  4. This is why I miss the On-Demand what DCI use to have. I would watch years and years worth of drum corps shows. Now it's all gone. Alternatives are always WGI Guard and Percussion. But they don't start until Jan. There is always college bands performing at half times. But they don't even show that on TV anymore.

  9. "Can someone explain how we went from symmetrical drill to not?" hmmmm......I think it was something like drill writers wrote symmetrical drills, and then they did not. Does that help?

  10. It seeeems like there's a big dead space in this time of year. Granted it's very much so the off-season, and the off-season was very exciting for the first little bit with the staff shufflings around. But some organizations similar to DCI, such as NBA or NFL (yes I know those examples are on a much higher scale), have found ways to keep their fans engaged all throughout the offseason. So my question(s) is (are), is there a way to keep the engagement up during this dead time in between the end of the season and preseason activities/announcements? If there is a way, is this even a problem that needs fixing?

  11. People have been saying they'll flop every year since 2014 and come out with a dud the next year. Not saying it won't happen, but it's the same prediction every year. I'd hardly put 2015 in the same vein as Carolina Crown in 2010, I think you could make an argument for 2015 definitely being a championship caliber show. (Bias alert 2015 is actually my favorite Bluecoats show above 2016).

  12. Saw the Lancers at the CYO Nationals in 1979, and was struck by all the "rotating form" stuff they did. A forerunner of things to come. The Yankee Rebels first performed their "Requiem for an Era" production in 1969. The split corps and multiple tempos... an idea years ahead of its time. I've had a chance to chat a few times with their main marching instructor that year.... he's told me at the post-show critique at a few shows, judges would admit they didn't quite know how to judge what they were seeing, and hearing, during "Requiem".... based on the scoresheets in use at that time.

  15. If one wants all 12 corps, $120 for the Blu-Ray is $60 less than 12 individual corps. After a year or so, it goes down some more.

  17. Unfortunately it's not that clear cut. Changes input in the 1980 season extended beyond the concert piece. They even made a change to the key of Procession of the Nobles as per a comment from a judge.

  18. Th opener (Procession of the Nobles), drum solo (SG7) & Closer (Juipter) were great. The Evita medley was a mess - that is why they ended up 7th.

  21. Years back DCI did the classic countdowns, and had theater events showcasing classic shows. This was a way to keep things going a bit during the off-season, but I think it wasn't profitable enough to continue.

  23. Yes, but not drum corps. Seriously.... other than checking out DCP or FB from time to time... for me, it's college football season. When that's done, it's other stuff. LOL. Then drum corps around April or so.

  31. I've a talkative office so on go the headphones again. Lately it's been Henry V movie CD, composer Patrick Doyle and Philip Glass 3 disc CD (thanks to drum corps for introducing me to these composers). In the 1970's and 1980's I'd buy an album after I heard drum corps play it. I learned about music from drum corps. I like this thread "Music Corps Should Do". I learn music again. Thank you...edit: this inspires me at work;)

  32. Cavaliers' 1987 show opened with Claude T. Smith's "Festival Variations," a work commissioned by Arnold Gabriel and the U.S. Air Force Band. It was chock full of runs and tricky rhythms, with the corps played in the early season. Then the fire hose came out and the piece got watered down to the point that it was in danger of floating away. The corps members took to calling the final version "Festival Dilutions."

  38. Just thought I'd post this. Texas Color Guard Circuit, East Championships Hopson Field House, Missouri City TX March 19, 2016 "My Affliction" Music: Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots 3rd place, White Round (13 guards) 5th place over all (39 guards) So proud of these kids. They took on a very mature subject and just ran with it. It was written specifically with members of our guard in mind who all suffered from or still are suffering from some form of mental disorder. That includes the guard captain who happens to be my daughter, (anxiety and self harm). She goes into every performance knowing she has a 99% chance of having a major attack and seizures after the performance is over, yet she is always rock solid! We also have a couple kids with autism in the guard and it was amazing to watch their growth over the season. Including the young man on the rifle who, up until December, had never touched one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HINJuJvkHJo (Before anyone questions video copyright procedure, we have the permission from Twenty Pilots, their management, and label to post the video)
