  1. Steam powered things take a little longer to get going, but then it's hard to make it stop. It's only the third show. GO TROOOOOOP!!!!

  3. Crown tore it up! Lots of changes. Cubes featured more. No boing sound in drum feature (not sure of this was a mistake or not...I kinda miss it!). Drill much cleaner, but still plenty to clean! Uniform change popped live and cubes seemed much more reflective and visible. White flags have gold now. Fanfare is special. Great crowd tonight. Responded very enthusiastically to this show. Great job Crown!!!

  4. Taught two people performing tonight this semester: My son, and Shelby Blezinger who plays snare for Phantom. They started together in Spirit in '08. Two better kids cannot be found, I'm proud of both of them.

  5. True Randy. As for me, I like electronics as a condiment but here it is a "co-star". Nice Closing Set!

  6. I realize this is, in the words of Paul Simon, "The age of lasers in the jungle, lasers in the jungle somewhere..." But I am still amazed that I can watch my kid 2k plus miles away on my high definition tv and nice stereo system here in my living room. We live in an amazing time.

  7. Holy Crap! The Scouts scored higher in brass than the Bluecoats! Not by much but that is such a good sign! I can't wait to see this show!

  9. What was the design team thinking? Innovation is one thing, complete alienation of most of the audience is another. Wow, I am still in shock over that show. How can they go from last year's British Classic's show, which I thought a bit old school but thoroughly entertaining, to this program? Woah! Really, I can't believe it.

  17. Tales of Cavies demise greatly exaggerated. They looked and sounded great! Really, I think they're gonna be in it at the end. Percussion was phenomenal.

  18. Everyone knows the West Coast is all about how the show makes you feeeeellllll and how emotionally abstract it is. In the East it's all about where is your foot is placed, or how straight lines can be =)

  20. My two cents... IMO the drumline is noticably stronger and seems more mature than last year Drill seems more demanding than the past two years Brass - I've seem them twice and gotten two completely different reads. In the Whitewater dress rehearsal I heard a few intonation and endurance issues. Last night they sounded much better and these boys are Madison loud! As others have said, some impact moments could use some tweaking. Great Gates/company front move from 95 in the closer is going to be a highlight of 2012 IMHO

  21. I really don't see what the big whup is about this. Won't C2 just make DCA stronger and more diverse? If you want "back in the day"--there are alumni corps. Why can't ANY DCA corps have its own policies on age? How does this affect the spectators' enjoyment? I just wish C2 were at Champs in Beepo. Harrumph.

  23. So I was at the rehearsal today in Diamond Bar, CA! Man, they are amazing for this time in the season. It's always an absolute pleasure being able to go to a PR rehearsal. Seeing the work ethic of these kids and the pure passion and dedication that they have for what they do is awesome. Nessun Dorma was a beaut! The drum break and tuba feature make me smile as well! :) My friend and I also made a bunch of brownies for the entire corps; it was nice to see members walking by us and saying "Hey thanks for the brownies! They were awesome!" Aww Phantom Regiment, such a bunch of cuties. ;)

