I posted this on my FB page, and figured I'd share it here as well. This summer of 2018 will be my last one announcing DCA drum corps shows. (For the foreseeable future at the very least.) Various reasons... but mostly, it is simply time. When I started doing DCA gigs in 1983, I never intended it to be a “forever” thing. So I figure 35 years is a nice round number. LOL. My spring/summer schedule, as it stands right now, is listed below. I hope to continue to emcee a spring indoor event or two, and the Crossmen Alumni and Friends performance in Allentown, PA, for as long as they all will have me... and who knows where else I might pop up, if at all. But on the DCA side... it’s time to give “just being a fan” a try. My sincere thanks to the Reilly Raiders, Crossmen Alumni, and DCA’s Hawthorne Caballeros, Reading Buccaneers, and Bushwackers for giving me the opportunity to work with them this year!!! The schedule, as of now: April 21: Burlington, NJ (Reilly Raiders indoor concert) May 12: Elverson, PA (Reading Buccaneers indoor concert) June 16: Wildwood, NJ (Hawthorne Caballeros) July 7: Landisville, PA (Reading Buccaneers) July 14: Clifton, NJ (Hawthorne Caballeros) August 4: Allentown, PA (Crossmen Alumni and Friends event) August 18: Woodbridge, NJ (Bushwackers)2 points

Or Pick-town, or Worthington (!), or, can you imagine, DUBLIN? Dublin Jerome was built in the cornfields west of Dublin, is now full and their plan is to triple its size, and it will be inner-city as the 20 miles from Dublin to the Honda test track becomes another New Albany...1 point

Wow... nice to see some love for that 1980 show!!! One of my all-time PR favorites. Great French horn line that year. And their Finals run was one of the cleanest marching performances ever in the tick-system era. Absolutely stellar execution that night.1 point

No matter what I write, I’ll probably change my mind. 1979: they were robbed. On my first trip to a record store after watching finals on PBS, I purchased Saint Sean Organ Symphony and a LP of Wagner overtures. 1989: I agree with the poster who said any other year this would have been first rather than runner up. 1987: they had an amazing show that year and used some interesting pieces from Tchaikovsky. 1980: a great variety of classical music and 5th must have been disappointing but that was the year Spirit and 27th had their greatest shows, Blue Devils were on top of their game, and Bridgemen has their highest placement. It’s easy for this show to be forgotten. 2012: Turandot. I’m an opera fan, what can I say. Disappointments 2017: some great musical moments but the show theme made me very uncomfortable. 2006: Faust. If you’re going to explore the Faust legend, how can you not include Gounod, Berlioz, or for something different Boito? I said earlier I’m an opera fan. 1997: The Ring. It could be argued this is the most musically ambitious show ever arranged, and it is difficult to shrink 18 hours of music into 10-12 minutes, but pieces that tell the story were omitted and I’m not sure the story was told.1 point

That is an entertaining story! I'm digging the dinosaur references there. Gotta keep busy during the off-season somehow, prior to the show announcements and tour!1 point

One of the most powerful voices in the history of Rock music. I have the original CDs as well.1 point

Ah, the 70s. I'm going to ask Siri to play some Kansas. As a FWIW, there's a pretty good live arena showing of JC Superstar from 2012 on DVD.1 point

No one is gonna top Ted singing Gethsemane. Or maybe not. I have the original London cast album.1 point

Pretty much. I think John Legend is very talented but that role screams for a much more powerful voice. Think of the originals. Ian Gillan, Ted Neely- both of those guys can absolutely belt it out.1 point

jjeffeory...interesting data on the Columbus suburbs enrollment numbers. Can you imagine the MONSTER band program if Southwestern City had stayed with the ONE high school concept!1 point

I picture that piece of music as more of an encore tune... I'm sure there will be both new and old music in the show though... The world will find out soon enough, and I'm sure there will be babies thrown at the field for this show this season! I'll be interested for sure!1 point

I have no idea what their show is going to be this year, but I wouldn’t put too much stock into it. Back when I was in the corps (in the early Jurassic), we would sometimes pull out older charts (from the late Triassic, for example) to play in brass sectionals. Swan Lake from ‘87 cracked us up because Jim Wren wrote “con scrot” on part of the baritone score. (Someone earned a nickname from it, actually.) Also, as you already mentioned, they’ll be playing it at the home show and possibly as an encore piece as well. Still, I think it’s a lot of fun pulling out details like this. I think something similar was posted last year or recently and I responded with the same story. (I’m turning into the uncle that tells the same year after year at Thanksgiving dinner...)1 point

