  1. Against this entirely. Shows would not become more appealing or musically better by cramming more bodies onto what is already a very crowded field. Then you add exponentially more cost, not just in buses but food, Insurance and management. Its also undeniable that the older and more experienced members would always gravitate to the top six corps. This is why the NCAA adopted hard roster limits for all scholarship sports. Bigger name schools with more resources would just sign kids to stand on the sideline to keep them from competing with them at another school.

  2. they'll only be able to do this shows in certain stadiums. Lucas Oil is NFL so that means they'd have to be kneeling. So sad on Veterans Day. RIP all in my family who never came home and those who were fortunate to come home safely.

  3. I like the fact that I get the MBA/BOA stuff as part of the subscription, I hadn’t watched marching bands in many years. Their sound and video aren’t that great at FLO, but I can deal with it

  4. I live by the axiom coined by Ronald Reagan: "Trust, ... but varify!" So it is not that I have no trust, it is just that DCI is not releasing any varifiable information to support that trust.

  5. Well you can hear the crickets after requesting the document. Some amazing stories being told on Reddit. Not a one mentions a DCI policy enforcement.

  6. "Why do you rob banks?" "That's where the money is." Actually, as a more serious answer, I believe much of it has to do with the trends in hiring teachers/instructors who are not yet old enough to (a) make mature decisions, or (b) view themselves as sufficient removed from the student population on order not to view them as natural and potential mates.

  7. Before I get started, I wanted to give credit where credit is due. Mingusmonk, and later Liahona, started providing show song titles and source music some time ago. We all truly appreciated it. We loaded up that thread with comments and it is a "pinned" thread each year. I was unable to use the Spotify links he originally provided in my office due to it being blocked for streaming. I took to my own this year and started setting up on YouTube with a similar break-out of source music. THANK YOU MINGUSMONK & LIAHONA!!!!! I have been missing the music since the end of the season and decided to take on a new task of my own. As of this morning, all source music for DCI Finalist shows from 1979-2017 are available as a “playlist” on YouTube and are public for you to listen to at your leisure. I figure you can choose a year and set it on random. That provides you almost a whole work day of music in the office. I can't promise that I got every title correct and if you spot an error, please message me and I will fix it. Here's how it works: Choose a year and add it to the end of "Drum Corps" and you will have your year. Example "Drum Corps 1979" I hope you all enjoy and I look forward to seeing many of you again this coming season. UPDATE: I'm glad to see many of you are enjoying the source music playlists I have created on YouTube. What has surprised me is the years that you have been listening to/watching. The top two were obvious since I had mentioned them during the season. However, the rest of the Top 10 years show a different story. The bottom 2 were even more shocking. 1) 2017 - 4,305 views 2) 2016 - 366 views 3) 1980 - 217 views 4) 1979 - 160 views 5) 1982 - 93 views 6) 1981 - 87 views 7) 2008 - 69 views 8) 1978 - 61 views 9) 2009 - 49 views (Another DCI Tie, really?!?) 9) 2013 - 49 views (Another DCI Tie, really?!?) BOTTOM 2 with no views 1973 & 2006 So what is your favorite year of the source music?

  8. True enough. As a matter of fact, we all here know a Corps with non FE that had a entire section in their Corps not move 5 yards in either direction the entire show performance... and that Corps had 155 in the summer's show. That said, its clear that there is little support here on DCP to expand beyond the current 155... and more importantly, there is little to no sentiment among the Corps themselves to even begin to consider expanding beyond 155, let alone secure enough votes to do so. The reason expansion to beyond 155 is not up for consideration... by even the so called "TOP " Corps... is because more than one of them is having trouble trying to come up with the money to finance 155 performers for the summer competition tours, let alone 200 or more of them. So this is a non starter issue in DCI right from the getgo at the moment it would appear.

  13. Agree George, all of those and plenty more. It’s truly amazing that another 5-10 bands didn’t make it. Wow. Again, I’m impressed.

  14. Currently, the downtown Indy eateries are full to capacity with long lines, as semi finals are done, the stadium cleared, and the doors have reopened for finals. Such a tight schedule! At Pie Five pizzaria on Washington, the kitchen has run out of marinara sauce!

  15. BA has moments this year which rival top 12 DCI - they have a music hit about 3 minutes in that is fricking amazing Here it is in standstill Avon is amazing this year - the last two minutes "this is our testament" The fantastic message of Jay Webb is brilliantly woven into their 2017 program

  16. I agree, there are lots of things going on that “purists” will hate, but for entertainment value most of the bands are doing a great job. The use of voice and sound clips still bugs me, but it’s no big deal

  17. If this thread stays in the DCI WC section it says 'a lot' about Drum Corps and Bands being synonymous. Just saying.

  18. again...it depends on the time frame mentioned there versus when DCi actually put the policy in place....which no one would confirm the actual date

  19. For those worrying whether frostbite will inhibit Junior from having a great audition, here's the game plan for today's band championships earlier today in the stadium before Cadets begin at 5 pm.. ( Info gleaned from corps website, GH vids, and volunteered sources.) https://yea.org/news/1873-usbands-cold-weather-action-plan Cadets will use the heated indoor lounges, club rooms, and conference rooms for tonight's rehearsal with Brass in the Toyota conference suite. Guard will use the heated tunnels tonight for tosses and other heated rooms for movement. Ditto with the percussion dudes and dudettes. Tomorrow guard will be at a local high school. Temps tomorrow for outdoor drill block around lunchtime are slated to be 48-52 degrees. And then there is next camp in Houston, Texas. Fear not oh faithful fans of Cadets. FHNSAB...

  20. These high school units that are larger than 150, would they be larger than 150 if you don't count the woodwinds?

  21. the costs far outweigh what dues would bring. You're adding another bus, so ad in those fees, plus fuel fees. Then increase the cost of insurance. Then increase the cost of food. Then increase the cost of housing. Then increase the cost of equipment and staff. And uniforms. and more vehicles to haul staff, equipment and uniforms, which also increase food, fuel, and insurance. Oh then you need more bodies to run the back end of things, which increases all of the above. compared to increases in dues brought in. No way it breaks close to even. Then you have to jack up what sponsors pay to run shows, which in turn jack up ticket prices. Despite whatever Wall Street posts at the end of the day, the average persons salary isnt increasing like expenses are.

  22. i asked for it, but havent seen it. I think after posting the G7 document, people are hesitant to give me stuff LOL. but the folks i have talked to, despite who some thing they are, have yet to lead me astray, going back to the G7 crisis. And a lot of the stuff that supposed to be oin this policy manual apparently started being worked on after the G7 broke...a way to get everything in place and on paper. I know the circuit i work for had rules and bylaws, but within the last few years, we also fine tuned a policy manual that very clear in spelling things out, even if it really means little to the world at large. We don't go advertising it, but it's there. I'll be honest....not everything a circuit does or has in place is need to know for all.

  25. Has anyone actually seen, read or have a copy of this so called DCI policy, or is it tucked away in one of Al Capone’s faults to be discovered at a later date?

  27. There were many "championships" and champions in those days. One I recall very clearly was the 1970 Miami show. While warming up the Garfield horn line, I kept hearing some pretty fine sounds from just out of sight around the other side of the stadium. When we finished I began to walk in that direction and the sound just got better and better. It was a corps from Kansas I had never even heard of, the Argonne Rebels! And half the horn line seemed to be populated by 12 year-old girls! When I finally got around in front of them the drum major gave a downbeat and they tore into Barnum and Bailey's like it was raw meat. I was totally gob-smacked. When they finished I asked one of the kids who their horn instructor was. "That lady over there", he replied, "Mrs. Opie." Sandra Opie. She sure took me to school that day. Then, that evening, Boston wailed Mancini's Conquest, complete with young Jimmy Centorino's scorching solo, and I stood on the back sideline as the Troopers blew open the circle while every flashbulb in the universe went off in my face. I get high even now, just thinking about this stuff. The '70s? Yeah. What a trip.

  28. Perhaps, but a local TV station reported about fewer kids playing football, believing it was due to concussions, but the theory was blown out of the water when it was pointed out that more kids are playing lacrosse and rugby and that basketball and hockey coaches prefer soccer as a fall sport because it requires more running and is better for conditioning. More athletic choices, fewer football players. For drum corps, we know cost is a factor, family size could be a factor as well, but I think a wider choice of activities plays a major role too.

  29. Totally disagree. IMO the talent top to bottom has never been better. The corps in 8th...9th...10th...and beyond are absolutely amazing today.