  24. Quick thoughts, I"ll post up a full review in the morning, along with pictures BDC- these guys are always fun to watch, because they always have good, fun shows, and you have to enjoy watching a bunch of little kids march SCVC- I like the new uniforms, except for the stripes on the arms, a little too "BD" there. The show was cool, it played a lot like a "Greatest Hits" show for SCV fans. It had Russian Christmas Music, Great Gate of Kiev, and Wishing you Were Somehow Here again, along with Coldplay, and the theme from the TV show "Rome". A good show, I think their brass was their strongest caption tonight, but this show should grow very well over the next two months. It was their first judged show BDB- another good show from them. I felt the pacing was a little slow, and I got a little bit bored during it. The massive drums they used were awesome, I kind of want one for my house now. Their percussion and visual were better than SCVC, but I felt SCVC went for a harder visual program. There were some brass execution errors, but it was their first show, so it's easily forgiven. I think they'll challenge again for a title, but maybe not win? It's too early to tell World Class: Mandarins- the show was decent, better than I've seen from them in awhile. They seemed smaller than last year to me, but maybe that helped them out? The central guard character (the Mayan king) seemed a bit lost during the show, because they just have him walking around for the whole show. The chant section in the middle of the show was bizzare, but it got a good crowd response. The show ended right after the drum solo, so I'd like to see it once it's all done. PC- this corps is WAY better than I've ever seen from them. The hornline hit you in the face from the start, and was really strong through the entire show. Their theme was very easy to understand, and they performed it well. I could see them topping out around 15-17, but they should do well in August. I really liked this show. First complete show of the night as well SCV- the order was a little strange, but this was a huge step up from the corps before it. It was good to see them add some pre-show drill in, it looks like they still have more to put in. The show was easily the crowd favorite of the night, at least from where I was sitting. The show is still messy, but it's starting to communicate much more, I can see this one challenging for a medal once it's all said and done, but they have a lot of cleaning to do. Brass is so much improved from last year in terms of musicality and volume, and the percussion was once again spotless. You can't really argue with a Paul Rennick line. BK- I don't really know what to say about this show. I love the Firebird, it's one of my favorite pieces, but I feel that the design staff wanted to go in a different direction than any one else who had done the piece, and I think it back-fired. It just seemed like the whole show lacked direction. The pre-show seemed like a huge waste of time, especially with the awful synth sampling parts. Are robotic sounds really something you want to pair with Stravinsky? IF the show just started with the Infernal Dance, I think it would have been much better. The guard uniforms were a bright, lurid shade of green, and were just terribly distracting. I usually like BK shows, but this one was just a big miss for me. BD- I'm confused about this show. The guard uniforms to me are worse than BK's, just because I hate the bright, highlighter colors that have no comparison to the corps. The opening impact with the corps members jumping around and doing weird stuff I guess was the "Dada" portion, but after that, it really settled down. I do like their music book more than I have in the last couple of years, which is good. The visual program is much more "mainstream" drum corps than we've seen from the Blue Devils in the past. I diid enjoy it, but I came away from the ending confused, I guess would be the proper term for it. The ending just kind of happened, and no one in the crowd seemed to know what was happening. I think with some tweaking, the show will do well. Maybe not win, but it will do well. Boston- this was a big surprise for me. I knew they would be cool, because they were playing great music, but Boston really came to play. They had some great impacts, and started right out with Pines of the Appian Way, and blew people away. They had lots of good moments, I feel this show should easily stay in the Top 8. I think maybe if they switched to white plumes, it would make some of the visual look better from up above, they seemed to get a little lost with the red plumes. I really liked this show though, it was powerful and well done.

  25. Just got back from the show- GREAT night! Surprise of the night was Boston- they were incredible. I thought it was going to be tough for them to follow BD- but they did it and more! SCV had the crowd tonight- easy. They are easily going to be a crowd favorite everywhere. I like BD's show a lot this year- it's so dang unique are there are fantastic melodies throughout. BK was a little weak brass wise tonight- are they young? I like the show- but a little too much synth for me. Some VERY cool visual/artistic stuff in this show- GREAT snare line!!! The Mandarins- I don't know what the staff are thinking. WHY. I feel bad for the kids- honestly. The corwd had no idea how to react to this show- it started excellent, and then got just so "Out there" Pacific Crest- great show tonight! I'm glad this corps is out of the dark and depressing stage that they liked to be in. I'll add some pictures tomorrow before I head up to Stanford!

  26. According to The Academy director's announcement at the show, it cost them $7000 a day. He thanked the couple for their $14,000 donation! Yep! 14,000.

