  5. (Not sure where a topic like this would go, so feel free to move if necessary.) I took some time to educate myself on the proper musical terminology in spanish. But, as always, information like this is more useful when shared Oddly enough this all started when I was trying to explain Drum Corps to some of my family members that don't speak English. And although the title "Drum & Bugle Corps" is American, it can still be translated. But that brought me to wonder how I could explain any other music terminology to someone that speaks a different language. 6. It means a lot to me as a fan. You know what really grinds my gears? Corps that don't have the full show on the field after a months worth of everydays. 4 weeks of 15-16 hours a day should get you a show on the field. Best of luck to Phantom on their West Coast swing.

  7. From a design standpoint, nearly all the BOA finalists had better programs than all but a handful of DCI corps. Not better performed. Not more entertaining. Not better execution. But better programs.

  9. The reason " why Drum Corps don't release more stuff during the offseason ".... is because the Corps Directors are concerned about the possibility of someone on DCP saying something critical about it " ? The Cadets last offseason released early in the Winter that they'd be a uniform change with marchers so that it would more appropriately fit the theme in their view.. With that announcement, we had 52 pages of thread discussion on DCP where 90% of posters bemoaned the fact that the uniform " abandonment " ( as one poster angrily called it ) was almost an act of defiant sacrilege to the time honored classic uniform. Even a few Cadets Alums chimed in and expressed their outrage. Undaunted, The Cadets proceeded to play frequent video clips of their camps... early and often. Later in April they played a full run through of their music for the upcoming season. Now, what was the final net result of the release of early info last season by the Cadets ? None. No effect whatsoever. They won the DCI Championship. They had a wonderful show and got a great hand at Finals for their well deserved Title. What criticisms did we hear on DCP after July regarding the uniform change by the Cadets ? None. Not a single criticism anywhere once the season began. What did The Cadets learn about the release of offseason info to fans ? Well, they probably learned that the release of info has no bearing whatsoever on placements, nor on how the show will be received by fans and judges alike, when it really matters... at Championships. Did The Cadets clamp down on offseson info to fans in this offseason ? No. What did we learn as fans the last 24 months regarding the release of offseason info from Corps ? Well, we learned that such release ultimately has no effect on placements nor on how the show will be received by fans come August when it really matters. We also learned that regretably most Corps do not follow The Cadets model of early and often communication with fans in the offseason with video clips of camps, info on the theme, and so forth. We also learned that no justifiable reason has been put forth by the other Corps as to why there is a black out of show music video clips... of more than 10 seconds of duration...in the offseason given that even if there might be some criticism of such videos or info in the offseason, in the end, it doesn't mean a thing. Nobody remembers the thread on DCP in the offseason on the Cadets announcement that they'd be a change in their uniform for 2011. By August, it all made sense. Kudos to The Cadets for understanding the importance of keeping fans involved, interested, informed on the goings on with their Corps in the offseason. When it comes to buying sovies at shows in 2012, I'll remember those few Corps that took the time to play us some music from camps. As for the others ? I'll take the same approach they took with me in the offseason when I never saw them. They won't see me either around their sovie truck and table this summer.

  10. Just got back from spending 4 days in Johnston with the Cadets. I hesitated about sharing my observations because of the negativity I will receive from some, however, I know there are some out there that appreciate updates. Anyhow, the Cadets are in pretty good shape and they are actually sounding better than this time last year. I know there are some that are expecting to dislike this show...I really think you are going to be suprised. The first 5 minutes of the show is the strongest production I have seen from this corps in several years! The marching program is stepped up a notch from last year & the brass line is a wall of sound! The percussion section is having some performance issues at this point but they have a ton of potential. The guard seems to have a very talented group and they should be at a higher level than last year. Not sure how the Cadets will place this year, however, I was excited about what's going on in Cadet land. They have an extremely talented and focused group and I see more potential for this show than last years.

  11. Apparently some people are just never happy unless they're unhappy and complaining about something. I think this is great for DCI. Maybe it won't reach new fans, maybe it will. We have no idea until it happens. They could run a big ad campaign, and bring lots of new people in. Just wait and see what happens. And please, try and enjoy the season. It starts in about 11 days As Boo said multiple times, something is better than nothing. With everyone complaining about how the activity is shrinking, isn't it good that they're at least trying to do something to help grow the activity?

