  4. Ads on the site appear based on your geography, stuff you search for and other sites you visit. Basically, the ads are tailored to what Google thinks YOU are interested to see. DCP has nothing to do with this. Anyway, you are likely receiving these ads because you might live in an area that is a key geography for an upcoming election and based on the fact you have visited different political sites (or browsed political articles from links on Google News). In short, YOU are the reason you see these ads on DCP, not DCP (most ads on this site aren't even in English for me).

  5. Seems like Kris has the same set of cards that my wife does. Whenever I would walk by she would hold up a card that said 5.7... 5.5... 5.9... (I even used to get a 6.0 every once in a while) Now she holds up cards that say -1.0... -2.0... -3.00 Oh well.....

  6. This. Also, I don't want to hear a bunch of rehashed tunes they've already played better in previous years. They've done enough of that over the years. I want something fresh and new from Madison.

  9. My daughter would like to be in a winter guard this year or next. She is currently 13. However all the winter guard in southeast WI or WI in general are all part of a school's band. Is there anyone in WI or Northern IL for her to join? Neither her middle school or high school have a winterguard program. Really don't have much of a marching program in general.

  10. ***** SUN DEVILS OFFICIAL NEWS RELEASE ***** 9/20/2012 The Sun Devils, who have been dormant for the last two competitive seasons, have been quietly working on bolstering the corps' infrastructure. New horns, new harnesses, and a new truck are just some of the items that were needed in order to finally make a successful re-emergence. One of the most important items was a permanent home. We are excited to announce that the Sun Devils Drum and Bugle Corps will now call Citrus High School, in Inverness, FL…HOME! The final approval was signed off by the band director, principal, and the school board superintendent yesterday. On the back of that good news, RPT Percussion Theater (Indoor), one of the Sun Devils Inc., Performing Art Groups, will also be making the move to Citrus High School as well. Brian York, band director at Citrus High School, said, "we are excited to have the Sun Devils here on campus. It will be a win-win for both groups." The move was conceptualized by both Vic Kulinski, Benny Pisani. Both of whom want to see Florida drum corps continue and have representation at DCA Finals for years to come. Recruitment tables: The Sun Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, RPT, and Impact will be setting up recruitment tables at the following shows: 9/29 – Citrus High School : Hurricane Pride Invitational Marching Band Festival 10/6 – Leesburg High School : Central Florida Marching Arts Invitational 10/27 - Crystal River : Golden Pirate Invitational The 2013 staff and our first Drum Corps Experience Weekend will be announced in separate releases.

  11. While I'm not the most gung-ho guy for Thom Hannum, last year WAS his first year with the corps, and there was possibly some adjusting going on... I think their drums will improve next year and in the future. As for Sylvester? Hmm...

  12. Alrighty then; now if you would want to implement your drum corps ideas in this SDCA venue, and you think that particular venue represents what you call drum corps, then I would say go for it!!!! However, I disagree with you about DCI being close minded. DCI is no more closed minded about 'high quality' 'best of the best' youth oriented drum corps than the Little League World Series is closed minded about 'high quality' 'best of the best' youth baseball.

  13. Bloo '09's hole is the piccolo trumpet soloist- he hurt his foot mid season and just played the solo from there on out. It was fun to watch early season, this little teeny bell marching with mellophones (the largest bell!). He even played all the mello parts when he was with them in the drill.

  15. Thank you for the explanation, Daniel and John. I would gladly put up with some political ads over putting up with DCP not being here. And that explains why I keep seeing ads for cheese.

  17. This is probably the best explanation of the situation. DCP has very little control over what ads appear on the website. It's mostly controlled by the factors explained above. For example, I'm seeing ads for US Cellular right now because I recently visited their website to price out new phone contracts. The ads truly are based off of your browsing history.

  22. honestly, I would like to try some older equipment. Just to see what it is like. I've only played on a three valve G... don't remember what make or model. But it wasn't an awful instrument. A different sound, and it did feel different, but I didn't get to play it for more than 5 minutes... and it was like 6 or 7 years ago. I can tell you it was a better instrument than the DyNASTY Bb baris... that horn was atrocious. Brass playing in drum corps is different nowadays. The "go for it" nature of playing loud is long gone. Even the writing is different. I think it's worse personally. Only a handful of arrangers actually write well for what they are writing for. It has become better over the past couple of years though. I feel as though the Bb lines write around the big switch were more balsy, and louder than corps now(this is just what I can tell on the DVD). But Cadets 2000 was playing on some crappy versions of the horns they are using today, and I feel they had more impact than say Cadets 2011. But then Cadets 2007 melted my face off... I feel like the difference in horn lines is way more about the writing and teaching than the horns themselves. Yeah, it has something to do with it... but not as big as we all think. Now if you handed today's kids these horns... they would say "WTF???" "There are valves missing.... and WTF is this thing????? Am I playing a frickin' French Horn thing?" Tuba players would say, "First they make me play with 3 valves??? Now this crap?? Seriously??" It would be interesting to hear what people could do with the instruments of back then. Then again... maybe leave it in the past???

We came to everyone with a crisis a couple of weeks ago and you responded. Bushwacker Alumni, Friends of the corps, members of other corps, other drum corps, corporations, all of you... WE DID IT!

  28. If this were WGI where class was solely dictated by competitive success, I'd agree. But in DCI now-a-days class seems to be based almost solely on financial solvency. Obviously there are WC corps who haven't been really competitive in WC for several years, but they stay in WC because they are financially able to commit to the tour. Conversely, Blue Devils B and SCV C are much more competitive consistently than a few WC corps, but they stay in Open Class because of financial reasons.

