  1. To me - it's not even about the caption head, but the role of their guard overall. Ever since they went back to an all female guard - every program has been specifically designed around a "feminine" theme with emphasis on the guard to portray the female story line. It was a smart move the first year with "Juliet" as it served to re-introduce the guard - but I think that over the last 3 years, it has become more and more of a problem, as the guard is somewhat boxed in as to what they can do and the type of portrayal that they can program. I'm really hoping the show is non literal (or at least not based on a female character) this year so that the guard design has more freedom! Later, Mike

  2. "Top of the show, to the bottom of the show. All in, no met" - Bucs DM. Great moment at beginning of show!

  3. I think they should move very little, until they see the on field adjudicator cross onto the field, then they should all chase him/her like zombies. hahahaahah.

  6. Maybe Phantom should do the opposite of everything they originally intended to do - just like George Costanza did in that one Seinfeld episode.

  7. I'd say anything > 15 years is "new and fresh" to a LARGE portion of the audience. We hear all the time in threads that the audience is made up of a large percentage of parents, high-school band kids, fairly recent MM's, etc. A bunch weren't even born when they did Phantom way-back-when. Know who my daughter's (and 2 of her friends this year, all 14 yr old) and son's favorite shows were past 2 years? SCV. They don't even know what Phantom of the Opera is.

  8. I want to say, first and foremost how happy I am that DCP has housed this great thread for many years now. Thank you so much for pretty much allowing me to run amok. Thank you for allowing me to kind of take care of things here. Very appreciated. When I felt the need of your help... I asked... and you were there. In all these years, I haven't asked much. But, when I did happen to ask... you were there. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!! I can't imagine how hard it is to be a moderator in a public forum. You can't possibly know all the history between folks. I know a lot but, not nearly enough. How could I? How could you? Too many people.. too many years.... too much has been said and done. This isn't a place for #####fests or grudgematches. Yeah, this is a competitive thing but, this isnt the place to voice about it. This thread is here to honor all. Share memories, speak of all the good in our Drum Corps History. Share laughter, and boast about instructors or any person that happened to be next to us in line.... that made a huge difference in our lives. Great place to relive, learn, love.... pass on history.... Example: maybe you have heard someone's name but never met them.... here's the place that you can "put a name to a face" Hope we can continue here....

  10. I'd say a combination of variety and quality in both compositional excellence and execution. Thinking of Troopers and Cadets....both challenging bits of Americana....for me, the Bocook brass book was very well written....listen to what is happening in the inner brass parts..that's just one example.

  11. True, Crown did an Other Worldly show theme this year and suffered one of the largest placement falls in the World Class Division... meanwhile Cadets were in 2nd place for most of the season with a pandering, cheesy, Faux Patriotism show. Bottom line, it really doesn't matter if you play Jingle Bells or obscure Music nobody has ever heard of.... its all in how its executed and makes these older DCI judges impressed.

  14. Saw the Bucs and Cabs in Wayne,NJ show back in July. I told my wife then that IF Bucs ever get a handle on that show, that they would win. Demand of simultanious responsibility on the performers was incredible. Question was would they be able to get it by finals. Answer is yes. If there was another week or 2 to go, watch out! I was also impressed by what Cabs were doing....breaking new ground for such a storied corps! All the body work in the show by the musicians also adds simultanious resposibility.... The theme was pretty obvious. The hornline cranked!!! Fusion Core also had a show with lots of body and a theme that was obvious....and a hornline that cranked! At Finals that night, I felt everyone performed incredible performances of their programs. The judges placed them where they did, as they saw it for everyone. No matter what, someone is going to disagree with the results. As a performer, once we get over the intensity of that night; and for some, the disappointment, we are filled with joy and love for our Drum Corps family that we fought all year with to be the best we could be. And for our extended family from the other corps who toiled as hard as we did. The true winning that we all get to experience is the family of drum corps.....Relationships that last a life time! I'm ready to start for next season already..... See y'all on the field or in the stands!

  16. I actually think Don does a good job with the brass arranging most of the time. He's not the program coordinator so he doesn't have complete control over the music and how they want to use it. I think PR may want to look at Dan Farrell and Dan Richardson and their roles with programming personally.

  17. Not being able to NOT watch Carolina Gold's Colorguard. Well staged, Well choreographed and well performed. Watching Bushwackers from the back. Impressed. Playing the opening statement with Govies and realizing there are only 12 of us producing such a big sound.

  21. Unless you are trying to pander to the judging community to win Gold or break into the top 12 PLEASE take chances: Try the unplugged idea, you might sell $50,000 in tee shirts even if you come in 18th place. Play a musical, Wicked would be awesome. Be the best show of the night and come in 16th place. Play whole songs, you won't win but there is nothing wrong with 14-22 place. Don't play a DCI classic if you are a lower placing Open Class corps. Why subject yourselves to that? Our 2015 production "Pander". Pander to the crowd. You might come in 17th place but you'll get the first spring loaded standing O of the night and 500 kids will show up at your 2016 audition camp. Whatever you do, if its clean you will be loved. Artsy/Fartsy is ok, but dirty it is unbearable.

  22. 1984 was an incredible year, and finals an incredible night. BD that year, in my humble opinion, put on the greatest performance ever not to win DCI. Including '93 Star. BTW I agree with Garfield's win - it's still my favorite performance of all times. Two of the greatest corps laying out their greatest performances. Anyone that walked away from that show not loving drum corps probably shouldn't have been at that show.

  28. The 1979 Boston Crusader's fielded only 25 Brass players and yet came in tied for 12th place in the DCI prelims in GE Brass. In other words we made the DCI finals in GE Brass with 12 sopranos, 4 Mellophones, 7 Baritones, and 2 Contrabass finishing .01 behind the Bayonne Bridgemen and only .03 behind SCV. The # 2 Visual judge had us in 9th place in execution and 9th place in CRE. The # 1 judge was not so kind scoring us 17th and 23rd. The avg. put us in 13th place overall in what was then referred to as the marching and maneuvering caption. I was the soprano soloist that year for the DCI Prelims (3 of us rotated the solo from show to show). I say I was the soloist but the fact is we all felt as if we were playing solo's due to the fact that we needed to stretch our intervals out to 6 paces for a lot of the show. We certainly were in no danger of bumping into one another. You got to feeling kinda lonely out there at times so that it felt good to catch a glimpse of a fellow Crusader somewhere out in the distance. Do I feel proud to have been chosen to be the soloist for such a amazing little Brass line? Absolutely! Am I as proud of my solo that day? Not so much. I think that for most soloists listening to their recording is like being a beautiful woman standing in front of a mirror. Everyone tells her she's beautiful but she's the one who sees all her "little faults." I didn't feel particularly beautiful that day. Still, you've got to admit, those could be some of the most amazing scores in the history of DCI in spite of my paper thin high F.

  32. 1978 is more believable. I checked on Corpsreps.com and it didn't happen in '79, but it was so long ago I could have forgot. 1980 made up a lot for 1978!!
