack, and even a totally different tuned set of tenors 1992 had the infamous snare to cymbal feature 1993 had the snare+tom add-on feature in Strawberry Soup (while marching) 1994 had another snare+cymbal feature, some marching latin instruments, and a "double battery" feature much like the 2011 Cadets show 1995 had a snare+cymbal+latin drums feature 1996 had 8 TENORS. ... 8 OF THEM. okay. 1997 had the "rotating-pirate-fight-rack-of-cymbals-and-metal" 1998 had players switching from snare to tenor and back again during each movement of the program. At points in the show there were 12 snares and 9 Tenors 1999 ...well... was fairly normal aside from the large battery size So yeah, I give Madison credit for at least trying some crazy stuff during the 90's with their battery.

  16. 1) There's a lot of staff changes. I think some corps are going to have a very refreshing new identity. Phantom is certainly changing a lot lately, interested to see how they do. I think they'll be the same Phantom, but with a new twist. Excited to see Cavaliers with a new drill writer, I think it will be refreshing. 2) Vanguard - That whole show has me jumping out of my seat. It's going to be loud and in your face a lot, but beautiful as well. I have a feeling this is going to be a very memorable show for them. 3) I have a feeling it's going to be a Blue year. I think Blue Devils will take what made last year more fan friendly and keep pushing the envelope as well. They'll have a winning formula I have a feeling. I think Blue Knights are evolving into a very good corps, last years show was a step up in complexity without being weird IMO. I have a friend in BK this year and he said very good things are happening, so this will be interesting. Blue Stars. After last year it seems everyone is counting them out. In the past it seems when a corps has a bad year, they do not let what happened happen again. I think they just need the right formula show wise and they'll GO far. 4) Very interested to see if Boston lives up to the hype and rumors I've heard about them being really far ahead of where they usually are, they could be a fun surprise this summer. 5) Crown, I have a feeling. They've spent a few years in the top 6 and I think it's about their time to really do some damage to that top 3. Not win necessarily, just come out with something very intense and hard. I think it could be their year. I think this year will be just as good as last based on the reps, really looking forward to San Antonio again with my friend who hasn't seen a show yet. She's in for a LOUD suprise huh? (I have a lot of feelings. )

  19. This is not a viable alternative. Online is great for hard-core fans but it's an ineffective substitute for the casual/new fan. When a dedicated fan watches the FN live, their experience is strongly colored by past experience at live events. That experience serves as a proxy for the real excitement at a live event. Even so -- many (most) of us go to chat rooms or DCP or gather together in live settings to add just a little of the social aspect of live attendance. *We* think FN is awesome but only because we all can draw upon past live shows to "fill in" much of the experience. The casual / new fan has litte to no such experience to draw upon. Watching FN without having experienced a live event is most likely *not* a very rewarding experience. I remember the first time I saw winterguard shows on video, I was less than impressed. My view changed substantially after going to Dayton :-) If you're interested in shrinking the fan base, then having only large shows plus the FN is a great recipe. If you're interested in building the fan base, then having as many shows as possible (to maximize direct experience with the product) would seem to be the best strategy.

  20. Shenandoah Sound-the only drum corps in Virginia-will kick off its 2012 performance season with an appearance at the Alexandria St. Patrick's Day Parade TOMORROW, March 3. The corps has been participating in this parade for years and the members are excited to perform. If you're at the parade, you'll see a "lite" version of the corps because most of our HS members have all-district/region events this weekend. We still have openings in brass, pit, and guard. Visit www.ShenandoahSound.org or Facebook.com/shenandoahsound for more information!

  21. Not sure how I feel about this. Beautiful name ... but it makes me wish there was a secret fifth piece ... "Music of the Night" as they did in '89 ... one of the best things they've ever played! I hope they are secretly planning on pulling that out midseason or later as a final push to the end of the show. That'd be AMAZING!!!! Babies would be thrown!