  14. You know? I was the last doof who started a thread like this and since then I've done some homework and came to the following conclusion. Broken Arrow and The Colts both had the same hit in their show in 2011 from Swan Lake and...well...here... Check out Broken Arrow's hit at 3:54... Then check out The Colts hit at :53 ... I mean, you can't get a more direct comparison than that. The 2011 BOA National Champion and the 2011 DCI 16th Place Semifinalist doing the exact same hit in almost the exact same manner. And clearly.....THE COLTS WIN! Just listen to the fullness of The Colts sound in comparison to the holes that are in Broken Arrow's sound. Broken Arrow is GREAT (my favorite BOA show EVER)...but the obvious is still the obvious. And this was only mid July for the Colts at a rehearsal out of uniform...and it's still obvious. Case Settled!

  15. The current side-of-field/parade drum major for the Govies is about 64. He says his arms are starting to go to hell. I said so are mine. but the real "old timer" of the midwest goes out to Frank from MBI who marched sop till he was 114. BTW, just saw Frank at Morristown, he looked good and promised to come march with the Govies.......again

  22. My guess is that when I watched Academy (AZ) last summer at Finals I believe they would have handily won BOA Grand Nationals. One reason people are not so likely to get into this debate is because there are big differences in structure and purpose. A drum corps rehearses when there are no scholastic restraints. When the members report to spring training, the drum corps have them for 30 days. The kids are not in class, they do nothing but music and marching for 12 to 15 hours per day. When they embark on tour there are no distractions. Just music and marching. No science, math, history, no sports, no after-school projects, no social life (well, they have a little of that on tour), no part-time jobs, etc. Drum corps is very specialized and focused. This is both good and bad. The good is that the product is going to be awesome once cleaned. From the mini-camps, to spring training, to the 2-month tour, these corps take 12.5 minutes of music and drill and perfect it (plus some other tunes for parades and stand-still concerts). The visual content of the top 15 to 17 DCI corps is on another level from that of high-school band, even BOA. Physically, the kids in drum corps just have more time to condition, and musically they become more competent at those 12.5 minutes of music because of the focus that they can give. The bad is that sometimes, and with some individuals, they can easily mistake their 12.5 minutes of greatness for an all-around greatness at music making. In reality, the musician that can play 2 hours of material at a professional level and learn it in one week of rehearsals is a better musician, and their training is more practical in the real world. A good orchestral musician might go to a 10-week summer camp and play 10 concerts, each with 2 hours of material. They will have learned 20 hours of music and will have done so at a super high level. Yes, this is training typical for music majors who really wish to play professionally, but I offer the example as a high barometer in order to put things into perspective. The job of a public school band program is to educate musicians in a diverse manner, offering many types of music styles, genres, and ensembles. In public school students should have an opportunity to do concert band, symphonic band, jazz band, marching band, chamber ensembles, rock/pop groups, electronic music, folk, and more. The job is to give a well-rounded education. Some high-school program do not do this. They beat competitive marching band at a time when kids also have classes, jobs, family obligations, and social lives. I believe it can be a bit dangerous, but even when done well I think you can see that the focus and specialization just isn't there when compared to drum corps. Each venue really serves a different purpose, whether it be the drum corps, the BOA/competitive HS band, college band, or the summer orchestral institute. It's really a matter of knowing what makes each venue unique and worthwhile.

  23. As one of Shaun Canon's assistants, I just thought I'd let you know a little more about Shaun Canon and why he did this music video for DCI, and why he's volunteered to perform at the National Championship this August. I saw a few people on here criticizing Shaun, which was upsetting considering how much he's doing to help raise support for DCI and music programs. Whether you like his music or not, if you support music programs, you should at least respect the fact that Shaun Canon is working tirelessly in Hollywood to raise support for these programs. He's already PERSONALLY donated $100,000 to music programs, out of his own pocket. I volunteered to help Shaun Canon because of how passionate he is for the cause he's pushing. Not only is he one of the most talented Jazz Pianists I've ever seen (I'm a big fan of Dave Brubeck, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall and others, and Shaun Canon can hold his own against these), he's also one of the most genuine people I've seen in the music business. You need to see him perform LIVE to see just how accomplished of a pianist this guy is. Yes, Shaun was on American Idol, but that's one of his smaller accomplishments. His previous world tour was a huge success, he's won some of the most prestigious songwriting contests, he's an award winning TV producer, he's written theme songs for Epic Games, Pepsi and others. He's also performed with Janelle Monae, Brian McKnight, Johnny Lang and has received high acclaim from Celine Dion, Norah Jones and others. Many of us here in Hollywood consider him the next Sting, but that's just our opinion, of course. "Live for Music" is Shaun's most poppy song, and it's not my personal favorite of his, but he's targetting young teens with this song, and they LOVE it! My personal favorites of Shaun's are: "You're All My Reasons" and "Hop, Skip and a Jump". Once you hear these songs, you might change your opinion of Shaun Canon. Click here to listen to those songs: Song Link PS. You should remember that this is a public forum. All your criticism can be seen by Shaun Canon's fans who don't know what Drum Corps is, and all they see is you bagging on an artist who just released a music video that's all about giving props to DCI. This reflects poorly on drum corps, so kKeep that in mind when you're posting on here...

