  2. Hi - I am the Corps Manager for Cadence Drum & Bugle Corps from the UK. We are in early discussions with DCA about attending the 2018 Championships in Williamsport, PA. Our initial plan is to compete in the A Class competition so its great to see that this class is growing year on year within DCA. Like many of the current A Class units we are the result of a rebuilding process, here is a brief history of the Corps: Cadence were formed in 1991 from a merger of the Caversham Boys Brigade Band and a local Drum Corps called Starisers. They achieved moderate success and were crowned DCUK A class champions in 1996. In 1997 a further merger with the Raiders from Surrey took place (my original Corps) and Cadence then entered the Open Class competition in 1997 achieving 5th place in finals. Our style has always been based around classical and symphonic music and in 1999 Cadence were DCUK Open Class Champions playing Festive Overture and Symphony No5 by Shostakovich with assistance from Jeff Wrobleski from the USA. The Corps continued to compete at the top level of DCUK over the next six years playing mostly classical music coming 2nd another five times. Sadly by 2005 the constant pursuit of another Championship led to a drop in members numbers and "burn out" amongst several staff. The Corps became inactive that Spring. We were very lucky to have a healthy B Corps which immediately became the main corps and we started from scratch entering the cadet class competition in 2009. Over the past 7 years we have slowly climbed the rankings and have been placed 3rd at the past two DCUK Finals and 9th at the past two Drum Corps Europe Competition Finals in Holland. Many of our members have been with Cadence since they were 10 years old which has given us a great nucleus of vets in the Corps. As weekend only Corps we are very much aligned with the all age Corps in the USA and taking a tour to the states was the next logical step which we have now announced and the planning has started to make this dream happen for our kids and adults who march with us. Although we are not a t the standard of our good friends Kidsgrove Scouts who are coming over for the 4th time this Summer, we still hope we can bring our little Corps to the USA and give you guys another taste of the UK Drum Corps activity. We will post updates on our plans and progress via our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Cadencedrumcorps/ Hopefully the A Class will be just as healthy come 2018. Regards Paul

  3. 1. My son's first year in DCI, marching with the Cavaliers. 2. Two shows this summer that are within 5 miles of my house, with Cavaliers marching in both of them! A hand-delivered bonus thanks to the DCI South move this year. 3. Keeping tabs on Atlanta CV in their 20th Anniversary Season in DCA. My son marched the last two years with them ( Euphonium soloist last year) and that crew is now like family to us! 4. Opening night in the theater. 5. My first trip to Lucas Oil Stadium to see Semifinals and Finals. 6. Hopefully a week-long stint on the road with Cavies as a volunteer with my wife. We're trying to work that out now. 7. Taking our kid off the field in Indy and getting him straight to Jacksonville State University where he's starting his freshman year, and will be a few days late for Freshman Band Camp. 8. Relaxing when it's all over.

  10. The Boston Crusaders brass and percussion assembled at Lakewood Ranch, FL this past weekend and continued the intense 2017 preparation. The commitment of the members and staff with the steady camp preparation was obvious. Attendance was excellent for the brass with over 70 in attendance and fierce competition for single mellophone and baritone spots. The […] View the full article

  13. It’s building effect through transitions, impacts and clarity of effect through execution, intent and design. Uniforms need not be involved as long as they don’t inhibit the performer or negate the effect but they can help the effect too

  14. That’s a bad example as Regiment 2014 incorporated their changing uniform into the drill as part of the effect. Their 2011 and 2012 uniform were basically the same for the corps proper (crest changed for coin) while their themes were vastly different and I don’t think either really came into play much with their score In the old days, shows didn’t have themes (for the most part) so GE was based upon execution and being written into the drill or the guard, it was also tick based. Look at some of the old reps, often corps used the same uniforms, same songs, dill maneuvers and even the same flag, year after year. Their corps identity was their only theme. Occasionally, the guard may have made a nod to a song with some sort of accessory. Regiment 81 is about the first time I recall the entire corps altering their uniform to a show theme

  15. I don't know if this has anything to do with BK's uniform for their DCI season this year, but this appears to be their uniform for their Bahrain trip next month.

  16. Man, GE is complicated. But I'm glad it's there. If GE weren't a thing, BD would have about 10 more championships under their belt.

  17. With a member now sleeping here finishing his last year of high school, he seems to think it will be late April. But he's a rookie, so he could be very confused. :-) So, I commented, but I'm not sure I added much more information to the topic. What I can confirm is that their next camp is April 28th, so perhaps we will hear about Theme at or right after that point.

  19. I'll trade ya! (from today's NWS forecast): "Severe thunderstorms will likely develop over portions of Texas and Oklahoma this afternoon into tonight. Very large hail, destructive winds, isolated tornadoes, and heavy downpours will be the main threats. Heavy rain could lead to localized flash flooding concerns." The DFW area got baseball sized hail a couple of days ago. San Antonio had some last spring. (Local roofing companies still haven't caught up with the back log.) Last year, one of my coworkers had her two week old car totaled by hail. Last month our house was hit by lightning, which blew out a TV and PS4 among other things. (As I was checking up in the attic to make sure there wasn't a fire, our cell phone alerts kicked in for the tornado warning. Once I got downstairs I could hear the #### thing going by...) I'll trade some fluffy white stuff for all the crazy we've lately. (Just a little, though.) Anyways, I think one of those predicted 35 mph wind gusts just made one of our trash cans head down the street, gotta go track it down.... :)

  20. Selling it. Arguably, this was the most "theatrical" part of the activity. I used to give this example to explain GE: Let's say there's a part in the show where the horn line is supposed to be ducks. The music judge will ask himself "Well, did they sound like ducks?" The visual judge will ask himself "Well, did they move like ducks?" The GE judge will ask himself "Well, did they really make me believe they were ducks?" Using that same mentality now, I imagine the GE judge now would have to think "Well, did they really make me believe they were ducks? The duck costumes definitely helped." Same as if you were to take a theater class. Wearing a duck costume is definitely going to help the audience understand that you're a duck, but a talented enough actor could definitely make you understand that he's supposed to be a duck without wearing feathers and a beak.