  22. You think corps don't make profits? Do you understand how 501c3 works? You're right. Today's drum corps teach kids nothing. I learned NOTHING about playing music or, you know, life. Totally. They did teach me how to spend thousands of dollars to line the pockets of those evil overlord administrators, though! Real maniacal sorts who love their corps enough to know how to NOT KILL THEM OFF.

  23. Rather than posting placings for each corps at a point when very little has been seen or heard from many corps, I'll give some thoughts on who I think the top 12 will be (corps I am more familiar with, sorry to 13-25, I feel I would not have enough to say on your programs). In alphabetical order: The Academy - This corps has been improving so much in recent years, and when I saw them in Allentown this past year, I was very impressed with what I was hearing/seeing. It's always nice to see a fresh face in the top 12, and The Academy seems to really want it. Blue Devils - Consistently and technically great. I personally enjoyed 2011 over 2010 from them, but the execution is always there. They will be great no matter if the show is "liked" by many or few. However, I think I will appreciate their show more this year after realizing just how high of a performance level this corps can get from the members. Blue Stars - I think the Blue Stars are going to surprise many this year. With some of the changes, including the addition of Myron Rosander, and after last year, I think they will be working harder than ever. I see them rising this year. Blue Knights - The Blue Knights will be entertaining this year. Last year's show was pretty fun, and I don't think they will change much from that. That being said, I could see them losing a little momentum to some of the corps around them. Bluecoats - With "Creep" last year being one of my favorite moments on the field, I would love to see another Bluecoats show with that kind of energy and emotion throughout an entire show. staff changes could affect them a bit, but we will see. Boston Crusaders - Great corps. The video sounds pretty decent for this time of the year, but I can't help myself from comparing them to Star. They have pretty immense shoes to attempt to fill with their arrangement sounding very similar to Star's, yet different at times. But obviously this is not 1991, so it's all on them how well they do this year. I just hope for a ballad that involves the entire corps. Just my preference. The Cadets - I personally would get tired of playing Christmas music if I were marching with The Cadets. That's not saying the product won't be great, but there's only so much of that music I can take. I think they will still be fighting for top spots, but I don't see them taking it all again with this show. Carolina Crown - Fantastic brass is always what comes to mind with Crown. I can't wait to hear what they have in store for this year. It would be nice to see them medal again, but with a show that doesn't try so hard to sell its story. The Cavaliers - I never really know what to expect from the Cavaliers other than it will be a product that is fun to watch. With Michael Gaines gone, I hope they can maintain their visual identity. I also hope for a show that doesn't have such a "far-out" theme this year. It seemed like they were trying a little too hard with 2011's show design. Madison Scouts - There's been enough hype on Madison this year, I don't think I will add to it. I think they will be working just as hard as they have been the past few years, and possibly rise in the rankings. Phantom Regiment - My personal opinion on last year's show was that the drill was far too easy for a drum corps. Obviously back in the day drill was easier, but in the current times, that drill just didn't cut it for me. They play emotionally, so I hope they continue to do so. I could see them either staying where they are or dropping. No real basis for it, just my opinion. Santa Clara Vanguard - Well, I am glad to see some repertoire that isn't completely "out there" but that doesn't mean it cannot be arranged in a strange way. But with their staff changes, I see them making many changes for the better, and will likely rise. I was not impressed with their brass last year, or the year before, so I see no way but up for them, as far as brass goes. Again, not very much "meat" to what I am saying, but I am very excited to see what is in store this year from all the corps.

  24. I definitely did not see that! Wow, great article on them. Is it bad that I always associate the guard girl who gets a closeup as "McKenzie"? And to stay on topic, I would like to add the end of Star of Indiana 1991 as one of those "moments". Surprised it hasn't shown up yet, but nonetheless... Cross to cross... That show is also one of my favorites (wish I had seen it live, but if I had I wouldn't have remembered seeing it!)

