  5. Excited about next year. Few age-outs (I think 17 from what I heard), and apparently a lot of returnees (my son may be one - still TBD). I don't know enough to comment on yesterday's Visual Caption announcement so I will defer to others who know more than me (which is most of you). They should certainly be in the hunt to make finals for the first time since 2013.

  6. Man, oh man... and not to sound off from a high tower or something... is that the lesson the activity should be teaching to put talent over responsibility? Sounds too much like College Football for me to be comfortable with it.

  7. Almost all corps use a common data system for financial standings of mms. All DCI directors have access to the corps payment status and history. It's but a mouse click away. They don't want to inherit dead beats into their own organization although one or two are notorious for putting talent over responsibility.

  15. In the portion of the release that addresses the return of the bus, the writer changes pronouns; from "we" to "I" and back to "we" again. I have my suspicions who wrote it and, if so, then it might appear that the interim board is possibly not as engaged as they should be. JMO

  18. Reprises seem to be not as common as they used to be, but there are still so many shows with fantastic reprises that really put the perfect ribbon on a show. It seems like they are usually derived either from the opening piece or the ballad, but I personally find reprises from the opener to be more satisfying because of the symmetry and length of time in between hearing the piece. What are some of your favorites? Two of mine: Phantom Regiment 2003 and Blue Devils 2012

  19. If DCI goes through with the accredidation plan supported by a number of DCP posters, under the subcaption of Financial Stability the payment of staff (past and present) would have to be reviewed by the accreditators about creditors and other bills outstanding, staff and faculty included.

  20. but they do,, for talent...you are right there are 1 or 2 in those upper spots that are notorious for it. I know I had the misfortune of dealing with this subject. I also think it should crossover from ALL aspects of the activity. To many have caved to this situation.

  21. Happened by accident/ignorance when Dad and another Industrial Engineer with 60+ years combined experience took early retirement at the Steel Plant they were at. They had to bring Dad in as a consultant for years afterward to help teach everyone how to do certain things that were never passed on.

  22. GOOD- glad to hear it. It's just basic honesty and fairness to me. Though will they say, "we'll take you provided you meet the contractual obligations you still owe to the last corps you marched with"?

  23. Too true. Also scary to me. Too much the flavor of what happened with Westshore at the end. I just have a deep innate distrust of too much power in one person's hands with any corps after that mess. Many of us do.

  24. So many combinations of wth it could be. GH had control of Cadets but get the idea there were others who ran certain things or at least knew the status of what was going on. With RB micromanaging the crap out of everything wonder if anyone can really tell the status of anything. For instance who controls the book keeping and check writing at the present

  25. This, I find ... veddy interestink. My guess is that corps don't check to see if any potential members owe other corps money. Maybe they view it as "not their circus, not their monkey" unless they owe THEIR organization the shekels. To me, if someone's a deadbeat, it should be a factor, though all they may really care about is having the talent and that they're paid up on their side of the equation. It would take some kind of a DCI list of deadbeats and rules to stop this, which would take more people working on things... which means effectively no one cares unless you're the corps that's been stuffed. Wow.

  26. Likely because all of those areas came under serious DCI scrutiny and have demanded to be put straight by DCI.

  27. The mere fact that there are people owing after the season( putting issues with management aside ) Is very much a reason corps, bands winter programs go down. ASk those who are no longer around. The double edge sword is because of their take everyone policy, which isn't bad , but it also comes with those who can't afford, maybe don't get how hard it is to do what we do, etc etc., Can't get down the road on a hope and a dream. It's a circle of wanting to fill your corps, give everyone a chance but every time comes back to bite you. These noble but unwise views are and have been people who really have a big heart trying to help and believing all who tell them I will pay ( and don't ) they always believe it will come in. Often they put their own money in to get down the road and before you know it TROUBLE surviving. Fault? still management, even with good intentions

  33. "Some members made promises to pay the rest of their tour fees after the season! Well it is now about a month later. Please send a check now, even if it’s only a part. It shows that you are responsible to your commitment." Probably not the time nor the place to be brow-beating members who just finished the kind of summer that it appears that they had, IMO.

  35. Good move in terms of getting the alumni corps out of the heat, and without having to deal with "The Hill" at the stadium venue. And hopefully getting more foot traffic downtown on Sunday morning/afternoon. Saw the alumni show this year and honestly, hardly any corps did any drill. Cabs Alumni and Boston Senior were notable exceptions. I just hope the indoors area is big enough that the corps' color guards can do their work. It would suck if they are left out.

  36. Well, reading this it says "interim board" not a new board is in place. Sounds fluid and looks like they are looking for help. I also notice some corrections about the "bus". I'm sure some here won't step up and say they were wrong. I don't see what is weird at all about it.

  37. Both Arsenal and Genesis have announced on their sites that Key Poulan and Jefferson Lee will be teaming to write their music including Sound. Given that Key has been writing for other units (e.g. Mandarins) will this be a trend for a new direction for music arrangers? Does it merely make formal what has already been happening? How many corps will find Key key?? http://www.genesisdbc.org/creative-staff.html https://arsenalperformingarts.org/…/announcing-our-2019-de…/

  41. Not so sure about design by committee. It's simple, hire someone to design a show who has proven creativity. Pitts definitely does not. IMHO, I don't he is very good at writing music for Drum Corps either. I would bet money that if the corps went after a big name, PR would see people donating money to pay for him/her.

  42. LOL!!! heck... even in those days, there were never even close to 30-40 senior corps at AL or VFW nats. (When there was a VFW title show for senior corps... that went away at some point.) The junior-corps turnouts were much bigger... but even then, some years not a large number at all. Sometimes, our memories are just that... memories.

  43. Please keep the posts directed at a drum corps-related action, even if you go OT a bit. Especially do not make personal attacks on DCP posters for stating an opinion on the topic, whether you agree with the poster or not. Comment on the content of the posts, not the poster in a personal sense. Thanks.

  45. No.I don't believe so. Theres no such thing as a " sigh of relief for lower tier WC Corps ", imo. Their predicament is fundamentally based upon what they do internally within their own organizations to put out the best programs they can based upon the available resources they have and what they perceive as their mission/ goals for their organizations. The decision on the part of both SCVC and BDB is more likely a pause and a " sigh of relief " unto themselves, as clearly its a recognition that both BDB and SCVC were biting off more than could chew financially with the huge costs involved embarking on national tours out of California for Corps in the Open Class Division who are not compensated the same way as the World Class Division Corps are. Thus, its more of a " sigh of relief " for themselves that they finally came to this decision after enduring the financial pressures perhaps longer than should have.

  47. I think it’s a return of the corps original mission for both. Why are kids aging out of feeder corps? Why is there a disconnect between the groups in each?
    1 point
  48. I think some of you are over-thinking the topic. The problem is that PR's programs the last few years can all be best summed up by the word "dull." It doesn't matter WHAT they play in the years ahead - they just have to program with at least a few moments that are so in-your-face cool that audiences will pay attention. The general vibe of late has been going for "artistic" rather than impactful, and they have the scores to show it. SCV shows how to be artistic while still being showy, in the right way - in fact, pretty much everyone in the top 6 this year did the same thing (and all of them except BD and Bluecoats played at least some pieces that would nominally be in PR's musical wheelhouse). Doesn't matter who's on staff; if they approach their first design meeting with the concept of "ok, what are the big GE moments of the show?" (and understand that simply putting 15 people or whatever on quads doesn't qualify), they'll already be off to a better start.