Yum...waffles. (You never clarified why they desire to kill each other. Can't we all just get along?) Waffles: Promoting peace and understanding since 1572.

  25. Wow! I was at the Sat. runthru, and if that was low energy, then this show is really going to blow people away. Fanfare for the Common Man is everything you would expect it to be. I kinda figured it would play a part in the "pre-show" music, and it does, along with a nice bit of foreshadowing from the mellos. The opening statement really gets your attention as the corps moves into some very intricate, fast moving drill. In fact, throughout, the opener, there are multiple spots where you would think you were watching the frenetic END of a Cadets or Cavaliers show, except, it doesn't feel derived. Some stuff that you think "Wow!, I don't think I've seen THAT before." The really cool thing is that the music is just as impressive! Runs and multiple tongueing galore (thru all instrument groups). Classic "Crown" impact moments. Solo/small ensemble stuff that is very exposed and very demanding. Music and drill are both a definite step up from anything I've seen from Crown. If they get this puppy clean, watch out! Now what I saw didn't have any of the guard that particular night, and I am sure they will play a big part in some of the more "ethereal" moments that lead up to the full playing of FftCM. Really cool effects with the Bass Drums and Timpani. Video won't do it justice. You've got to see it in person to fully get the effect. I feel pretty confident that this will be one of THE moments of the summer! Nothing fancy, just great brass playing that builds, and builds, and builds and then finally pays off with what you KNOW is coming. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the end of this thing looks like. I strongly encourage anyone who is able to come over to Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs NC on Sunday night for the Dress run-thru. Gates open at 7:00.

  26. Al has been on the DCI tour in years past, working with Crossmen, so he's been around, but very busy. As for the Letterman Band, those performers have other things going on during the weekends. The various Blue Man Group ensembles have scheduled gigs in their various theaters. I don't know Chad Sexton's schedule. Anyhow, you ask, "If this is such a wonderful idea, [why hasn't it happened before]? Why is that important? It's happening now, and for that we should be grateful. By that logic, any breakthrough or discovery could have been met with the criticism that if it was a great idea, why didn't it happen before? If "American Idol" was such a great idea, how come the networks didn't have something like that before Simon Cowell came along? If seatbelts are such a great idea, why weren't they required before the late 1960s? What about airbags? Not required until the 1990s. The thing is; the implementation of all good ideas happens for the first time at some point. What the heck difference does it make if it hasn't happened before if it's happening now? Must a good idea that is new be challenged just because someone didn't think of doing it earlier, or wasn't able to pull it off before? We had 3-valve brass instruments available to us for decades before they were legalized. If they were such a good idea, why didn't drum corps use them in the 1940s? As for your assertion that certain entertainers would be more of a draw or endorsement, should we not take advantage of someone who has a passion for music education and who is excited to help out just because we can't get Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga together with Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder? Maybe we should bother filming Finals with a high camera because we can't fit the Goodyear Blimp inside Lucas Oil Stadium? Bottom line: Something is better than nothing and it's counter-productive to criticize being handed a canteen of tap water when starving of thirst in the desert because Perrier is more to one's liking.

  29. I’m a big fan of Deadspins ‘Funbag’ column, where these sort of hypothetical situations are discussed. A similar idea entered my mind recently: Imagine two able-bodied drum corps vets are deserted on a jungle island. Both are 4-year-vets, both are proficient in martial arts, and both are given a backpack of the usual survival supplies (first-aid, fire gear, etc.). Along with their respective backpacks, one is given a pair of 20” Zildjian marching cymbals and the other is given a Yamaha Bb contra* …. Let’s say, both competitors have marching experience on each instrument. The rules are simple: fight to the death. The only thing that can cause damage to your enemy is your instrument. This fight is controlled by omnipresent game-makers (yes, like in ‘Hunger Games’), so any cheating will result in immediate disqualification/death. Who would win? Note: I didn’t include other equipment (sop, snare w/ sticks, rifle) for various reasons. Guard equipment is derived from weaponry, so that would be too much of an advantage. Battery drums are too cumbersome. Other brass instruments are too small to be effective. *I’m not calling it a ‘tuba.’ If it’s in the key of G OR if it’s an instrument of death, it’s a ‘contra.’

