" Yes, Open Class Corps can sometimes be entertaining and not all that bad, but let's get real here, none of these Corps could really compete well in the World Class Division if they were subjected to the judging at the WC level " ( overheard several times before such Corps got their chance to prove such assessments as ultimately inaccurate).

  7. Working on (and off) my database of older corps shows and checking shows that were recorded to add a show here and there. Looking at what's in History of Drum Corps Vol I, Fleetwood site, and DCW CDs. Went to look at the listings for Preserve Our Corps Memories which has things split by corps which makes show checking a bit more complex. But... getting some weird results checking POCM with pages missing and a link from corpsreps just going into outer (web) space ("site is coming").... Plus last shows even listed (if not for sale) is 2010 that I can find. Anyone know the status of POCM and Glenn????? Shoulda checked out that Sleepy Eye show when I had the chance....

  8. I recall meeting some staff members from (maybe I'll tell, maybe I won't) who explained the 1987 judging to me. Setting it up, the last regular season Garfield-SCV (undefeated) showdown was DCI Midwest one week before Finals. SCV won by 1.2 (the Finals were rained out, so Prelims scores stuck). Now, there is no known recap of this---not online nor in the recap book that I bought from DCI. But according to (staffers from an unaffected corps), Garfield received an inexplicably low score from one of the judges, who would be seeing them again at Championship Finals. This led to the Garfield staff begging and pleading with the 3 DCI Finals drum judges to "make up the difference." So, Garfield took a hit from a judge in Finals (look for it) and scored 10, 10 and 10 from the drum guys. Sounds to me as though these guys wrote a joke after hearing the punchline... I remember looking at them incredulously and then bursting into guffaws. There was a "how dare you doubt us" look from them. So, what else? I also remember, during my first year attending shows, that since Finals were being held in Madison (1985), "DCI would make sure that the Scouts won." BZZZZZZZZZ! Missed it by 3.8!

  9. I'll apologize ahead of time for the rant that is about to follow, but I feel like venting about something. I always appreciate it when an eastern corps makes the trip out west to start the season, like Crown and BAC have recently (and The Crossmen this year ... although they are based west of the Mississippi). But lets be honest ... these corps are only doing something once every decade or so that BD, SCV, BK, etc. do every single year. People claim that it is too expensive to have all the eastern corps travel to the west coast each year, but that is exactly what the western corps do every year and they don't seem to be struggling more than anyone else. When I lived in Virginia, I attended the DCI show in Salem where I could usually see six or seven corps, including three or four corps that were likely to be DCI finalists for $30. Last time I went, I saw Crown, The Cadets, and BD in the same show for $30. Salem is near Roanoke and there are about 300,000 in the area. If I couldn't attend that show, I could travel a few hours in the other direction and attend a similar show in Northern Virginia. Now, I live in Utah, and for the same price as the Salem, VA show I can see a show with a SCV, BK, and several open class corps and world class corps that are unlikely to be finalists. BD is even skipping the Ogden show this year (they will be in Illinois on the same night). I don't mean any offense to the corps that will be at Ogden this year. I am very excited to see them perform and am happy to pay $30+ to see them, plus money spent on concessions and other souvenirs. With that said, I would be willing to pay even more to see the corps at the very top of the activity. Ogden is near Salt Lake City on the Wasatch Front where over 2,000,000 live. I've been to the Ogden show for two years in a row before that, and it is always packed. High School students come from as much as 2-3 hours away, or more, to see the show. The next closest show is in Denver, which is 8 hours away. The first year I went to the show, I didn't get tickets until about a month before the show and all the best seats were sold out. I had to settle for tickets on about the 20 yard line. Last year I ordered tickets as soon as they were on sell in order to get closer to the 50 yard time. When I bought tickets in the first week, the center section of the stadium was almost sold out already. This was during the height of the recession. I just checked if there were still tickets available to the show this year (next week) and was able to buy four tickets right next to each other in the same row on the 50 yard line. Clearly tickets are not selling as well this year as they have the last couple years. I don't understand why DCI neglects everyone west of the Mississippi. There are a lot of fans in the west and several storied drum corps with a long history of success in the activity. California is the most populous state in the country. The population of other western states is growing rapidly. The handful of shows that are in the west are well attended, and that is without a full lineup of top corps. It seems to me that DCI is leaving a lot of money on the table, and missing out on a large potential fan base, by refusing to support any major shows in the west. The claim that it is too expensive to have corps travel west does not hold water, as the western corps travel to the east coast every year (including non-finalist corps like The Academy and the Mandarins). There should be a major DCI show (where nearly every corps attends) in the bay area and Denver every single year. I know this will cause some of the early eastern shows to go away, but so much more will be gained by having a true national tour. It is just common sense. If we could still give thumbs down, I would welcome as many thumbs down as you want to give. I know this post is annoying, but it is the one thing that I feel the need to get on my soapbox about. I love nearly everything else about drum corps.

