  1. 1981 Madison Scouts. We were undefeated until we saw 27th Lancers about 5 weeks into the season. We shocked everyone, including ourselves when we won DCI Midwest finals in Whitewater, WI. Warhawk stadium went absolutely berserk when Blue Devils were announced in 2nd place. Every top drum corps was in this show, which will always be my single most favorite contest that I marched. This is the Madison show that is on the DCI Championship CD's because DCI finals in Montreal was not televised. We beat the eventual champion SCV in either our last or 2nd to last show before DCI Finals, I believe by more than 1 point. We went into Montreal championship week with a good shot to win it all. but fell short finishing in 3rd place. Fun fact... I can still play the entire Snare Drum book. I'll never forget it.

  3. My favorite year was my third season of corps but my first year in Guardsmen. We made finals in 1976 after the corps had placed 31st in 1975. Very exciting. Years later, I had a great time in the Royal-Airs reunion corps in 2002. My knees hate me for it now.

  4. I marched the first three years of Spirit of Atlanta, but my favorite year was our second year, 1978. We had finished in 23rd place at 1977 finals in Denver, so no one was expecting much out of our sophomore effort, despite having a lot of returnees from a year of almost all rookies. Jim Ott began telling us in the spring of 1978 that we had something special, but his words really didn't click with us until we got to the second show of tour, in Cedarburg, Wisc. That night, the crowd was electric, and we began to feed off the crowd's reaction to our still very-new corps from the South. The audience shot to their feet when we hit the company front in Let It Be Me, and remained standing for the rest of the show. It was pretty much like that the rest of the season, which was so much fun because NO one was expecting the sound that Jim Ott coaxed from us. We ended up the year in 6th place, missing the high horns trophy (which would later be named for Jim) by a mere .05. Not too shabby considering that only two of the horn players had ever even held a bugle before our first rehearsal for the previous season.

  7. Marching - 1971 in Garfield. That was an amazing year of drum corps, as a bunch of us broke the old mold and created very radical shows for the era. We were very young, but actually pretty decent, placing 6th at the World Open and 7th at VFW Nats. Just a magical year all around.

  8. Add me to this sentiment. I'm puzzled why anyone would feel the need to be a naysayer and/or pessimistic towards genuine efforts shaped for a corp's betterment?

  9. My kid marched under the Madison umbrella for nine seasons and I had to leave that thread.

  10. yeah, it was pure fluff, and i didn't think there was anything wrong with it i could be wrong, but it felt like blunt and tucci were doing some improv in some scenes, and tried to outdo each other

  11. FWIW the Cadets are doing fewer TOC shows this year which increases their likelihood of getting a win. Last summer Masillon TOC ran opposite of the Erie show. BK won Erie with a 90.6 and Cadets placed 6th with a score of 91.125. In some ways it's a win win for 2018. Fans get to see the Cadets perform while other top corps are in another city and the Cadets are more likely to rack up wins. I know people don't want to hear that the group with the 2nd most championships doesn't compete with the best of the best but the Cadets are still a very good corps.

  13. I feel that way about "The Devil Wears Prada." I enjoy it on a surface level, although every single movement in that film was predictable and completely without thought. It's as though the director was reading from the UCLA Film School 101 Make-a-Movie outline, checking off things as he plodded along. Plus, it was a waste of talent for a great actress. (Mood shift...something lacking in the film.) I'm talking about Emily Blunt.

  14. Those are all above average places to stay, and there are several places to eat within walking distance. Problem is, Dorney Park/Wildwater Kingdom across the street is in full swing, so the amount of rooms available will be small. The real lodging problem in Allentown is not the total amount of hotel rooms within 10 miles, that number of rooms has doubled from the early days of DCI-East. The trouble is, there is no hotel space within easy walking distance of the stadium. Many did walk to stadium from the Holiday Inn downtown but that is closed for renovation this year. Two blocks away from the closed Holiday Inn is the expensive Renaissance Hotel that is sure to be sold out due to the Rod Stewart concert in the attached arena Friday night. Plenty of free neighborhood curb parking both north and south of the stadium. Clean and safe, but several blocks (minimum) to walk. Muhlenberg College lots and Fairgrounds parking still available. A couple hundred temporary paid spaces pop-up around the stadium, too. We have some taxi companies, ride shares, etc., but limited public bus runs. There is no doubt, things get quite congested particularly after the event. New this year, a block from the Ham Fam Diner is a small strip mall with a large Sports Bar named Big Woody's. After event, best bet might be to go there if you plan to wait around for any kind of car service. Traffic right at the stadium is essentially non-existent.

