  2. I remembered a couple things that were interesting about Fred Sanford and SCV during the 78 season which was an exciting year to march in DCI. Fred was always full of surprises. There was one time when SCV was doing a show in Los Angeles on the campus of USC or UCLA. As the drum line was warming up in preparation for the show, Fred walks up with Neil Diamond and says "Hey guys, I 'd like you to meet a friend of mine." Neil sat down in front of the drum line and we played Lezghinka which was the drum solo Fred arranged from Khachaturian's Gayne Ballet. During the summer tour, he also had the drum line take a tour of the Slingerland factory in Chicago to show us how the drums were constructed. Starting from the various woods, how the shell is curved and plated and the time and effort that goes into crafting each drum as well as the various finishes. Fred the consummate educator. Also, during the 78 season Larry McCormick filmed a drumline training video of SCV with Fred, titled "Building the Section" . At the same time, Larry McCormick also filmed a video featuring Rob Carson who was instructing the snare line. It's interesting to note that Rob was teaching the snare line during the first tour and not marching. One of the snares quit on tour. Since Rob still had one year of eligibility, he marched the 2nd tour and continued to teach as well as winning the individual snare championship that year. That's Ralph Hardimon sitting on the grass next to Rob during the film. Quite a team of instructors that year, Fred Sanford , Ralph Hardimon, Tony Romo and Rob. Larry McCormick and SCV had also filmed a video in 1974 on the campus of the University of Michigan titled "Championship Marching Percussion" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO50Ec5x9Q0 Another interesting fact about SCV and DCI Finals that year is that most of the members of the drum line had never seen the finished show and how the drill integrated with the music. As a matter of fact, it was not until after Prelims in Boulder, Co when Pete Emmons (M&M Drill Design) showed us a high cam video of the entire show that we finally got to see the whole picture and were astounded at how it all fit together. The scores were so close between the top 3 in 78 that Finals night in Mile High Stadium was intense. Phantom and SCV tied in prelims. If I remember correctly Gail Royer and Phantom's director flipped a coin to see who would go on tenth and eleventh, Since BD won the previous year in 77, they went on last. I'm not sure but I think Gail won the toss but elected to go on tenth. Phantom and SCV tied again in Finals but Phantom had a one tenth penalty for a dropped glove. It was a fiercely competitive ending in 78 with BD at a 91.30, Phantom at a 91.45, and SCV at 91.55

  4. I don't know about this one. Alternating brass/percussion in the box leads me to think a corps with one of these captions average and the other much better, might make out when the average section is judged from the box, especially percussion. The box in some stadiums are almost 200 yards from the section being judged.

  5. Vince Macciocchi's name may not be familiar to most readers here, but he was a prime mover in the world of drum corps. Dating back to the 50's, Vince was a driving force within the Canadian Drum Corps activity whose influence spanned from the Jolly Jesters (whose approach preceded the Bridgemen by 20 years) to the Canadian Commanders, quite possibly the single most powerful corps ever to emerge north of the 49th parallel. He was a World Drum Corps Hall of Fame Inductee by virtue of these and other major accomplishments. May his memory be honored by all who are involved in this activity for as long as drum corps itself persists.

  7. Hi everyone, I was doing some research and I made an astonsihing discovery. There are new corps planning on joining DCI's open class, and a LOT of them. Here is a list of the corps: Vessel Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2018 - Orange County, CA https://www.vesseldrumcorps.org Armada Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2018 - Boise, ID http://www.armadacorps.org *Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Albuquerque, NM https://arsenalperformingarts.org Encorps Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Brunswick, NJ http://jamwithencorps.org Rivermen Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Portland, OR https://oregonpaa.weebly.com/therivermen.html Appalachian Sound Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Atlanta, GA http://mayde-inc.org/appalachiansound/ Appalachian Gold Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Summersville, WV https://www.appalachiangold.org Hub City Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Houston, TX https://www.hubcityguardians.org Lone Star Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Fort Worth, TX http://www.lonestardbc.org Storm Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2020 - Terre Haute, IN http://indianastorm.net Florida Xpress Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2020 - Hawthorne, FL http://www.thefloridaxpress.org/drum--bugle-corps.html All these corps are going to contribute to the growth of DCI. As of right now, from what I know, these corps are determined to enter open class by the years that they have set. If these 11 corps are successful in joining DCI's open class, there will be a total of 57 corps competing in DCI competitions by 2020. I have listed all the corps websites and I urge you all to visit them and learn more about the organizations that will be a part of drum corps future! If you know any other organizations that are planning on joining DCI's Open Class within the next 3 years, please post them below and I will add them to the list above! *Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps believes that maybe World Class has room in it for another corps from the Southwest. : )

  10. You copied a picture from a dark rehearsal with no costume (you know, the corps-proper in almost entirely white) . I passed on it when you replied. But I was just going through a new album of Gareth Skipp's photos at Finals and I wasn't exactly getting "dark" from these. Or lacking joy. So I thought I would share. Also, to help out in understanding the color scheme of the stage, the black isn't providing darkness to any theme. It serves to make the whiteness of the center line more crisp and even brighter. The contrast is key. Also, also ... show me color guard that had brighter flags and rifles that Bluecoats 2017 (one well-evidenced in your rehearsal photo).