  25. Santa Clara Vanguard 1999 That entire show just keeps progressing, and never gets boring to me. I can listen to that show on repeat for the rest of my life and never get bored of it. Honestly. Not a dull moment in that show, and it has many "moments" on top of it.

  28. Despite how this poster phrased his skepticism, there *is* a point here. There have been plenty of discussions about (a) Myron Rosander's drill being very cool but very difficult to get clean (b) Michael Shapiro's guard work being just crazy ridonkulous hard -- again with implications to getting clean. I guess my point would be these tendencies are well known to the rest of the Blue Stars design team and they certainly have the opportunity to take them into account. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Mr. Rosander's drill on the field again and for some reason I think he's gonna be a good fit at the Stars.

  31. Pretty much not possible with the current scoring system. Look at it this way: Blue Devils won in 2010 with the 4th place drumline and were barely 2nd in 2008 with the 5th place drumline. In fact, if you switch 2010 percussion scores between the Blue Devils and the Glassmen so that the Blue Devils scored 17.1 with a 12th place drumline, they would STILL have won the 2010 DCI Title with a total score of 97.90 Well...you're making the (unlikely) assumption that said drumline woes would not impact the rest of the captions. IF a drumline tanks it's gonna take a lot more than their own caption down with them. As for the original prediction -- well it's bold :-)

  32. I agree, I would love to see them get a new drill writer(not that Kevin Ford is doing them a disservice, but to get a change in drill design for them), and have a visual staff that will push them to the next level. Their playing has been fine, now all they need is a more refined visual and great things could happen. I also don't know much about the two guys, but as far as I can tell they seem like good choices. Oh, I also hope last year helped them learn that props might not always be the best route to choose (not to say that they never work, but certain aspects of props do not).
    -1 points
  33. Just props in general. I really hope the props on a massive level are not something that continues to be a part of the Blue Stars shows.
    -1 points
  34. With most of the main staff at Blue Stars returning in some sorts or another (including Sullivan from caption head/arranger to solely arranger) it looks like they are keeping certain aspects consistent for next year. Thoughts?
    -1 points
  35. Should be interesting. With Rosander's inability to properly stage the guard and Shapiro's tendency to over write the Blue Stars seem to have created a visual Frankenstein's monster. Wait, that might be their 2012 production.......dark, brooding and plenty of opportunity or props.

  44. Dear Triple Forte, Sorry for the delay in response. I recently found your note among some others under my ring box. I’d been meaning to read it for several years, but kept getting sidetracked with “new” ideas and arrangements. Concerning your request to return to “hard hitting jazz shows”, as fortune would have it I am currently working on an “Oldies Show” which I’m sure you will love. It brings back all the old BD favorites (I won’t list here…as they are trotted out pretty regularly in DCP reminiscing). The visuals (although I know they’re not important) will revisit other wonderful memories such as….complete musical phrases, the phone, writing with a pen, TV on a TV, batons, garage bands, pleats, maps and marching xylophones. Again, my most sincere apology for the delay, next time I’ll put your note under my Ott’s….oh, that won’t work either! Keep those good ideas coming! WD

  46. Hey guys been on a little hiatus lately as my Daughter who is now almost 4 months has been keeping me busy? So what things are u most fired up to see or do for 2012 drum corps season?? My top 5... 1) Take my daughter/future Blue Knight to her first show!! 2) See if anyone new will move in or out of top 12... 12th has been different corps for a while and the 12th place corps from prior years has tended to drop from finals replaced by new blood so to speak. 3) Will Madison, Boston and BK continue to move up... Do they start to beat some of the top 6? 4) Can Cadets repeat and will the 12/25 show feel disappointing ala the Red Violen following Phantoms masterpiece Sparticus? 5) Will Crown get over the hump and win... Will they be a title contender at all?? Just my questions and what I'm excited to see answered for 2012! Wesley P BK 97 98