  16. "Fave Year": Was marching years before "DCI". Fave year was 1965. Firts year with Mr Hy Drietzer, (Best horn show BTW), had our most experienced corps, and managed to beat BOTH our crosstown rivals, one of them in the Finals of the World Open, right in old Bridgeport. Wonderfull memories. Elphaba

  17. My point is with a better recruiting effort you could easily double your numbers. You make it sound like all they need to do is wave a magic wand and poof...I suggest stop being so negative on the organization...I am heartened to hear the news that their efforts this season are paying off for them with improved numbers...and with their new invigorated and dedicated instructional staff that will hopefully lead to an improved member experience...

  18. How come the Cadets thread is the only corps thread that's in a constant state of fighting and arguing?

  19. oh there's lots of rumors flying these days. Some are even about show selections

  20. If this is the thread where we brag about knowing show details w/o sharing anything of use, I am here for it. Maybe someone could create a Google Sheet tracking who knows stuff and who doesn't?

  22. Huge shout out to Melissa "Mely" Salguerro for being awarded the Grammy Educator of the Year! She looked great last night in her black evening gown sitting next to James Corden.....just as great as she did when she wore the uniform of the Boston Crusaders where she played mellophone. Eat'em Up, Mely!!!

  23. Rumors today come from a variety of sources..... from those who attended camps.... from DCP...... from Reddit ( and the Sub Reddit )..... from facebook..... from Instagram.....from twitter..... from MM's secretly sharing info with others..... from word of mouth..... and some are simply bogus and made up rumors to cause trouble or mischief or whatever. Because Corps are now secretive like never before, in the absence of good info, something else is made to fill that vacuum. and what fills that vacuum now are rumors. And rumors, by their very nature run the gamut from excellent, very good, to bad, to excessive hyperbole, to outright worthless and/ or completely bogus. But in todays Drum Corps era, in the off season, in the main, rumors are all we fans really have.

  25. As was mentioned earlier today on another DCP thread, congratulations to Melissa " Mely " Salguero who was chosen as " Grammy Educator Of The Year " at the Grammy Awards last nite. She's an Educator Giant. She is also a Boston Crusaders Giant, having marched the Boston Crusaders ( mellophone ) in her youth. Here is another article on her below. This is not only an honor for her, her school, her students, and the Boston Crusaders. its also uplifting to see what can be in store for those who march today in Drum Corps and can dream of making this world a little bit better world when they become full fledged adults in their own right some day. She is truly inspiring for the entire Drum Corps community, imo. People such as her can and do make a difference in this world. http://www.grammyintheschools.com/features/meet-2018-music-educator-award-winner-melissa-salguero

  31. Who is/are "they"? Overall I see very little coming from Boston supporters on any thread, much less the Cadet thread. Who are the Boston supporters you say are disparaging the Cadets? Also, look at the amount of pages generated on the Cadets thread, most of it probably by you actually. A lot of the unhappiness with what is going on at Cadets with their potential program (Bernstein commitment in particular) seems to come from Cadet supporters and alumni, no? At least that's my sense.

  33. Quite an accusation. And somewhat laughable. I would believe that Boston backers are probably less concerned about Cadets than you suspect. If they care at all what Cadets do. I imagine Boston backers are concerned about backing Boston. Cowtown and ThirdCoast can speak for themselves.

  35. that's a good example of what I meant by " Cadets and the Borg seem to thrive on a victim-complex that results in a siege mentality. " but you got me, yep, I'm being paid to hold a mirror up to the Cadets, their fans and their past. I'm now on the Boston payroll Brasso, about my next check, with the Holidays approaching, I expect a bonus

  38. Maybe instead of useless hype, it would be wise to work on your recruiting efforts. For example-you're 1 1/2 hours from Chicago and there is ZERO effort. Might be better than social media false hype.
