  1. It's also possible for a non profit to own for-profit subsidiary company. I worked for a non-profit that spun off a business unit as for-profit, but still wholly owned the subsidiary.

  2. Possible, yes, but the unrelated business income to the non-profit can't raise any "tax evasion" flags. It's tricky to structure, but certainly possible.

  4. I don't see this as any different than running bingo, selling raffle tickets, or gaining income from running clinics. Non profit doesn't mean non income. These organizations run on multi million dollar budgets. That money has to come from somewhere. I applaud BD for coming up with new innovative ways of supporting their activities. By the way, I believe their dues towards their members are among the lowest in DCI. Now that System Blue is its own entity I don't know how that will impact the situation at Blue Devils. It probably won't. BD rarely enters into anything without a healthy understanding of the impacts of those activities. Dan

  5. I am shaking Tekk lol.Report away xan.....LOL About time that someone (beside a few here that do) get on this self proclaimed know it all. I actually find him amusing in his ignorance when he thinks he knows everything. But go after a guy that tried to make one of the best drum corps and did not make it THIS YEAR. Well now you will get my oldcadetsop (who missed the cut my first time) on you.

  6. As usual... and this goes for not only the Cadets, but any other corps.... none of us will have any firm, definitive idea of what a show sounds like or looks like until the show is put on the competition field in June. So... see you then.

  8. I still say that other than Madison or Arrowhead... Bloomington was BY FAR a PERFECT "stadium" for finals.... The only reasson I don't say a perfect "venue" is due to the lack of hotels and other stuff to do... But it's really hard to disagree with a WALL of people!

  9. I'm sure this is not the only reason but, if you were considering buying new equipment for your musical group, would you buy it from a NFP? As a for-profit, SB can negotiate deals, enter into contracts and, generally, do business in a way that BDPA can't, and/or maybe shouldn't. Call me Schultz.

  10. And why do I feel like we are about to go explaining that "non-profits" can make a profit for the 100th time? (to others. Obviously not to you garfield.) Couldn't System Blue still be a part of the BDPA 501c3, not a separate Corp, and simply be serving support, financial and otherwise, to the BDPA Service Programs (BDA, BDB, BDC, Diablo Wind Symphony)?

  16. Man, I lurk here, but have to chime in on this. xanndal or whatever you hide behind, that comment to screamer was rude. For someone as you say to be older and "know"? everything. Do us a favor and STFU. Screamer, keep going for it dude! Do not let idiots like him change what your goal is. Best to you screamer, Marc FHNSAB

  18. Now you are hamming it up. You are correct about the feathered head pieces, they were full each appearing to be the chief. I first learned of them by watching the Pasadena New Year's Rose Parade where the corps was "marching" and evading that wintery stuff in the Twin Cities.

  25. I had a chance to see The Guardians at their January Camp. I was VERY impressed. They are not at all the corps they were before. The staff is pushing them hard and they sounded like a big boy corps. The Drumline is going to be HOT for sure. I bet they will turn some heads this year.

  26. Minnesota Brass continues its proud association with System Blue. System Blue has been an integral part of Minnesota Brass' ownership of the DCI Minnesota Regional competition since its inception. It's good to see the two organizations expanding their affiliation!

  27. By some standards you might consider the jobs I've had to be "good" ones: Tank commander - US Army Assistant Booking Agent - William Morris Agency Performing musician/arranger/corps instructor/DCI adjudicator High School band director Audio Producer College professor You will notice there are lots of them, some of which overlapped, all of which had something to do with my drum corps experience (even the tank), none of which make you rich, necessarily, all of which demanded skills I learned and refined in drum corps. It will be necessary to make allies of your parents in your quest. First things first: do well (not "good") in school. Your ability to set and meet educational goals and standards is the same skill you will need in drum corps. You must demonstrate that right now, in your current situation. When the prominent corps come to your area, bring your parents to a REHEARSAL. That will inform them far better than watching a video or even a live performance. Everyone here wishes you well.

  31. I wouldn't get carried away with rumors, etc. I'm sure people have heard all kinds of things, but I'm also sure there is more to the story than what gets reported. Despite the constant rumors of GH being a rather feisty guy, and quite picky about certain things, the Cadets have been very well run for decades. Amidst disagreements and arguments and occasional staff changes, the corps survives and continues to perform brilliantly. Change is bound to happen, even when it's not a pretty change. I've always said that competitive drum corps can be a volatile activity where opinions and methods get tested and ruffled over the course of a season. Instructors have egos. Caption heads have egos. Techs have egos. Directors have egos. Fans and alumni have egos. Imagine trying to keep all of that together, happy, and in the pursuit of excellence every year, no matter the score or placement? Not to mention all the fund raising and admin work that needs to be done. This is why many directors have left corps, or been let go. It's why some corps have folded or lost key staff and alumni. There is nothing easy about running a modern American drum & bugle corps.
