  1. BAC is steaming into Texas and doing just fine. 2 Days in Belton, TX which has been a great host for several years will feel like a home show. Corps will be treated to a shaved Ice fest after the Belton show. Then onto San Antonio with a stay at CTJ and a dynamite stadium for 4 days. The Corps will be treated to a Texas BBQ on Friday which has been put on by the Winckel family for the past 4 years - son Nick is one of the DM's. We are truly blessed with great parents and the best alumni in the activity! I will travel to Texas with my brother for the 5th year in a row. This stop has been a critical one to help boost momentum. Some day when I write the book "Building A Champion" I will share more insights into critical evaluations, conversations, meetings and planning that took place in San Antonio over the years. Looking forward to cheering on my Corps, and running into some great friends. #BuildingAChampion

  2. I absolutely love the Cavaliers and many other groups. My son is marching with them, but that does not change the fact that I love the show. The very first show that I went to, I heard the moans and complaints. Hello, the show is called On Madness and Creativity. The first part of their show is them in what is supposed to look like straight jackets. The madness - the Conformity and then Breaking Free and then the burst of imagination and creativity and color. Why don't you look at it with that in mind. The bias that stops us from looking at things and people prejudice is truly madness. These kids ...every single one... work so hard, and it is about expression and artistry. I applaud them and I support them. posted from the DrumScorps app

  4. Hey Guys, wouldn't hurt to tweet at the resturants and thanking them for supporting Santa Clara Vanguard. :-)

  5. Exactly. It is self-satire in the same vein of their total skewering of all things "men" in last year's show. They've become masters at popping their faux aura of seriousness and their shows have become exponentially more fun in the process. This year, I also think it works into the overall concept, where there is a journey from very bound, constricted lack of creativity to full expression. And when you get full expression, there will always be a peanut gallery who labels you "freaks" or having gone "too far." They are laughing at all that and I find it very clever. It's my favorite part of the show.

  6. A couple of thoughts. 1. It's a shame that a father would say that to his son, as if when his son turns 18 he could stop him if he wanted to. 2. It takes a lot to "march with that band". A lot of sweat and blood. One would think that someone sitting at a corps show would recognize that. 3. This is America. There are shows I prefer over others and we all have the right to express our opinion. I'm just glad I never pushed my opinion on my own son, who is now finishing his second season with "that band". I wanted him to try out for Spirit of Atlanta and Carolina Crown. Instead he auditioned for Bluecoats and Cavaliers. But somehow, i don't feel this father's comments really had much to do with the show. It's clearly a problem with "that band". Hope everyone has a nice day. Getting ready to head out to San Antonio this weekend to volunteer for a week with "that band" that this self-righteous father finds beneath the dignity of his son.

  8. Was at Broken Arrow tonight...man this show is a monster. I’ve followed SCV since 1999 and this is the best brass line they’ve had since their last championship. This is shaping up to be a special year for them. The horn snap before the hit in the ballad is the moment of the year in DCI. Can’t wait to see how they modify the ending. Take it home Santa Clara!!

  10. Back on topic... I hope there's a cure for whatever is ailing the Scouts. If not this year, then soon. It sucks to lose any corps these days....all bring something to the table. But to lose an iconic group like the Scouts would be quite a blow. I hope we never see that day.

  11. I would hope so...he's a great kid. And as a Music Education Major, I now view his fees as "tuition" because he's gaining invaluable experience on his desired path to be a Band Director/Corps Instructor. If he chooses to march a 3rd season, I will pay all of his fees. And as a parent, I couldn't be happier with the Cavaliers Staff and the class with which the organization is run. What I never tell him is that I consider my volunteering time driving for the corps as "vacation"...I get to see San Antonio, Mesquite, Little Rock, Murfressboro, and Atlanta this year for the price of a little late-night driving. Which means I'm seeing all these fine corps running into Atlanta and upping their game. I'm pretty much like a kid in a candy store for that week. If I had the flexibility, I'd drive all the way through to Indy. But there's some economic realities to that.... :-)

  12. You cannot be serious with this. I would understand your point if this was an organization that was purposely misogynistic. It’s not. Just because an organization celebrates brotherhood and fraternity but also honors the feminine does not make it hypocritical. Because an organization with 70 years of history and successes (and continues to be successful) as an all male organization chooses to not allow women in their corps does not make them sexist. To me this closer is witty and fun. Men read fashion magazines. Men shop. Some wear make up. We cry. A time not to long ago these things were not considered “manly”. Hell...being in “band” was not considered manly. To me this closer makes fun of the modern day man. Reading your post, especially the last paragraph makes me incredibly sad. And no there is not an “inconvenient truth” in anything you stated.

