  1. I really hope the guard can grab that trophy on Saturday. I started in '03 when the new staff came to rebuild Crown. To see Michael Townsend's choreo become fully realized and cleaned to near perfection is such an amazing thing to witness this season.

  2. Can you imagine the mocking that would be hurled at them if they did go back (and rightfully so, given the hype they built up around the change)? Honestly, it's absolutely the right thing to stick with the change, for good or ill.

  3. I'm still rooting for the Cadets to pull it off. Still feels weird, but there you go. :) Honestly, though, it's the first year in a long while where I will be happy with the results no matter how it shakes out - I'm a huge fan of all of the top 4 contenders. On a side note, this has been one of my more favorite threads this summer, as the Cadets folks have been so enthusiastic about the corps and the show's twists and turns . It's been fun to read, especially as a lot of the corps threads... um... have been ... less... positive about their corps. Anyways, it's nice to get a reminder sometimes that this activity is supposed to be fun! Mike

  5. I love the fact that our son gets to age out with the Cadets this year with this show and this awesome setting. Couldn't ask for a better scene than this one coming. Congrates to the Cadets and all the Corps. Its been a great year !!!

  7. Hey DCI: is it really too much to ask that you throw up at least a single high camera and microphone to cover the Open Class WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS on DCI Live!?!?

  8. Yeah, after a couple years of strong females the shopping thing seems a little regressive.

  9. Marching members of the Modern Era realize that Saturday, August first is the simultaneous triple birthday of Gino (brass caption head), Colin (percussion head), and of an aged out horn sgt. who hasn't been heard from in too long. Well, at the Bethlehem rehearsal Saturday just before ensemble, Gino went to continue the routine with the brass line, the DM asked for a moment, and then beginning with several cross field soloists the hornline moved Gino to tears as they surprised him with a symphonic full line brass rendering of "Happy Birthday." Said the master to the faithful, "That was so amazingly cool!!! No corps has ever done that for me before! When did you have time to learn that???" flabbergasted Gino asked. "Walking over to the field!" was the "spontaneous" full line response in perfect unison. Great kids, great tribute.

  10. I think this amazing show which still is amazing would be even more amazing with those cream pants highlighting that wonderful marching technique and stellar Cadets drill. Bring them back for INDY. We all respect you for taking risks but we'll love you more for going back!

  11. I don't think THEY thought the color change was going to be a game changer. It think everyone else thought it would be.

  14. Standing ovation for PR! WOW much improved since I last saw them. Show is much more cohesive and brass is on tonight! Couple notes: twice the crowd could hear the judges talking. Come on DCI

  15. Fine I'll play then. I hope City of Light is the last PR brass book I hear written by Don Hill. I haven't enjoyed a single show he's written. Ironically, I am infatuated with EVERY SINGLE PR show musically from 02-2011. My vote for replacement goes to Frank Sullivan. I've enjoyed most every show he's written. You can't watch this and not think he'd be great for phantom! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc1bsIXVlDs also if they get a program coordinator who has a clue, that'd be great. Programming has been... not great...even frustratingly bad, as of late. ---- Cavaliers: I would love to see Michael Gaines come back, or see him at bluecoats. I think he'd fit their style well

  16. What an awesome night. Congrats to all, but especially Bluecoats. Thanks to everyone that came tonight. We may have set an attendance record here too. Cue the DCI is dead choir!

  22. All history aside, I don't know how you can say that the admin has no interest in building a strong percussion line after the numerous moves they've made since 2010 that indicate the contrary. They have been lucky with a consistent core guard staff and brass staff, both of which have grown and changed considerably, but have seen the same key figures at their respective helps since... 2003? They're still looking for that magic in the percussion caption.

  29. Please respect my opinion here, but I think Phantom needs to find a new program coordinator. I just think that their shows, while always performed with the typical Regiment flair, lack the "oomph" needed to win a championship.

  30. I don't want to sound like Channel3 here but it just doesn't add anything. It dumbs down the show. When I think of "City of Light" I think of the beauty of Paris, not the shopping destinations.

  31. Yea, when I was there the schedule was different...almost everyone was there in January, and we did two camps each month, plus Sundays and Wednesday night sectionals. They don't do that anymore, but with the extended spring training, the net result is the same: Champions are built before you ever get on the bus.

  33. Why don't you take it up with the high school kids on Facebook rather than using it as an excuse to (yet again) bash Crown fans here? That way you can get your point across and maybe they will get it as they will be hearing it from someone on their own maturity level.

  39. This should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Nachfolgers Coffee's opinions are his/her/its own. He/she/it has absolutely no inside knowledge of anything that happens with the Crown administration. His/her/its opinions do not represent the drum corps or the alumni. If some dino mod wants to delete this post too then I guess there's no hope for this place.

  42. Totally agree. The shopping motif makes it bourgeois. All of those brands are readily found in the U.S., so why focus on that part of Paris? Why not the culture, art, and people?

  43. I've been reading this comment on here quite a bit, so I took special care last night to pay attention to what was going on with the props (books/ benches and ladders). Honestly, they were creatively used throughout the show. Some of the best use of props I saw last night. Why is there no complaining about SCV's Tesla coils that just sit on the perimeter for much of the show? I have no problem with them personally, and I think they're used effectively. However, they are not nearly as well-integrated as BD's props. As Alton Brown would say, they are mono-taskers, whereas BD's props are multi-taskers. Also, about the penalty thing, what would they be assessed a penalty for? Do they leave a mess on the field after their show for another corps to deal with? I didn't see that. I'm assuming you mean that. Otherwise, your comment is quite silly.

  45. Sorry Cappy. But the judges only get it right when my corps wins. When my corps loses than we need to get new judges, oh wait we did get some new judges this year and we are still complaining lol.

  46. Visual Proficiency is essentially an execution caption in the Visual show. ( as opposed to the Show Design captions like GE ). Its how the marchers execute the visual moves provided to them. Things like technique, proper ( or improper ) spacing, intervals, cover, uniformity, feet, body, instrument positioning ( not as vital anymore ) arriving at position in proper timing, and at exact spot required under the design, proper head of body positioning as required,,.. if the visual routine in a set calls for it, there needs to be complete uniformity in the execution of the set, instruments need to come up and down in complete harmony and uniformity if the drill calls for it ( BD excels in this most years, imo). If the Corps is required to be running, they need to be in uniform step during the running ( its still on the sheets, but lots of even the top Corps show out of steps in the running in my observations ), there should be no " drifting " in movements from one set to the other, ie if it calls for straight marching, the marcher should not wobble in movement from left to right in getting into the position. Once a marcher hits a definate spot, they are not to move unless the visual calls for it. When the visual calls for individual ad libbing by MM's, once that sequence ends, they must return efficiently and uniformly in complete harmony with the others and then into that next required sequence. Corps have different techniques in marching style, ie heel to toe, more pronounced with SCV, than right foot step offs with Cadets, and so forth. These are fine, provided there is uniformity in its execution. What separates the top performing Corps in this caption with lower executing corps in this caption, is the easily noticeable difference in the improper variance in the spacing intervals, the already mentioned incorrect " drifting " by some MM's, and the improper, non uniformity in the feet movements between the MM's the, improper cover in the lines, the improper distance between sections in these lines, the improper spacing irregularities between MM's, the non uniform use of arms, hands, instrument positioning etc. and so forth by the individual MM's. I could mention quite a few other more subtle things the Vis. Prof. judges are looking at, but these are the most common ones anyway.