  26. Hopefully Phantom can get out of the metaphorical "pit" they've gotten themselves into post-2012. Like many other corps, Phantom has had eras of success followed by relatively low scores, then followed up by more success. Here's a very scientific graph I made in MS Paint illustrating Phantom's success: http://imgur.com/a/XOwrP Blue Devils' success on the other hand...: http://imgur.com/a/IRdGw

  28. Euphonium. After I got cut as drum major, I sent in a video audition for a euphonium spot (they had only Bari/euph and tuba spots available at the time. My primary instrument is trumpet) and got a contract.

  29. I am looking forward to the end of the DCP debates about who is releasing show information and when and what kinds of unis or costumes are being worn. Then we can move on to critiquing (sic criticizing mostly) all the shows and unis. Yay! Honestly though, I am looking forward to some very creative programs and close competition.

  31. And don't forget I-15 also has higher speed limits. (I think only UT and TX have stretches of highways that allow 85 MPH.) But those on two wheels just love the thousands of miles of twisty back roads. There are probably more ATV's out here then MC with all the off road trails.

  32. Realistically, how long can a corps last claiming each season will be an inaugural Open Class season, convincing members and staff to buy in, and then being denied the Open Class spot, and having to scrounge a season of limited SoundSport events and a few potential exhibitions? It's hard to recruit for drum corps as it is, then recruiting for something that isn't a sure thing is even harder. You can recruit for SoundSport. You can recruit for Open. Recruiting for Open and delivering SoundSport really misses the bar on member and staff experience, especially in areas with established DCI Open and World corps, DCA corps, and SoundSport teams within a reasonable drive. The process should not be voted on in April. It should be done in September before serious recruiting even begins. Anything else is a huge disservice to members, staff, admin, and volunteers

  33. Referring to OP (and others), the point was that Surf should NOT be scoring as low as they are. So maybe points are not necessarily indicative of who should and who should not be in the WC. By the way, the biggest high school recruitment strategy - US Bands, owned by the Cadets. You can bet that they market themselves at every competition mercilessly, even bringing out MMs in full uniform to give out trophies (one of which is a Cadets shako - our HS band has one).

  34. As a parent to a returning Surf MM, I can report that the corps has alot more MMs coming back this year, so hopefully that will provide some more backbone. The show is shaping up to be really interesting and more challenging than in years past. Surf does start later than most corps (though by the time of move ins, they are rehearsing every weekend). They had one free day last summer (San Antonio) and a few laundry half days - that's it. They also have a small budget, which impacts general effect - no big ramps or annual uniform changes here. But, they do have the best food in DCI! My MM claims that the open class corps tend to score better at finals because they are judged all summer on a different scale, so when they get to finals they are competing on a blank slate. The MMs definitely wish they were scoring higher and not making semis last year was pretty hard on them. I don't think the show, though pretty good, resonated. Stay tuned for this year - definitely more contemporary.

  35. That's usually the best part about coming back "home". Sometimes, even if you do not have your own family attending the shows, the alum usually make a marcher feel like his or her family is there. I've always looked forward to the home shows at Cadets specifically for that reason.

  36. I've attended shows hosted by Cadets and have sat in Cadet blocks in Atlanta and Allentown and I will have to say the loyalty and love of the corps is palpable. There were a few alums in Allentown who were less than thrilled about uniform changes in 2015 and made their feelings known, but even then there was love for the corps. Part of it is probably the drum corps experience. I am a die hard fan and I know my history, stats, repertoires, etc better than more than a few who marched, but I never marched so I do not know the joys and disappointments of DCI competition, what it is like to be in finals, the tour experience, or the lifelong bond. As an outsider looking in, it has to create a certain sentiment that cannot be matched or taken away. It also has to be nurtured. In 2012 I attended the last TOC show Cadets hosted at MetLife Stadium. There was a two hour rain delay and I was probably the only non Cadet in the section where I waited for the rain to stop. No one cared that the show was delayed. It was like a family reunion. Volunteers were also walking around, asking people to be patient, and thanked them for attending the show. One asked when I when I marched, and when I said I never marched, I was asked what my favorite Cadets show was (1980) and was introduced to someone who marched that year. If I had been a Cadet who had been away for a while, I would have been reconnected with the corps. Perhaps I would have been hit up for a donation too, but that's another story. I know Boston Crusaders does an excellent job at connecting alums and marching members and works at making everyone feel like family at home shows. When Madison celebrated 75 years in 2013 and alums stood up in Indy and sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" it was amazing. Cavies seems to have this loyalty as well. In short, I think the experience creates the bond and loyalty, but often it is nurtured by the corps.

  37. I don't think Dave was trying to say the Cadets are better than other corps/organizations. I think he was just talking about The Cadets and our history/loyalty. I'm sure the Scouts, BAC, Cavies, and young corps like SCV, BD,(j/k) etc...are pretty much the same in that regard.