  13. Blue Devils won a significant number of content/rep boxes with their achievement lagging behind (and GE). Watch out for their late game.

  14. The Bluecoats had a great run and got a huge crowd response so I was thinking no group was going to get a better reaction. Blue Devils got a decent response, but nothing close. Vanguard followed and everyone jumped to their feet before the last chord was done. It was electric and definitely the crowd favorite. The closer already has that special something about it - imagine what the reaction will be when they add the last bit to it.

  17. What strikes me odd is that after having thoroughly enjoyed the Cavies show last Sunday, it NEVER dawned on me that anyone could possibly have any gripe about this show. Anyone who has an issue with Madness and Creativity is truly maddening. This show is one of my favorites this year. The singing at the end to the Rufus Wainwright piece is incredible and heartfelt. The musicianship and show design with the changing field palate is as good as anything you'll see on a drum corps field this year.

  18. No complaints. You just deal with the hand you're dealt. You just keep swinging away. Day by day too. Boston is not going away any time soon as a current and future challenger in the upper tier ranks in DCI.

  21. So, about that drum corps event... you know, the actual kids on the field and how they did? I realize this is DCP and tangents will be had, but how did a topic about a particular event turn into a political #### show? Start up a new thread if you want to ##### or not ##### about a corps' historical and current choices.

  22. Yes, thank you. That's the last kind of thing we want causing off topic fights and division. We need to focus on our common interests, like bashing each other's drum corps.

  23. But it is not all in jest. Cavaliers are quite knowingly engaged in social commentary. This kind of satire will inevitably rub some the wrong way and as such, I find it rather daring of the Cavies. They are willing to challenge and even alienate some in the audience in order to express a particular point of view. This is the nature of art, and one of the reasons I admire Cavies so much, regardless of their placement.

  25. People freak out over teenage guard screams and are upset when stank eye doesn’t deter them, yet seemingly, accept the above behaviors... oh what a world! The discussion was to educate these incorrigible young ladies. i believe I would have offset the groans and mumbles with unabashed adoration, yes screaming even toward said group(s). One persons “ you’ll never march with that band is another’s “ You’ll Never Walk Alone.” #notthatfather

  26. I am (and have been) a Visual Performance judge for a few band circuits on the Mainland (I went through an evaluation process, yes) and I am a Music judge/clinician here on the Hawaiian Islands doing mainly indoor venues. On the music judging side I’ve worked with top educators and composers (there are two judges per competition); one was a horn instructor for Blue Stars in 2017. Here’s what helps me: — I recognize my limitations; I would never consider myself qualified to judge Music at the DCI level. — Judging is a way for me to give back to the activity, and I’d like to think most judges (band, DCI, WGI, etc.) share the same philosophy no matter where in the country they may judge. I am not out to “get” a certain group or come off as Lord Vader (“I find your lack of step awareness...disturbing...”) I get very positive feedback on my judges tapes because I don’t “talk” to the staff per se, but to the performers. All my tapes have the same opening spiel, that being, if the director has time, I encourage that he or she let the students listen to as much of the tape as possible. It is all about the kids, after all. — The ability to compartmentalize for future recall. —- The ability to spot errors but communicate effective solutions for those errors in a positive manner *on the fly*. — No biases toward band x or y. — I’m not a Negative Nancy. — I’m concerned for the performers’ safety. (On Tape: “Note for the band moms! With the backup technique the students are using I highly advise checking pant length in the ________ section as their heels are very close to getting caught in the cuffs, and that can lead to nasty falls.”) — The ability to think fast. Really fast. Best example I have ever seen was Alan “The Flash” Christensen saving the Crown snare drummer’s age out performance by running that dropped snare drum aaaaalllllll the way back to that drummer in time for the big hit. Drum handoff at 190 bpm— a perfect 10! (Drum remount on harness: 11!) And then Alan kept on going....doing his job. Then he went back to check on the drummer later. Judges are human. I have inquired about being a DCI judge and keep a phone number handy; I understand the training is thorough and I’m a huge fan of learning no matter how old I am. It would be a way to give back to the DC activity and now that my son (3rd year SCVC trumpet currently) is in college and my medical issues have subsided, upon reflection perhaps it’s time to pull that trigger. Think about it: this is a chance in some small way to help a performer do ______ just THAT MUCH BETTER next time, and then when all those ”that much better next times” are added up and multiplied by the number of performers....what a payoff. I’d like to think other judges see it this way too. Sorry for the length.

