  1. I think there's pretty much nothing to see here. "Synergy" is simply as described above...putting the pieces together where the final product comes together in a big way. The use of the word is nothing more or less than the evolution of the vernacular. I attend marching band critiques every fall where the judges (most of whom are DCI judges) use words like "vertical linears" instead of "files"....and we have "Visual Performance" judges, not "M&M" judges. :) Nothing sinister coming out of Boston. Yet.

  5. While on the subject of 10-dollar words that really are worth about a quarter...LOL... Don't you mean "adjudicators"?

  6. No. This has always been and will always be a trendy activity and it's just about using buzzwords. I remember years ago when a judge on a tape used the term "spatial relations" when judging visual. "Spatial relations"? Really? Apparently "interval" was too pedestrian or difficult to say.

  8. Given the fact that we haven't had a single design meeting in 6 years, you might want to check your sources

  9. Now for perhaps a more controversial answer: Today these units are essentially summer music schools on wheels, and operate that way. I never heard of a college student feeling guilty because they transferred to another school. Think drum corps are different because of the history and tradition and pride? Then why do they audition the kids again each year, with no explicit guarantee of acceptance? I've never heard of a corps doing this. There is no guarantee they will accept you again, so why on Earth should the students feel guilty for not going back? The corps themselves have created the current environment of constant upward mobility, and I guarantee the OP's son's corps will take top talent from corps 13 - 45 in a heartbeat and often does. He should feel no more guilt than his director does when he feeds off all those lower corps.

  21. Look at what I just did. There was a tidbit (a teeny one - hardly worth discussing at all) in a Boston Crusader update. I could have thrown my two cents into the Boston thread where it would have been lost to all those who aren't following Boston. Instead I wasted the time of nearly everyone else by creating a new thread to complain about. Isn't that better? Posted this here for illustrative purposes only. No comment required. Definitely no complaints.

  24. Hi All Cadence are really looking forward to coming over to DCA. I spent the weekend at the DCA meeting in December and was bowled over by the love for drum corps in the room and the friendship offered by all directors. We are aiming to make class A finals of course but if we don't there is no sweat. Thee experience is the main thing. See you all in August.