  11. The snow is blowing sideways and soon we'll have unbelievable cold. High of 6 this weekend and a low of -10 or lower. Not including wind chill. C'mon summer. At the coast in NH there are mini icebergs pushing up on to the beaches and roads. Same in Mass. I'm sure.

  12. With the winter meetings starting tomorrow, I decided to update my stances on the rules proposals at hand. This is still fine. Again, not a huge increase, and the fact that many corps already have alternates at the ready to achieve this makes it reasonable. I would be wary about any future increases, however - but then again, with so many new corps applying for DCI competition within the next couple of years, they may not really need to do so for a while. I still hold the same stance on this; maybe in a decade or so (when we could have upwards of 50 corps performing at Prelims) it would make more sense, but for now,, I'd say it's not a good idea. Plus, Cesario said they would have to compromise the USMC performance if this were to pass... No. I still don't think these should pass, but if anything has changed, it's that #3 may make more sense than I had originally thought. Still, I think early-season crowds (especially those out west) deserve to see a competition. I would suggest allowing the judges to score the corps but only release the placements during this time, but that brings back the problem of recaps leaking left and right, which is what happened in 2016 when DCI tried to hold judges accountable by hiding the recaps. As for Hop's proposal, yeah, this one still hasn't made sense to me. I would be VERY disappointed of DCI passed this or (to a slightly lesser extent) the increase to 15 corps in Finals. I mean, BOA makes changes annually to its rulebook, but there are some changes they only make every three years (i.e. band classification). Makes sense that DCI would adopt a similar policy, although if they wind up being against it, that wouldn't hurt either. People have been saying #6 is a little ambiguous, but I think this isn't anything the Rules Congress can't solve. If nothing else, at least put a ban on using shotgun mics. Those things were the worst last season. I'll get to #7 in a moment, but first... Hmmm... I still really like proposal #7, but when paired with proposal #8, there's the problem of making sure every caption within the Music caption is balanced. So I've come up with this... Pass Proposal #7, rename this caption "Ensemble Brass," and rename the preexisting Brass caption "Field Brass." Do not pass Proposal #8, BUT in turn use Proposal #9 to clarify the Music Analysis caption. Keep the two percussion captions as is, BUT pass the verbiage in Proposal #8 that keeps the Field Percussion judge in a safe area on the field. For Regionals and Championships, the Music caption would appear as follows: Field Brass Ensemble Brass Both averaged and divided by 2, like the Percussion judges currently Music Analysis (clarified) Field Percussion Ensemble Percussion Both averaged and divided by 2 For 8-judge panel shows, the Brass and Percussion judges would alternate location between the field and the press box each show. At some shows, the brass judge is on the field and the percussion judge is in the box; at other shows, it's vice versa (percussion on the field, brass in the box). For 5-judge panel shows, if a Brass or Percussion judge is used, he/she should be on the field if possible. So in summary, not too much has changed, just a lot of clarification of my stances as we head into the first day of meethings. I can see as many as 7 of these proposals passing.

  13. The logistics issue really comes down to time/facilities. I have hosted Blue Devils and/or Cavaliers for the past few years before the DCI Annapolis show. I also have several other schools in our area that have hosted or are interested in hosting. We treat hosting as an educational event for our students. This helps keep the costs down for the corps. An open rehearsal is a great way to motivate marching band students at the beginning of the marching band season. We also let the corps put up a souvenir stand during open rehearsals so they can make a few $ while they stay at our facility. There are two challenges in hosting a corps for an Annapolis competition. The first is many of the Maryland schools lack the turf fields desired by most corps. I saw some corps having to rehearse on parking lots with no access to the stadiums in Maryland schools. The second option creates a distance issue. As I mentioned above, I have hosted several corps over the years. However, we are in Virginia and many corps don't like the 60-90 minute drive. It would be great to have DCA back at Annapolis. I fear it won't happen due to these issues along with the hotel costs.

  19. The Cavaliers have been working hard to address the perceived weakness of hornline ( which that seems to be a historical weakness except for the 2000s decade). This year, they're trying to go from a very good hornline to an elite one. They seem to be extremely happy with their off season additions in the area, and from what little snippets I've heard from a camp or two, they seem to be on a mission in that regard. Also, they seem to have added some visual ideas as well. The guard is set to do great things, and the percussion will be fantastic as usual. The design team is reported to already know the show concept as well. I ALWAYS love the Bluecoats as well. Honestly, I don't know who is going to be better next year. I think Cavies' anniversary is going to cause them to try and be as complete and as competitive as possible. So, I'm sure they're going to design in such a way as to make this 2018 season very special. These last several years, they've been trying to build back up to the elite ranks, and now they're going to be gunning for the top.

  20. As opposed to what? A system where insurers have to at least break even, and whatever costs the insured person does not pay are absorbed by the federal government and states (i.e. taxpayers), the practitioners and hospital that served them, those who donate, etc. The burden may only shift to different line items on the same ledgers. One could also make the case that insurance, like any middleman, adds a layer of expense to the entire system... or that it disengages consumers from direct bill paying, comparison shopping, negotiation, and all the other market forces that ordinarily keep prices from ballooning out of control. In any case, not expecting this aspect of the law to affect drum corps in any new way.

DCI utilized a few seconds of each Corps show to highlight a bit of what would be seen/ heard on the CD/ DVD. In Boston's case they utilized a bit of their 2017 closer... featured here :