  10. To quote John Lennon, it may have been a long, cold lonely winter so far, but days are about to get a little brighter, as our 23rd season of DCPI gets underway today! We've got some very good turnout this season and a good mix of veteran competitors and fresh faces looking to make a name for themselves. Last season, Ivory Brigade proved that it is indeed possible for a rookie corps to win a championship, and now they'll have a lot of hungry corps nipping at their heels as they seek to defend their title. The season gets underway today with four regional events, and will see some early action tomorrow with the first Sweepstakes events of the season right out of the gate. Out west, we start things off at Fresno Central HS in Fresno CA. This event was looking like it may be cancelled up until a few days ago, when the Star of Jupiter corps stepped in to fill some spots on the lineup. In the southern region, the Confederate Regiment organization brings fantasy corps back to Wichita Falls, TX with their home show at Memorial Stadium. This is a fun venue to perform at and it's good to see a corps make the effort to bring it back onto the calendar. San Antonio Xpress and Texas Zephyrs will also be looking to represent their home state, and New Zealand's Aftershock organization is looking to make a strong impression as well after making their debut during last season. In the midwest, Ivory Brigade starts their championship defense in the Chicagoland area, marching off against Dark Knights and River City Regiment at the Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle IL. Finally, out east, Johnstown PA's Richland HS welcomes the Buckeye Brass group of corps to town. They'll face off against veterans such as Pride of Salem, Harmonic and Valley Vanguard as well as newcomers like Hamburg Junior Buccaneers, Schuykill Thunder and Panther Prime. As a reminder, there is still time to vote on the poll question of whether to allow the top 6 placing corps from Open Class and Class A to enter the World Class prelims during finals week. This poll will remain open until the 31st, but I'll be posting reminders about it for the first few days of the season: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/161548-allow-top-6-open-classclass-a-corps-in-wc-prelims/?mode=show

  13. Here's our next batch of updates. Things are starting to really look interesting at the top, as River City Regiment put on a masterful performance to vault to the top of the standings. 17. Here is our next batch of scores. Pride of Salem looked very good this afternoon and have set a very high bar for the remaining corps to beat. At this point, it looks like it may be a long shot for any Open Class corps trying to push their way into finals. 26. Of course, Captain is also often shortened to "Cap", and we all know that there is a limit, or cap, that one may place on most things. Hence, the difficulty in distinguishing caption box delineations. One can't put a cap on a cap, unless it is first approved by the cap Cap. It is only then that the cap cap becomes the Cap's cap cap. (Which one could say is a load of c®ap...but that's cheating.)

  27. Hi everyone! I am part of a new marching band program in the Black Hills of South Dakota and am in charge of the guard. This is my first time running a guard and am in the process of purchasing equipment. I grew up using 5.5' fiberglass but have been getting the impression that the standard nowadays is for field shows to use 6' aluminum. My dilemma is I will be having students from 6th grade through 12th grade. I am unsure as to whether the 6th graders could hanlde 6' or if I should have two different pole lengths or just go short all around. Anyone here have experience with an age range like this? I am also wondering what everyone likes to do for rehearsals. We will be meeting an hour a week after school this spring, hours will change in summer, not sure to what yet. Does anyone have a favorite routine they follow at rehearsals? I'm particularily interested in how long you spend on warm-up/strength training/technique/choreography and what your favorite warm-up routine is? I am a bit overwhelmed but have some VERY enthusiastic students that should make things fun. Any and all tips or advice would be appreciated! -Patrisha

  31. I think it's the difference between 'theme' and 'story.' Bluecoats and Blue Devils both had a wonderfully developed theme without hitting you over the head with a story. Or if it was there, it was buried deep enough as to not be obvious. I think that's a big turn off for fans - if you put a story in the show, you absolutely have to make it either so obvious that nobody can miss it (Spartacus, anyone?), or so subtle that if you don't see it you don't miss it. The shows that fans like the least are the ones that they know they're supposed to be getting something from, but can't figure out what it is. (Bluecoats "Imagine" in 2009 comes immediately to mind, and one that I seem to remember the staff even admitting that they should have made more clear.) Mike

