  1. Sigh... Why must it always be so negative? I gladly laid my money down for the chance to see my son for the first time in 4 weeks, dirty or not.

  2. Seems like Blue Devils didn't get the memo about being more fan-friendly and accessible with their show... I used to be the biggest Blue Devils fan, back when I first became acquainted with them in the mid-80s, when they would just play shows consisting solely of straight-up jazz - seems like the days of "Channel One Suite" are LONG gone. One shouldn't need a PhD in modern art or literature to enjoy a drum corps show. To be fair, it's more of a widespread issue than just the Blue Devils. Somewhere along the line, drum corps became so engrossed with the concept of themed shows that the wheels just about completely fell off the product. Don't get me wrong - the talent level has continued to rise every year as the performances get better and better, however the shows themselves seemed to have gone off the deep end. If you need any proof, you need to look no further than why there was a need to bring Michael Cesario in and create the position for him that DCI did. Last year seemed to get slightly better in terms of accessible shows, but now one year removed, it almost looks like some corps did this just because they were "forced" to, and this year they're back to the same old, same old. Flame away...

  3. Their description of the show is very poorly written. It feels like someones freshmen college paper where they try to use all big words in order to get a simple point across.

  4. Will there be playing and marching simultaneously, or is that concept too base for the scope of the designers?

  5. Honestly, Lance. The H-word is tired. People are allowed to not like a particular corps for whatever reason. They're also allowed to express their dislike on an internet forum. You can disagree with them, debate them, whatever. But resorting right to "hate" when there's nothing even close to that in this thread only continues to devalue the word.

  6. I decided not to read any of the post in this topic. After last years show I thought BD was heading in a better direction. By looking at the show description and rep I'm picturing another bit's and Pieces show of follow the leader, tight rope walking, chairs, mirrors, poles, park and blow moments while playing difficult runs. In a nut shell: another cut and paste production that will compete for the title.

  9. I will echo what a couple of folks out here have already stated.....the 'Hate' thing....yeah...it's old and predictable.....from the same select group of people. I asked ya last year (fairly nicely) to drop usage of the 'hate' and 'haters' thing....but you seem to like bringing it up....again and again (Probably like the attention). As a quote 'Forum Support Team' member....I would think you would try to be a little more responsible. As for BD's 2012 show....I will wait to see and hear before making a judgement.....

  10. My name is Brian Kackley, I am the brass caption head with Music City Drum and Bugle Corps and am an alumnus of The Madison Scouts. I'm stating my name and title because I choose not to hide behind my screen name. Personal opinion of performance quality and the equipment used has been in debate since the inception of this activity. I too have my own likes and dislikes and very strong opinions towards one instrument manufactor or another. Being a charter caption head at a very young and developing drum corps, I owe a debt of gratitude to Jupiter. Have I had issues with the instruments? Of course. To Jupiters credit, they have remedied every single concern that I have brought to their attention and have done so without hesitation. This will be Music City's second season on Jupiters and I am pleased with their efforts and work that they have put into supporting our concerns. The bigger picture on this subject is that there are companies out there willing to help thousands of kids receive an education from this activity that they won't get anywhere else. They provide the tools for these young people to create the sounds that we all enjoy listening to. I'm very thankful to Jupiter because I get to stand in front of a brass line that puts a smile on my face every second of the day. I understand the companies growing pains. It's not easy to build something. Down the road when you get the results you strive for, you appreciate what you have and what helped you get there. It's like I tell the hornline. Succeed through your failures. That's how you will build character and excellence.

  12. meh. I think you're really reaching trying to save your point. The whole argument you're making here is that art is often reactionary and a product of it's time. Nothing earthshaking there. But the parallel you made earlier pretty much still falls flat on it's face if only for a single reason -- dada wasn't "art". It was "un-art". Anyway I'm curious to see the show. and yes -- actual real butter please and some yummy grade b maple syrup !! none of that clear, flavorless crap for me.

  14. Well, by my avatar, you probably know what I think of Bill. (By the way, I was in Bloomington last week and had my first chance to visit his resting place, a regular mausoleum.) Bill will probably show up in a future video. It's no slight...there's just so many people and corps to get in one video. Plus, at Bill's memorial service/concert, I sat next to the father of the video's creator, so there's no slight intended, I'm sure. I'm personally hoping to nominate him to the DCI Hall of Fame. There are so many things he did for DCI that most people have never heard about. Despite his wacky costumes picking up on the theme of Star of Indiana's shows, he was way too low-keyed to tell people about what he was doing behind the scenes. I'm convinced his contributions, including those of manpower, helped DCI through some tough times. I still have trouble thinking of him being gone.

  17. People quitting because they can't pay, and being forced to quit because they can't pay are two different things. Just saying. Maybe give your members more advice on how to raise the funds instead of just giving the boot. And I don't think money was the reason why certain people quit.