Great judge tape. Big success for all of their musicians that year. Perfect musical balance/blending... all without a sound guy and his laptop.1 point

I know this is a future thread, but I just want to say that I'm listening to the field drum judge tape from the '88 show. God, I've loved The Cadets for nearly all of my life. (Six minutes into that show, the drum judge says: "Guys, I don't think I've heard an error yet". I don't think he said 5 words through the whole show. Astounding.) Thank you, Cadets, for an entire lifetime of (mostly) absolutely stunning entertainment of (usually) the highest possible quality. Back to the 2018 show...1 point

This is definitely one of the hardest to choose only a few. I've got it narrowed down to a solid 3 with an honorable mention and it has taken a ton of thought to narrow it down to these 4 shows. 1. 1996 - This is undeniably one of the most passionate driven shows of all time and they brought the heat every single night that summer. I marched that year and got to see them quite a few times during the summer and watched the show progress was pretty cool. Obviously going into finals they were entrenched in a fight w/ BD for the top spot and ended up tied which I usually have a massive issue w/ but in this instance I don't think you could deny either show a World Championship. 2. 2008 - Spartacus is one of the game changing thematic shows of the last 20 years and the level of playing that they brought to the table was just unreal. To this day one of my favorite shows that PR has ever put on. 3. 1993 - I know that they are overshadowed by Star and Cadets from the magic that was '93 but I am thoroughly convinced that if they had played this show a year later they would have won a World Championship. The overall production was top notch and they were simply outscored by two of the iconic shows of DCI history. Honorable Mention - Quite a few could fit this slot but I'm going to go with 1989's New World Symphony show. This was one of the first shows that I remember falling in love with (at 11) and it still gets a lot of spin in my DCI playlists.1 point

A floMarching season where their live broadcasts don't have tech issues that force me to curse with some very naughty words and have my family march me strait upstairs for some needed soap time as my punishment. So if you're reading this Flo, don't make me wind up like his Nibs :1 point

Add me to this sentiment. I'm puzzled why anyone would feel the need to be a naysayer and/or pessimistic towards genuine efforts shaped for a corp's betterment?1 point
-
More power to the kid and appreciation for corps staff finding accommodating solutions to a tricky and sensitive issue that attempt to balance the interests and concerns of all involved. Not that there are any all female corps in DCI, but I can't help wonder how same or different the sentiment would be for a MTF who wanted to join an all female organization.1 point

Quite interesting that the alums who moan about Madison's placements are also the same alums who make proposals regarding show design that would only harm their placement further. Ignoring a well thought out show design for the sake of "just play(ing) great music" would be a mistake. Not to go all armchair psychologist, but methinks you all are angry and bitter over modern DCI and are misdirecting your anger towards an organization that you all love (Madison Scouts).1 point

I marched in the late 90s and I consider myself a dinosaur based on this premise: When I marched, I thought the shows from 1978 were FREAKING ANCIENT. Now looking back 20 years from 2018, my stuff is freaking ancient. Anyways - just because I'm now a dino doesn't mean I need to come on message boards and #### all over the activity I loved. I still love it. It's very different from when I marched, but it's still Drum Corps. I would love to march in my corps today just like I loved it back then. Anyways...1 point

I am happy Madison returned to finals, and I have no opinion as to who should and should not be replaced, but I would not call Madison's return a "roaring comeback." There were two important factors in Madison's return to finals: Academy did not sufficiently clean their show and in spite of a great effort, Mandarins did not have the fire power needed. I also sat with lots of Madison folks for three days in Indy. I can assure you the marching members indeed broke a sweat on a Friday in semi's as did staff, board members, alums, and current parents. They were very concerned about a strong Academy performance st semi's and learned last year what momentum and a positive attitude can do demonstrated by BAC, which made them more than concerned about Mandarins. Madison knows it can't afford to rest. Troopers are going to have big plans for their 60th, Academy will want to return to finals, Mandarins were caught by surprise at the thought the could even possibly make finals and know what it will take for that to happen, and Spirit is pleased with thus year's progress and has great hopes of retention and a return to finals.1 point

That wasn't a rebuild, that was a New York Yankees spending spree. Unless Madison has Boston's windfall of money, they have no chance of pulling in that level of talent. Go #### yourself. I'm not lecturing, I'm warning that turmoil at the top never works well in the short term for the corps. I'm done with you. [This post has been edited for filter circumvention.
