  2. Let's see if we can come to an agreement on something: At some point in a person's adult scholastic education the academic study of Caligula is probably acceptable; but showing the Malcolm McDowell movie of Caligula to a high school history class would probably be going too far. Agreed?

  4. Just read this myself. As an alumnus, all I want is for them to go back to the real uniform, and have Cadets2 wear possibly the "Demon" color scheme. Either way, The Cadets need their traditional uniform back.

  5. Well...when I woke up this morning, I never anticipated that something you wrote would instantly make it onto the list of the top ten most logical things I've ever seen written on DCP.

  6. Awesome: so then no legit conversations regarding Crown winning DCI? They'll come close (obviously) with their talent & current design philosophies, but if they choose difficult content that is uncleanable in order to "challenge" the performer, over effective content that is also challenging but cleanable, they will likely never come closer than 2nd place I guess. Also, your comment (and others' similar comments) imply that Blue Devils do not challenge their members. What say you, Blue Devils alumni (especially those who have won DCI): were you "hardly challenged?"

  13. Coming soon ... evil drum corps novel. This book is not a product of the San Francisco Renegades, Drum Corps International, or Drum Corps Associates, and no endorsement or affiliation with any of the foregoing is to be implied. WARNING. This book is not for kids. There are adult situations, adult language, adult beverages, adult people, and several extremely chaotic international incidents described in this book.

  14. 1) Hop: "I'm thinking maybe 'Both Sides Now' would work for us." DCP: 20 pages of discussion about the merits of using pop music in drum corps.... questions and debates about obtaining music rights... arguments/speculation about the possible use of props/different uniforms in such a show. 2) Hop: "The other day I was in a music store that sells old records, and I heard 'Boogie Till Ya Puke' from Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band. I wonder..." DCP: 30 pages of heated discussion about whether or not an artist such as Root Boy Slim is appropriate for drum corps.... whether or not the Cadets are sullying the tradition of Holy Name by playing such music... will Root Boy's estate give up the music rights... and who the hell is Root Boy Slim, anyhow?? 3) Hop: "Zamfir. Hmmm. No drum corps has ever used pan-flute music, to my knowledge." DCP: 50 pages of discussion about who is Zamfir, and why his music would or would not be relevant to a modern-day drum corps audience... what type of percussion writing would be needed to support such a brass book... would a "typical Cadet" high-speed visual show be appropriate for music that tends to be soft and lyrical... and perhaps the show could be designed as a "storyline" concept, taking fans inside the days of easy-listening radio, with Zamfir as the recurring theme. First show, June 2013: Cadets unveil their updated "West Side Story" show theme.

  15. In 2008, I flew from Jacksonville to Boston and my flight was delayed, but it turned out not to be disappointing. The airport was filled with young people, all headed to winter camps. There were Troopers, members of Phantom, Blue Stars, Bluecoats, just to name a few and well over 150 kids, enough to have a full contingent in a drum corps. I heard about shows, or at least what they could share about shows, and as is so often the case, left with a great feeling about drum corps after speaking with actual members. However, these Floridians were headed out of state to march. Last summer at Indy a woman who worked at the Bluecoats souvenir stand recognized my Boston accent. She was from Connecticut and had marched with Bluecoats a few years earlier. She had said there were more New Englanders in Bluecoats and Carolina Crown than Boston Crusaders, and what state is the most represented in BAC? Florida! Drum corps owes alot to Florida, but keeping a corps alive in the sunshine state has been a challenge. Florida did have great corps and coming from an area that once boasted of having corps such as 27th Lancers, North Star, not to mention Holy Family Defenders, St. Francis Sancians, Pembroke Imperials, Diplomats, East Coast Jazz, and Spectra, as well as the greats corps of the 50's and 60's and many small but lovable corps, losing a corps is painful and when they're gone, they're gone. As a loyal Boston Crusaders fan, I'm glad the drum corps tradition is alive, and appreciate those from out of state who march with BAC and keep the tradition alive. I also know that if we ever lost BAC, they'd be irreplaceable. So I understand your concerns. I'd also like to say that if you were not paid for 2011, but still remained on staff, you should be commended. Those who marched will know, and while it's a lousy deal and won't pay the bills, it will be appreciated and perhaps will inspire them to give of themselves. Many BAC alums and some staff and board members post on DCP, and have shared BAC's amazing story of emerging from insolvency to being one of the most respected and well run corps in DCI. You need vision, but as you mention, you also need business minded people. Business people know how to make the tough decisions and inspire confidence, which leads to members and donations. Florida is the land of retirees and many look for charitable organziations to lend a hand. This could be an untapped resource. It will take people who know the activity to give it direction, but solid business people can make it happen, and as someone from the non-proifit sector who relies heavily on people with good business minds, good business practices are universal, so if a director who knows drum corps leads and has good direction from business people, the corps could soar. Now as far as your son is concerned, perhaps there is another reason that Spirit did not turn out as he wished. Since he hails from Florida like so many members of BAC, perhaps he's a Boston Crusader at heart! So if he's still eligible, make him practice and send him to a BAC winter camp which will be held in where else but sunny Florida.

  17. You can't overlook the announcement of Eric Babula as the guard supervisor, forget what the show title is and what may or may not be in the show, the big story here is Eric. I marched with him at Cabs back in the day when we were just kids and then again in Cadets and he's such an amazing performer and instructor. I've been waiting for years now for when he finally gets his chance to shine and am so glad it's finally here, I'm just happy I can say I knew him when... Congrats Eric.