  18. I can't speak for others, but I'll speak for myself. It has absolutely nothing to do with being at the top but has everything to do with my disappointment about no longer being entertained by a corps that used to entertain me a great deal. For what it's worth, I enjoyed last year's show quite a bit. And worth noting that "be excellent to each other," while great advice, does not describe a significant portion of your posting history here.

  19. You seem to have an in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of the BD staff- member mind. I question whether they discount their history to the extent you suggest. So, they ignore '96, when people threw babies during the show? They don't care what the fans think? It's not important to them in the least, as long as they "advance" the activity? What does that avant-gard attitude portray of drum corps to the average marching band viewer who, apparently, is the target as the future of the activity? I'm not going to Indy to see "P-iss Christ". I think BD cares about that fact.

  20. Last year's Phantom Regiment ended the show with Juliets death by sword. We knew it was coming - but was best suited for the very last performance. Same way with the Drum Major/Head Military Guy's death at Finals for Sparticus in 2008. IMO, a corps needs to save one 'ace in the hole' for that final performance, as it just might put them over the top!

  24. Be careful with showing Rach Star in the classroom. As silly as it sounds I don't think I'd want an administrator walking in on a close up of the colorguard members from that show. Don't think you'd be in trouble over it, but it's a hassle you can avoid by showing a different show.

  27. Well, the smart thing to do here, imo. is for the BD staff designers to make this as nonsenical, grating and as bad as possible. They can't take chances here with this. The show will need to convey total chaos in order to win another DCI Title, imo. The biggest fear I have for BD is that this show might have too much sense and intellect to it. The brilliance here is that in order to win it must be totally nonsensical to everyone... but most importantly, to the judges. They need to feel totally confused at the end of this show. From my perspective, BD has set a high bar for themselves with this show. But I think they have the talent and the staff to make this show very " intentionally bad " come Finals.... and thereby win another DCI Title.

  28. For filler, you could show a DCI Highlights clip too if you can get access to it. It might keep newbies attention better too, imo. The highlights clips seem to have less " down time " and shows the full panorama of emotion better in my opinion that the entire, longer drawn out full shows of the Corps. I'd do a few full shows, but I 'd definately show a Highlights Clip from one of the years or a couple of the years as a supplement to this.

  37. Generally I agree, but in the case of drum corps, I think brass and percussion are the way to go. It's so rewarding when one can force one's self to produce a great product within the constraints of the DC idiom. Leave the other stuff for marching band.

  38. Well, I haven't visited their camps, so I haven't been keeping track of their attendance. I've got camps of my own to worry about. I told you why I wrote what I did. I'm not waiting for the C2 administration to post anything here, I'm just not speaking for anyone else, either. I hope you can understand that.

  40. I think, and have said, that the true future in the marching arts is in the indoor realm. 1. Indoor drumlines and guards are similar to performance art we are used to seeing. (Blast, dance concerts/contests, stomp, performance theaters, troupes). 2. Indoor units are farther removed from marching band. The farther they are from the crappy marching bands that people associate with the word "marching band" the more successful they can become. 3. There are less performers. Less performers, less egos, less issues abound. It is way easier to schedule rehearsals outside of class times with 30 people (as compared to 100-300). 4. The environment is more controlled. Sure, gyms can be acoustical nightmares, but they all have electricity, the same sized floors, and a roof to prevent electronics issues. 5. The activity is younger and less bound to old school standards. In a dog eat dog world, the faster you evolve, the faster you can grow. Drum Corps is dying because curmudgeons like me try to hold one foot back, while putting one foot forward. 6. It costs WAY LESS to put together an indoor group than a drum corps. 7. It is circuit based. This cuts way down on travel costs for the group, and also helps keep the groups more community oriented (which is what made drum corps awesome in the golden era).

  41. I confess I've not been to an indoor percussion event since I competed in the first big one in Dallas in 1982 at the PAS convention. That was held in the theater in the Anatole Hotel. I really must go to see how they have made drums sound good in a gymnasium.

  44. And it just got one more negative from me. With it being that accurate, it tells me that this person had insider knowledge of the show that the corps was not ready to share yet and he violated their trust by sharing it on DCP. Corps hide what they're playing for a reason. We need to learn to respect that. I am willing to bet that most times, they hold off announcing until they've secured all the rights they need to secure. No point in getting people's hopes up with a certain piece if they end up losing the rights to perform/arrange.

  45. Every year? Really? IIRC, last year they announced the show title and one of the pieces (the Ligeti piano etude) and filled in the rest of the repertoire later. Prior to that, they've been among the most straightforward about just announcing the theme and repertoire with a minimum of puffery in the announcement. I would think someone like you would be ecstatic that they're bringing something out of the SCV vault for 2012 (um, if that's what they're really doing, I mean. Forget I said anything. These aren't the droids you're looking for).