  28. Well, since the Dada movement rejected reason and logic, it would be quite unreasonable and most illogical for the corps to come out with a tightly structured show, out-Dada-ing Dada. It's really quite brilliant in concept. Turn Dada on its head by structuring it...the one thing a Dadaist wouldn't see coming. Think about it, or don't...the Dadaists don't care. They'll be scratching their heads that Blue Devils did the ultimate Dada on Dada itself. It's like a recursive image in reflecting mirrors. It's so Dada to the nth degree that one can't see where it ends and an alternate reality begins. Which brings me to the old joke: How many Surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb? A fish. Okay, so Surrealists and Dadaists aren't exactly the same thing, but I choose to celebrate Dadaism by choosing to blur the line is distinction, or the wavy dotted line of indistinction. You say "indistinction" isn't a word? Tell that to a Dadaist! Score: Blue Devils, an egg. Dadaism, a chicken.

  32. Neat story came from the Academy tonight originally they were not coming up to this show due to wanting to save some money before leaving for a full tour, but a couple from New Mexico stepped up and paid full 2 days of tour so the corps could come up for the New Mexico fans. It is just what I heard when they said it at the show. This is why I love the activity.

  35. OK I was in Bayonne tonight the Surf stole the show. The sticks were great got the crowd into it with them. I think it is safe to say Surf is going to surprise a lot of people this Year. 36 years ago My age out year with the Bridgemen we surprised people with new uniforms and a show that was a little bit different. Tonight the Surf took the place by storm with new Uniforms and a show that is a little bit different. I don't know what judges look for these day's but I think people seeing this show will love it. If the Surf is at a show near you spend a couple bucks a have a good time with the Jersey Surf.

  41. I've worked in the advertising industry since I graduated from college and aged out of the Crossmen. I'm a media strategist and tactician. Drum corps has thousands and thousands of alumni who are still living who have marched in corps from the 70's until now. Those alumni are the "lowest hanging fruit" for attendance to the activity--people we would say SHOULD be the easiest to reach and convert to attendance. There should be enough of them around the country to fill every stadium at every tour show. Yet, they aren't coming. When the activity honestly addresses the reason for that and makes some changes, the attendance problem may go away. I also agree with the person above who mentioned the broken business model. In the real business world, you don't keep escalating the cost to produce your product unless you get a return on that investment measured in dollars, not tenths of a point. The activity is spending more and more while becoming less accessible and appealing to many alumni and the general population. That makes no business sense whatsoever. No amount of advertising can make people buy a product that doesn't appeal to them. You can get them to try it once, but its mostly the responsibility of the product itself to get them to repurchase it. BTW--there were more people in the stands back in '78 when I marched than there are now. AND the finals were broadcast on a national TV network live. We were on one of the first drum corps tours of the south and the stands were packed at every stop.

  43. One could surmise that the important solos already go to the people with the strongest chops. But playing in a musical manner that is unforced and playing in a forceful manner that is terror on the lips are choices that staffs feel they need to contend with today. Either way, I'm comfortable with entrusting the professionals we bring in to teach the members with making the decisions on what is best for their corps and their members.

  45. Just wanted to quote something I just read in Drum Corps World: "....the one event no corps wants to experience hit the Santa Clara Vanguard on their way to New Mexico -- the refrigeration system for Miss Amana, the corps’ meal truck, broke down in Flagstaff, AZ, leaving the corps without her for two days. Thank goodness for volunteers! Between the innovative Miss Amana team, some local SCV alumni and local restaurateur Joe Guzzardi, owner of Joe’s Pasta House in Rio Rancho, NM, the corps was well-fed until rejoining the repaired vehicle in Mesa. And in true drum corps fashion, after learning of SCV’s food situation, Phantom Regiment invited them to share in their substantial after-performance snack before they all headed down the highway for the overnight drive to Arizona for the “Southwest Corps Connection.”" With all the angry voices on DCP right now, its good to know that our favorite corps doesn't hesitate to help another in need. We might continue to bash each other and fight for who is really the best......while our favorite corps just work their way down the road and do their best to help each other when needed. THIS is a big part of what drum corps is all about! Wish you best of luck down the road SCV.
