  1. Hear hear, well said. Can we all agree that hearing "America the Beautiful," or the national anthem, or anything, played badly by a poorly coordinated, ill-rehearsed group is not a good thing?

  4. It was. Brian and Keith, what you said earlier about Marion... I agree. That town really rolled out the red carpet for the corps at the U.S. Open. Great atmosphere for that event. In 1971 for the Open, we were housed at a local college... and like George said earlier, the food at the cafeteria there was great!!! We didn't even come close to making Finals, but we certainly ate well. The World Open in Lynn MA.... the Manning Bowl. One of those stadiums that was not exactly a state-of-the-art venue...LOL... but there was something about the place that was just magic. Same with Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ... longtime home of the National Dream contest. To be honest, the stadium was a run-down dump... an accident waiting to happen. But there was no better place to be than at the Dream on a hot summer Sunday afternoon. IMO, the most unique contest in the history of drum corps. I was privileged to both attend that show as a fan, and to march there with DCA's Sunrisers.

  7. Seeing shows for the first time is always fun, ESPECIALLY if the following is true: 1) It's a REALLY good show. 2) You've seen absolutely nothing of it before hand. I know getting to see stuff preseason is good, but seeing Bluecoats the first time in 2014 and 2015 in the cine-cast was absolutely enthralling when I didn't know what laid ahead. First hit of 2015 even just in the theatre had me absolutely enthralled, HUGE goosebumps. Same with the pitch bend in 2014.

  8. So... since I'm the emcee for this Spring Preview concert, I'll be sidestage during the performances, but there is no water cooler. LOL.

  9. Man... the stuff we pulled back in the day. LOL. One of my last years with Sun... 1981, '82, not sure which... the Cabs' indoor show was at William Patterson College. Great venue... the seating area sloped up and away from the stage, putting the fans up close to the action. Anyhow.... my French horn comrade Marty Roche and I were on the end of one of the lines our horn line formed in our stage setup... and during the drum solo, the horns moved sidestage to give the audience a better look at the percussion section. Horns went to parade rest, in view of the audience... but Marty and I realized that the two of us were so far sidestage that we were behind the curtain and no one in the audience could see us!!! So... he and I took advantage of that and took a brief break, grabbing a drink from the water cooler backstage and chatting with the show's emcee (I think it was George DelMonte). Then... drum solo was over, and it was back to the end of the line for us and back on the stage. LOL. Believe me, we got a few strange looks from some of the other horn players when we rejoined the ranks.

  10. Fusion Core is pleased to announce it will be expanding its drum corps experience to include an alternative to the field corp. Core Lite will offer those individuals who are horn players and percussionists the opportunity to be a part of a world class organization and represent Fusion at the DCA Mini-Corps competition in Rochester, NY as well as parades and corporate events throughout the year. Core Lite will operate as an extension of the Core providing entertaining and unique mass appeal drum corps to our fans but in a different genre. Core Lites educational staff will consist of Alex Prince (Brass Co-Caption Head), Bo Parks (Co-Caption Head), Chris Kilian (Brass Arranger) and Mike Schmidt (Percussion Arranger and Caption Head). These music educators will support the outstanding values and musical techniques of Fusion Core and provide an outstanding experience for all who choose to participate. Musical selections and membership details will be announced at open house. Open House is this Friday March 4th at St.Gabries Church, 153 Milton Road,Oak Ridge, NJ from 8PM-10PM. 12. >>Then the "Round Robin" aspect gradually went away... but the Cabs continued to host their indoor Grand Prix through the early 1990s. Heh... one year... 1990, I think.... it was held on Kentucky Derby day.... and I made sure I was near a TV at post time, about an hour before the show started!!! << Truth be told ... in 73 a bunch of us and the wives went to dinner in Brooklyn at Lundy's ... PANDEMONIUM at its best! ... needless to say, we missed our onstage performance (to the wives' delight) ... but, made that after-party (to the wives' dismay) ... a few weeks later, we were onstage at Hawthorne's show and missing some soloists for our color pre (DeFig & Guarino) ... as the song was being played (subpar), Winky saw them in the back of the auditorium and cold-stopped the corps ... invited them onto the stage and announced to the crowd: "now we'll play it the way it was meant to be played" ... restarted everything from the drum solo and viola ... SUCCESS!!! :-)

  17. Did they win by alot? Yes, the answer does make a difference. Also had they been in a regional before this? When you also say the class they usually compete in. Is that locally you mean? That also can make a big difference.

  22. What is this "rumps" you speak of? Guess you'll just have to come to a show or follow us on facebook or stop by a practice to find out. All kidding aside it's the perfect show for a Caballeros fan and the reason why this year is because all our designers Andy Yozviak, Duane Dewire, Marc Garside, Bobbey Biddle and Matt Hurley all grew up as great fans of the corps so they were excited to design a show that as fans themselves, they would enjoy. I know everyone says this about their corps but I promise you that you will love the Caballeros this year.

  26. Waking up from punctuation is always traumatic. That said, drum corps is not teaching members that America stinks. Drum corps is comprised of the best youth America has to offer. Personally, as much as I loved the medley, I don't think playing a piece of music or listening to it is going to help anyone love their country more or less than they already do or don't love it. Referring to members in the 90s not seeing the performance of the medley as a "burden to honor America" is a slap to the face to current members, suggesting those today think it's a burden to honor America. There is nothing unpatriotic about doing something different with that time. We didn't have the medley for most of DCI's early decades and we were no less patriotic than those who came after us. You're more than welcomed to start a petition. That's how fans got the DCI BOD to eliminate amplification and electronics once the rules legalizing each were implemented, and that's why drum corps today is totally acoustic. (Or did I miss something while I was too busy blogging?)