  27. Woah, Guy!!!!! Chris Green is a very very smart man. I'm not going to get this ball going, but watch out. Bashing someone who's done so much for the activity just isn't fair.

  28. I totally agree! So many people on DCP complain about DCI not giving much support for the small corps...but how many reviews do we read that start off with something like "sorry, had to park my car and get a hot dog so I missed the small corps" or "sorry, I really wanted to watch the drumline warm up in the lot so I didn't get to see the first few performing units".

  37. I know for a fact that Forte has folded and are liquidating all equipment and uniforms to pay off debts. I contacted them last month to see what their status was. I got a reply back from someone (business manager or board member, didn't identify themself) still with them replied back that they were finished and with all their past problems and reputation to end the corps. The kids I met at the Dallas show were super. A bunch of corps are going to get a good bunch of kids this season.

  38. According to the US Constitution First Amendment the 'Federal Government', and just the 'Federal Government', cannot create a law which limits speech; also according the the US Constitution Tenth Amendment what is not covered in the US Constitution is therefore left up to the individual States; so, the original intent of the Constitutional framers is that while the Federal Government can not regulate speech at all a State could regulate speech within its own boarders. However, this view of Constitutional original intent has been skewed in modern times by those who believe that changing mores and cultural views should actually negate the original intent and ever changing interpretations should morph the meaning of the Constitution.

  39. I think it is actually a "great" thing for them! They need to be held accountable before being allowed to re-enter DCI.

  40. You want to discuss the nuisances, fine. The Supreme court just ruled 9-0 that the FCC (Federal) cannot curtail Free Speech on the air waves; however in the same ruling they also stated that the Broadcast Companies 'can' self-regulate speech such as nudity or foul language because while the Federal cannot create the rule/law the companies themselves can. Moreover, while the Federal Government cannot curtail any music or show concepts in public access businesses, the State, County, City (unless their constitutions state differently), and the Business itself can curtail any music or any show concepts they so desire. (Example: a club can say to bands we play rock music here not country music). So, within the realm of DCI, a fan yelling Yea or Boo at a competitive event is within context of the venue and probaly would not be an issue to curtail; however, a drum corps show with nude pole dancing guard girls, a leather clad drumline with their behinds exposed, and a hornline with instruments being covered to look like phallic symbols, DCI could certainly curtail that speech, if they so chose, within the venue of DCI competition and rightly so under the law.

  41. EXACTLY!! WGI has been doing this for years (live-streaming finals), and they do it super affordably. They have zero problems selling out UD Arena, and they have zero problems convincing to go to the hell-hole of Dayton OH, the not-exactly hallmark of vacation spots in early May (side note: I'm from Central OH, and I am only kind of half joking bashing Dayton). Oh yeah: and BOA does the live stream finals as well. You know, BOA who has finals in the same arena. DCI is well behind their counterparts here

  42. As for the one post before mine, Allentown is a notoriously 'hard' audience for the DCI corps. They know what they like, and enjoy. That being said, if they LIKE it, they will give it up for that corps more than anywhere else will give it up. It's not a golf-clappin' must-be-polite crowd whether we dig it or not bunch. Yes, egos are large, immense very fragile amonngst some design staffs and individuals. They put a lot of time into trying to make things awesome, and I believe in some cases, seriously over-think themselves into a corner. They also can be like the Emperor in the fable who walked out buck nekkid into the street. Allentown is the place where the kid who tells him he's not wearing a stitch of clothes on his bod tends to be in the DCI season.

  45. So, what you are saying is this... Larry, Moe, and Curly were thinking that Abbot and Costello had given up on rebuilding the corps, so Larry Moe, and Curly made an announcement that they were going to start a new corps with the same name sans the 'Sound'; then Abbot and Costello surprised everyone by announcing SURPRISE we just paid off all the debt, well not quite all of the debt, we did not pay the staff, or reimburse the kids from last season, but we did pay off All of the debt; then Larry, Moe, and Curly went Oops and quickly closed up shop. Nice!

  46. Very extensive explanations given here on why there are so many incompletes. One question : where were you when I was in school and my work wasn't going to be ready in time, and I needed someone like you to help me convince my teacher not to take me down a few grades and give me an " incomplete " ? You're good at this. Very good, imo.

  47. Yes, I meant it as sarcasm and it is actually directed toward whomever put out the disingenuous communication that 'ALL' debts had been paid. And yes this is serious; if you have read my previous postings about Teal, Forte, VK, Revo, etc... you will discover where I stand on the subject of you, the kids, and all others who got shafted by these issues.

  48. Apparently.... a) The directors of Teal Sound (ie Abbot and Costello) shut down the corps; b) then immediately some others (ie Larry, Moe, and Curly) created a different new corps called Teal using the same exact same look, sans the name 'Sound'; c) then the directors of the original Teal Sound (Abbot and Costello) announced that they had paid off ALL debt; d) then the new Teal people (Larry, Moe, and Curly) closed down everything about the new corps. Still confused?

  49. Are you saying that if you let the members of each corps vote, that some corps memberships would vote to take the field with incomplete shows at the beginning of the season instead of complete ones? really?