  36. I had the pleasure of watching my grandson play trombone with the Fort Worth Youth Philharmonic Orchestra tonight. Up until recently I thought he was a cross-country runner, or basketball player, or baseball player that also played music, but watching his intensity on stage at Bass Hall, and listening to his playing (and watching the technique) shows me that at 14 he's a real player. Even neater is that their excellent tuba player was in Iceland looking at school (can't make this stuff up) so Kevin sat in on tuba, 2 seats over from Connor. What we do is worth something - in some cases it's worth a lot - we have inspired people to love music and to want to play better - in some cases to want to play supremely well. We've bought instruments, we've taught our kids, and more important we've gotten out of the way and gotten them better teachers when they had all we had to offer. Our activity has made a difference in the lives of thousands and thousands of kids, and almost 100% for the better - nothing's ever 100% good. The last piece tonight was "Jupiter" from Holst's "The Planets" I was listening to Connor playing the trombone part that the Cavies played - big and majestic and pulsing. Life is good. Life with music is better. Live with low brass music is best. Good night from the Lone Star State - back to frozen Boston (where it's supposed to snow again tomorrow) tomorrow night.

  37. There is a forum for everything. My wife and her family used to go to D+BC preformances years (decades) back and now that her parents are in their mid 80's, we have aquired all their old record albums. In there are multiple D+BC ones. I could not figure out how to post photos of the albums. I will go into my user control panel and see if I can put the photos there. I do not see how to subscribe to this thread to get email notifications of responses. PM me or reply here. I'll check back now and then. Here are a few: 1. 39. As you know, in the offseason, we approved a rule change that would allow Open Class and Class A corps to compete in the World Class prelims if there were 50 or fewer total corps registered. We are now at 63 registered corps, so it will not be feasible to allow all Open Class and Class A corps to enter the WC prelims this season. I am willing to allow a small group (the top 6 finishing corps in each division) to enter WC prelims if the directors approve this. The poll will open now and will run through the end of the second week of the season. Active DCPI directors are eligible to vote. For this to be approved (since it is very short notice), the vote will need to pass with AT LEAST TEN directors voting "Yes"; otherwise, finals will work as they normally do.

  42. I'd better get started, and in my typical fashion, I'll start with something I forgot to add from last week. I'll apologize to the Cabs Alumni for forgetting to mention their performance at Scranton in my rush to get it all done. They were their usual excellent selves, and tighter than Wayne, particularly in the lower brass. I do want to know what the Baris and Tubas are supplementing their diets with to get them to play as strong as they did at that performance. They shook the place and really gave some serious added push to the brass. They had a great full sound, a good tight sound, not over-played and spread, and it really added a good dimension to the ensemble. I picked up my friend and hit the road to Reading. I figured if the Simeone museum in Philly was able to get their priceless likely worth seven figures Ferrari 250 interim Berlinetta out for a live demo earlier in the day as well as one of their original Mercedes Gull-wing coupes, Big Sounds was on barring a get-the ark out flood. The parking crew did a great job in the rain, and that couldn't have been easy for them. As for caps, I lent my friend my CV cap, took my umbrella and my Carolina Crown military cap, and they kept us dry enough when we needed to stay relatively dry. I figured the corps had been working hard all day in the wet, I could hang tough out of respect. If my comments aren't as detailed, I also apologize. There was no way I could take notes without them being ruined, so I have to go by memory, and the contest was indeed memorable. I'd seen all of the competitors at least once this season, for some of them as many as 3-4 times, so I won't be as detailed. Leading off the contest, Carolina Gold. They were much, much improved over Chester, with a more confident brass and percussion performance. At times, one of the baris and Tubas have to remember that they've got other people playing and they don't have to do it all by themselves- that is... unless the others were backing out in certain sections. They know the truth, and they need to make adjustments and make sure of those things for next week. Every person, every note, the entire program. It's the only way to make it happen. They've pulled themselves into a solid 8th seed but they'll need to get those details squared away for Prelims so they have a good, consistent, professional run. The White Sabres came off as strong, solid, and professional. My friend was impressed with the quality of performance from such a small ensemble, and I told him he should be with the fine job they do. I mentioned that they needed some more spice and flair at Scranton, and I think they delivered on that issue, and the number and seeding proved that they had what it took and that they wanted to put on a quality, inspired performance regardless of the rain. I mentioned that Fusion felt they had a better run in them from percussion and brass at Scranton. They did. Better enough to propel them into a 3rd seed at prelims better. They know they're in amongst giants now, and I know from experience, there's no better thing to be, regardless where they end up. The feeling that one has when you know you're competitive with the very best draws something out of you, makes you more sharp. they even nicked Reading in Effect visual, which leads me to wonder how much of that was weighted by the Guard, who took top honors. I believe I've discussed how I've been noticing how much more the guards are figuring into the end results of late, and I think this is a positive. I think in the more distant past, they were underrated and way under-weighted in the total score. Again, I can't say enough about the turnaround their Guard's had this season, and it's something they should take deep pride in. Right now, they look like they're ready to make a nice run at Finals weekend and make a strong statement to everyone that they'd better be reckoned with in the future.