  27. percussion isn't bad. You must remember the judge is back on the field all the time now, every show, and there's no upstairs percussion judge. year to year scores mean little, and Crown over the last 2 years has improved a ton! If anything, books are getting ballsier, and sometimes that takes a little longer to clean....but percussion isn't bad by any means this year

  28. Basically it means early on Corps have what might be termed " the bones " of the show out on the field. The later Brass" layering " might involve taking the original brass arrangement and adding nuance to it, changing the dynamics of it, or adding notes to it, and so forth. Early on Shows do not always have the Guards fully integrated into the shows, so Guards begin to add more movement, more dance, more tosses. more flags as a " layering " enhancement to the overall initial show design,... Props begin to be utilized in more comprehensive fashions with marcher additions on them, or more colors added to the props, and so forth. Sometimes the theme needs more messaging coherence, so measures are taken to add more clarity to the message with additional methods to convey the theme at the end. Corps will change a closer. or even add a closer to the earlier show they had on the field initially. All this said, the notion that there will be substantive upward movements in scores. placements as a result of " layering " of the shows is not really supported by history. Sometimes " layering" additions work. Sometimes they don't. Oftentimes however, it really does not move the scores/ placements all that much. We'll read/ hear about a late season change that catapults a Corps to a big score pick up by Championships. But by and large these tend to be outliers. Essentially, the Show a Corps puts out on the field in June is the Main Meal and its mostly that which is going to be assessed for the vast majority of these Corps when it comes to Show Designs.

  29. I hate to break it to you but we are all at some level being played by DCI. They have a wholly vested interest in keeping Corps close together and making incremental “improvements” from show to show. I love drum corps, but the more I watch and participate the less I feel like scores are what we are led to think they are.

  35. Well according to some, the drum corps show was meant to induce thoughts on such topics. If that is true, I don't know how you can entirely separate them.

  38. When a corps is competing for a championship, as Crown often is, then the perception will be that 5th or 6th place in percussion is weak. If Crown was a 6th place corps most years then their percussion would fall in line and people would be cool with it. Crown has fantastic percussion lines...even those that finished 6th or lower. The top 12+ lines in DCI are usually very good. Most high school and college bands would kill to have a line as good as most in the top 15 to 20 DCI standings. So I think the term "good" and "bad" are thrown out too loosely, but this only happens because DCI is competitive and fans want their corps to win. If a fan finds a supposed weakness with a corps they will often describe that element as bad or lacking or faulty or weak. Fans tend to react to numbers given by judges because they see placement and winning and losing. So yes, lots of exaggeration going on when describing DCI's percussion and brass lines (guard too).

  44. If in the last five years you have designed shows for three different WGI classes, you should also know that WGI, along with BOA, is responsible for all that is wrong with drum corps, and perhaps all that is wrong in the world today!

  45. " Layering " is adding to " what is " Its not to be confused with " rewrites ". " Rewrites " are far more risky. The longer the " rewrite " in the show, the higher the risk too. They are time consuming, and take time to clean. It means also " opps... we goofed a bit, and quickly need to scrap what we have and do a " rewrite "" . The numbers of times "rewrites " work out as planned over the years is.... well... ask the Cadets... lol. There are examples where " rewrites " work out with higher scores, but more often times than not, it only put the marchers through unnecessary stress and effort, with ultimately little to show for the " rewrite " exercise in the end. Not always.. but usually.