  30. I admire your attempt at selective parsing of your values, Granny. Robert Smith was involved in programming Madison's 2011 show. DVD was there as well. The show contained a song by a noted drug dealer with a past in gang warfare. A man who shot his own brother for stealing a ring from him. This OK by you? (BTW - it is OK by me. But then again, so is John Bon Jovi ... if programmed properly.)

  31. On behalf of the entire Sun Devils organization, I would like to congratulate the members, staff, volunteers, and alumni of the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps on your 2012 DCA Class A Championship! It has been a long time coming. As someone who has seen your rise from the very beginning, I have always been a fan. From way back when I met Dana and Alby, to recently with Big Country, I knew CG was filled with people that have passion. Your passion was finally realized this past weekend. Enjoy your well deserved win! I look forward to seeing you on the field in 2013.

  35. It saddens me every time I see one of these groups, or any music ensemble in that country with young kids. It shows us that as a country we are far far behind other cultures. There are open class corps with hs and college aged kids that sound awful and look awful. Not to mention all of the HS bands all over the country that struggle to make characteristic sounds out of their instruments. Why shouldn't we demand this out of ourselves? Why can't we expect more out of our students? Out of our society as a whole? Meh, I digress. Because I'll venture into political areas. And this a thread to enjoy you tube videos. I just feel like these videos should bother musicians and music educators in this country a little more. We all watch them, say wow I wish my band played like that, then go back to the status quo. Ugh, I'll stop. I know it's a lot more than that, I'm not that naive, it would take a lot of changes across society.

  37. I would like to know why random political ads appear on the forum pages of DCP? I thought all forms of political messages, ads, etc was banned from these pages? I personally find some of these ads offensive. I further ask the powers that be in DCP to stop these one sides ads immediately. This site should remain politically neutral and feature no ads from either party.

  38. Agreed. Except that the wrath should be directed at Google, not DCP. For the rest of you, click on the ads and help DCP stay alive and thriving.

  41. Do corps put out "soccer shirts" like these? It doesn't even have to be the same quality, but if I saw one of these designs with a Madison logo on it I'd definitely be more willing to buy it than say a summer tour show-specific shirt. Mostly because it actually evokes the uniform's look with the sash. I'd feel pretty awesome wearing this. Like a way of being a part of the corps without actually being a member... the same way fans buy sports Jerseys for football/baseball/etc.

  43. Here come the red negatives :) I have been a part of drum corps for many many moons; I love the activity; I will always be a part of the activity at some capacity. The thing is that as a spectator, again, as a spectator if I had to make a choice between 50 yard line tickets to the DCI Finals or 50 yard line tickets to the NFL Superbowl, and I could only go to one, well sorry folks I am at the Superbowl. Why? Because while as a spectator I love both activities the DCI finals has the best 'youth' musicians and although it is a competition the judging is subjective, whereas the NFL Superbowl has the best, not just adult, but the best 'professional' players and the competitive outcome is objective. And here is the kicker; the paying public who use their expendable income to go to events would overwhelmingly agree with my reasoning. And that is why football is not going away.

  44. I seriously dobt the NFL is about to forgo the millions, perhaps billions, of revenue dollars go by the wayside. I believe as long as their are humans still living on earth, there will always be major league football. So no need to worry about the possibility of the end of drum corps should this sport ever cease to exist. Just my two cents worth.

  45. So i decided to share the recently stumbled upon documentary about radical street marching bands, and the Honk Festival which takes place every year near boston. Being involved with both drum corps and groups like these i always thought it would be interesting to slightly merge the two ideas. Maybe adding a little drill to some of the marching bands (which i've already tried to do) .. Or getting say a group of crusaders to join the jam sessions at honk, or starting a small group of their own to commit spontaneous acts of musical performance. When i moved to chicago 3 years ago i got involved with a couple street marching bands, i was surprised to find that there was little to no crossover between these bands, drum corps, or even high school/college marching bands.. But most of the members we're actually self taught musicians. Thoughts?

  46. Okay , this is not meant to say that Crown does not have a great staff, but sometimes there are opportunities to look for improvement. Crown finished relatively low in drums this past year, is it possible that they could go after Tom Aungst? I am not sure if Aungst left Blue Stars for personal reasons, (i had heard he may retire) but he would have the support and talent pool to push them maybe over the top. Add in Sylvester and maybe you get a corps that is the last name called on a Saturday night in August.

  47. The Tampa Bay Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps is pleased to announce some additions and changes to the 2013 instructional team. The 2013 Thunder Brass Team will be led by Co-Caption Head Frank Williams and Dennis Laorenza that bring a tremendous amount of experience and professionalism to the Thunder as we enter our third year of DCA competition. Also, George De Guzman will return in a much more active role as Brass Coordinator. The Thunder’s Percussion Team will stay in tack for the 2013 season under the supervision of Co-Caption Heads Charlie George and Chris Bershad. Musical arrangements will remain in place with Ron Ellis writing the brass book and Omar Carmentes writing the percussion book. In addition, the Thunder has obtained the drill writing services of Jeff Bridges for the upcoming season as we focus on the corps third and pivotal year as an Open Class DCA corps. Other appointments and additions to the Tampa Bay Thunder staff will be announced shortly. We would like to thank those staff members that helped us grow during the past two season and wish them well with their future endeavors. Tampa Bay Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps
