  1. The copyright holder of Les Mis will not allow us to sync the video....DCI and Pio did everything correctly and by the book for permissions....this is an issue with the composers.... We are working on a solution...

  3. his feedback i am sure would be incredible.i know of a few judges that give incredible tapes, and couldn't manage numbers to save their life. Judging is an artform of it's own.......you have to rank, rate, and give good feedback, and in a situation where you have to have a critique, you have to be able to explain why your ranking and rating was what it was, as well as offer constructive feedback on how to improve without getting caught up in the "but you gave so and so...." or "what do we do to catch....". I don't judge on a national level, but it ain't easy and i work at it all year. I scrounge for old tapes to gain insights, i ask questions of legends and folks doing it now, and not just those working the sheets I do. Just being a great musician alone doesn't mean you can be a great judge.

  4. If that's the case, when I hit the lottery I'm going to start that all-Hendrix circuit for corps that want to break away and do different stuff.

  5. Where did I say that? Being an amazing performer and being able to look at a group of ensembles and give them a worthwhile evaluation are not the same skillsets. In drum corps terms, add to the mix the different types of shows being presented and it greatly increases the difficulty for someone to just walk in and be expected to give a fair and accurate evaluation of the groups. Add to that the written criteria for judging the captions that has been created by the member corps, and IMO it becomes an impossible task for a virtuoso performer with no background in DCI and/or evaluating other groups in general to accomplish. Wynton Marsalis, given his work with students, as well as his performances in a variety of ensembles from jazz to classical, might actually come close to being able to judge brass in DCI. However, why do you think he would automatically see things different than the DCI judges do today, if using the same criteria for performance? This past season the top 4 brass lines, score-wise, were Crown, BD, SCV and Bluecoats. How different do you think he would place them in brass performance? You really think he would take the 12th place Scouts brass and place them in the top 3 or 4? Do you believe that Crown does not deserve to be 1st in brass, with BD close at their heels?

  6. This is actually really tough. The Cadets are probably one of the few corps that has achieved some of DCI's highest highs as well as its lowest lows in terms of show design. Until recently, however, execution levels have been pretty consistently top-notch no matter what the design. Let's start with the favorites... Oh man, they've put out a lot of really good ones... 1983, the Rocky Point/original Mass show. You cannot make a list of the best (or even your favorite) Cadets shows without mentioning the one that changed the activity forever. It still feels timeless today. 1987, "Appalachian Spring." Another classic, timeless show. While I feel like SCV should have won that year, the Cadets brought something really unique to the field in terms of show design. 1993, "In the Spring..." They were at the top of what I consider to be one of the best Top 3's ever. 1992 was quite beautiful, but 1993 was an absolute powerhouse of a show. Not to mention, one of the best ballads ever. How has no one mentioned them yet? 2000, "We Are the Future." This show had everything: Fast drill, moments of pure beauty, and a wide range of emotions. They also proved that you could have a monster hornline on B-flat horns. 2011, "Between Angels and Demons." Without a doubt the best Cadets show of the decade so far. Honorable mentions: 1990, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2012, 2015. And now for the least favorites (I'll keep all of these short for everyone's safety)... 2008, "...and the pursuit of happiness." Just an overall poorly-conceived show, incredible Sacktig closer drill notwithstanding. 2010, "Toy Souldier." Two words: Little Geoffrey. 2016, "Sto-" I mean, "Awakening." The music wasn't bad, but it was extremely hard to watch the Cadets march a non-Sacktig drill.

  8. I would wonder if there has ever been a time where if there was a show where the top seven from a previous year competed it would not sell out before a show in the same city with 8-15. Unless there is controversy surrounding a corps that places below 6th or 7th, the top performers usually get the most ink and sell tickets. The largest crowd I can remember at a 27th Lancers Invitational was in 1978 with the top six from 1977 competed. The theory of the G7 was somewhat valid as the success of TOC shows has shown. The problems for me was the arrogance and willingness to sell out the other corps and divide DCI, and the belief no one other than the original G7 would be the top 7 forever, something Boston Crusaders and Blue Knights has proven wrong. You are correct that there are some who only want to see the top corps and believe they have to sit through bad corps to get to the best, but this was the case long before the G7.

  11. Faves in no particular order: 84 (gotta give props to the show that beat me) 92 (I AM an Air Force vet, after all) 88...a show FAR too underrated. 11 89 Least: 07....great performance...horrible over-the-top preachiness. 06...bad rehash of 05 with bad singing 17...Lennie is whirling in his grave...last 30 seconds are good musically. 15...Trying a little too hard, Hop? 86...meh

  12. I disagree. Look at who gets the most discussion on here and butts in the seats. If I put a show out there with 5 Top 7 against a show of 8th-15th same night in 2 cities next to each other the top 7 groups would sell first. The lower place finalist groups still play to the less than 3/4 full stands. Ive witnessed posters on this forum say "I dont care about that garabge. Less bad groups I have to watch to get to the good ones."

  15. Thats true. Lots of Corps, not just the Cadets, have had seasons where the marcher talent was good, but the design staff struck out that season. It happens. I've also seen Staff in many Corps over the years give its members a potentially great show, but the MM talent wasn't available to them that season, so the staff regrettably had to water down the demand left and right, do rewrites, etc... to the point the original show design that was given to the Corps was almost unrecognizable from the earlier designed one for them. Its a tough balancing act.

  17. I agree with your least favorites; however, 2007 Cadets was one hell of a drum corps. One of the best I have ever seen. If only they would have been given a better show.

  18. There will be 420, and everyone will be playing Bob Marley shows. This will fulfill the prophecy set forth by George Hopkins prior to the start of the 2016 season.

  19. No changes for me. It was "All Good" too 1968-1976 marched competitive drum corps as guard and DM; non-competing corps 1977-1979 that traveled lots; marched winter guard most years 1968-1977; taught guard 1972-1988; judged a few DC and WG gigs; board director for a winter guard association most years 1979-1988; played cymbals for a few parades in Florida 1979 and learned how to play baritone; watched arrangers write, drummers jam with a baritone that played trombone and more. The experiences, travel and friendships were all good!

  20. Being an amazingly talented musician in any genre does not translate automatically into being able to rank and rate DCI ensembles on whatever caption they are evaluating.

  21. Either 42, because that is the answer to the ultimate question, or 3, because that is the number of licks the owl says it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

  25. Another cool thing to see is 2017 videos are available for download on Marchingmusicdownloads.com now...and they have corps out of the top 12 available, INCLUDING Seattle Cascades who didn't make the CD! Nice, because I liked that show :) Cost is $15 a video though, so if you want all thats available outside the top 12, its gonna be a little expensive.

  26. Agree. I’m impressed. I would have made different choices on the multi camera versions. But just my preferences. First impressions after all 12: A lot of teeth gritting. A lot of sweaty faces and arms. I liked Boston during the season. Maybe enjoyed that show even more on this first video pass. SCV was great. But BD was just awesome. Were either of them telling a story? I don’t care. I get how trombones work. It’s okay to back off of that slide work next year. A lot of MMs look to me like they are 12, and they all work very, very hard. Way hard. Overall first impression, wonderful video and audio.