  30. Think 311 is cheap? and you're offering a discount to boot on prices? And Stu, for an organization that is just now learning to get out there and trying to market beyond their very small niche, you have to be smart and safe at the same time. DCI doesn't have an endless marketing budget. One wrong move could #### up the organization for years. I'm in sales, and I have done marketing. yes, sometimes it is smart to crawl before you gallop if you don't have a lot of experience. You blasted Daniel for many of his ideas that didn't have a sure fire success rate...well galloping into something like this has just as much potential to blow up too. Shaun Cannon is a good starting place for DCI. They can see if it works, and possibly what pieces of it didn't work and tweak them. I'd rather maybe DCi moved a little slower now so there IS a long run. For every business that hit it big with that one great idea, there's a million more that thought they had that sure fire idea...and aren't in business anymore.

  34. I haven't been keeping up with the commentary around this, so I don't know what all reasons folks have. I love the musical concept and I expect it to sound great. So long as they can keep voice-overs, movie sound clips, amplified singing, or goofy central characters out of the mix, I expect to love it. Or, is this going to be a narrated story about how Santa Claus gets lost in the Zone and gets rescued by a goofy baby Jesus just in time to save Christmas for the family from the 2008 show?

  35. I'll be surprsied if they come out of the gate as strongly as they did last year. I know their percussion section is young, the same might be true of the hornline; though, I've read that the hornline is still playing with a lot of confidence and volume. I believe the guard has a lot of vets and could very well be better than last year, if the program allows for it. From what I've read, the corps is fitter than previous, so that could bode well. Still not sure how the program will come together, though they are advertising the middle piece (Jingle) to be a real production, especially in the guard. If the first (Carol) is also very strong, then maybe our programmatic fears might be unfounded.

Heard some show music in there as well....very nice...thank you SOA The not so great....(you knew this was coming ) And just to save time...this is not directed at the corps members of SOA.... No mention at all that SOA (And the groups they compete against) spend the summer performing before thousands and thousands of drum corps fans. All of this mention of practice, artistic expression and performance levels...I guess we get a glimpse of what a corps priorities are. Doctor of this and doctor of that....how about some simple communication regarding the great (never to be forgotten) experience members will have performing for thousands and thousands of fans. I guess fans is a four letter word these days. Just trying to keep it real....

  40. In the years I have housed kids I have personally seen 4 kids quit. The biggest shock in 1999 scared me to death. When we got up in the morning he wasn't here, talk about panic, fortunately, I was able to find on the computer he had taken a cab to the bus terminal. After that experience I made it abundantly clear if anyone planned to leave to tell me first and I would make sure they got to wherever they wanted to go. The next dropped out in 2009, he was 16-years-old and was in way over his head, he wasn’t mature enough to handle the pressure. Last year I had 2 leave after the 2nd day. Three had come together from a small high school in OK, as a buddy thing. It was 90*, they came after their graduation and had to catch up. The girl, come to find out, had a boyfriend she decided she couldn’t live without. The second boy literally got talked into leaving with her, he told BK he couldn't handle it, and the third came close. The boy that stayed is like family to me now and is welcomed every year. The boy that left called a week later saying he had made the biggest mistake of his life, in drum corps you don’t get a chance to come and go. At least I don’t believe most corps allow it. Holes have to be filled. In 2001 the Blue Knights had lost one of their horn players due to injury. A kid had come to his little- I’m talking K-12-high school-(in Iowa, I think), to watch them practice. He said he wished he could do that someday, be careful what you wish for, the kid was on the bus the next day. He loved it!

  41. I just wanted to make sure I understand what you're thinking: * You think that non-drum corps fans will see this American Idol guy as a "featured guest" for DCI Finals. * You then think these non-drum corps fans will do research to get tickets to come see this guy. * They will then find that the only way to buy tickets is through Drum Corps International, and will then quickly learn that the event is NOT a 'American Idol Guy' concert, but instead Drum Corps International Finals, with 'American Idol Guy' singing at some point. * You are then stipulating that these people will blindly purchased kinda high-priced tickets (or, I guess, the cheaper ones; but none of them are really that cheap) for the event, see that it starts early evening, see that there is an explicit schedule including an opening ceremony, 12 drum corps, and a finale, show up to the event STILL EXPECTING 'American Idol Guy' concert, and then complain. Let's be real: you're complaining over nothing, and your assertions are silly at best, likely unrealistic. I know this is the internet, land of pointless complaining and all, but really?!
