  2. I recall that Santa Clara did ok under Royer, and his music specialty was strings. Chuck Naffier enjoys the greatest respect among his peers. The Scouts have scored a real coup with this acquisition. P.S. I won the Dream, but only once.

  3. Chuck is an ideal hire for scouts imo not just a talented brass guy but also a well suited arranger should he end up helping with that as well my interactions with him over the years have been quite positive and professional- frankly just seems like a great guy personally as well as an enthusiastic and focused teacher the slam on here about his “real job” is extremely inappropriate and speaks more to character of the person posting the insult than it does to Chuck

  4. Maybe all time... The best teachers I have EVER SEEN are Middle School teachers. Period. Fact. No credible argument can be made unless you are galactically ignorant. I guess that’s how some judge quality teachers. What grade they teach. Stupid. Dazzlingly stupid.

  5. the great Jim Prime retired from teaching a few years ago, He was a middle school music teacher in Elizabeth NJ most of his career.

  6. Well now you're just being silly. Jim Prime has never ever, not ever written quality music. How could he? His day job wouldn't allow for that.

  7. Their brass arranger has no prior drum corps arranging credits... but Chuck Naffier needs a stronger resume?

  8. so because he's a middle school band director means he is unqualified? The guy helped make the colts a finalist, and in fact, they haven't been as good since he left. His work at Crossmen stands out as some of their best years since the 90's, as well as some work with DCA corps. So yeah, he's a middle school band director. He's also earned his reputation as one of the good brass people in the activity

  9. My girlfriend is a high school director. She was moved into the job because she was a very good middle school director. Administrators think everyone's end goal is to have a high school job. It is not. She wishes she could have her middle school job back because she prefers teaching the younger kids and frankly because high school kids think they already know everything and can be extremely difficult to deal with. Additionally, no high school program anywhere can truly be great without top notch middle school feeder programs.

  10. I'm currently an administrator at a middle school. Our teachers are a godsend. It takes a special person to deal with young individuals who are on the cusp of knowing who they are as individuals. Middle school age is the 2nd most productive time of brain growth and development. Middle school-age children began moving from concrete to abstract thinking and to the beginnings of metacognition. To have an individual like Chuck on staff will benefit the Scouts greatly. Educators make some of the best instructors in the activity.

  11. Gail Royer was an elementary school music teacher.

  12. Does research hurt your brain? His day job may not impress you, but maybe his time arranging for Crossmen, Colts, several other corps, and countless successful marching programs might be suitable for you. I get that you must criticize all things Madison, but try knowing about the individual before spouting off on things. It helps make it seem like you might know what you're talking about. Here is his bio since google is hard to use: http://www.madisonscouts.org/2018/10/madison-scouts-welcome-chuck-naffier-brass-caption-manager/

  14. I still don't understand how singing is even judged. It's clear where brass and percussion featured soloist and small ensembles fit for scoring, but voice? Not at all. I'm not talking wishy-washy "well it's probably under GE". I mean something explicitly written in the rules. I'm not anti-voice at all, it's just becoming such an integral part to so many shows, I'd like to know exactly where it fits in the scoring rubric. -

  17. My goodness. Read his resume. He’s very accomplished. He’s a great add for the Scouts. Jim Elvord thinks he measures up and that’s good enough for me.

  18. Big tactical error for the Crossmen, because when they get towards the end the season then the staff can't push them harder than normal.

  20. My elementary/middle school band director was the finest music teacher I ever had, and it's not even close. I'm also willing to bet that he's a better brass player than 99.9% of the people teaching in the activity, most of them also by a wide margin. The idea that someone would automatically be unqualified to teach the Madison Scouts brass because they teach middle school band is one of the more laughably ridiculous things I've seen on this board.

  21. Giving those young musicians a solid base as a middle school music teacher. How dare he. Oh the horror!

  22. (late post, I know) I am really randomly stoked for Robert W. Smith to be with the Colts this season! I've generally really enjoyed his work with the Troopers (and of course his regular concert work). The Colts have honestly been doing really solid work since 2014 (in my opinion). Who knows who'll bring the secret ingredient that makes the special sauce for a Colts Finals performance. I'm just happy to see one of my favorite arrangers working with one of my favorite groups! 🙂 Yay drum corps!

  23. Hopefully Horn Teacher will read this thread and add his thoughts since he's been teaching music coming on 25 years. Even as a brass guy, he's taught and had percussion sections succeed and win awards.

  24. If your Wow... is a WOW!!! I agree with you, if not, I have to stand up for Middle School Teachers..... I taught middle school for six years. If it had not been for a career change that still involves education to some degree, I would probably still be teaching middle school and loving it. As it is I still have a considerable amount of associations with young people and schools, though my involvement is more administrative. As a matter of fact right now I am taking a bit of a breather. The school I am involved with offers photography lessons after school to gasp, middle school aged children, and I am preparing the lesson and activity. Middle school children are often inquisitive learners, highly motivated if an interest is generated, and respectful if you respect them. If you treat them in a condescending manner, they will react. If you do not set up boundaries, they'll take control. So what could a middle school band director offer Madison? 1.One of the biggest drop off rates between musicians transitioning from one grade to another is between 8th and 9th. High school offers more sports and extra curricular activities. An enthusiastic band director can be key to a successful high school program and more importantly, a key to making music a part of a child's life. 2. Though this could vary from state top state due to certifications, school systems do not audition teachers and give the high school programs to the most talented and the least talented the kindergarten programs where small xylophones, triangles, and toy drums are the norm. You teach based on your certification. I know a woman whose day job is teaching elementary school music, and she's great at it. She also has a CAGS and plans on a doctorate in choral music and has directed choirs and college groups. She teaches simply because she loves the joy of teaching young ones music. 3. Middle schools are more likely to work collaboratively and than high schools which are often run more departmentally. If Madison feels it needs enthusiasm, talent, and a collaborative staff, a middle school band director may be a great choice.

  25. Never won the Dream. But I'll gladly take the three DCA titles my corps won during my time there instead. LOL. Loved the Dream. An atmosphere unmatched by any other show... even though, quite honestly, it was rarely a "best of the best" lineup, from top to bottom. Some great corps, some not-so-great corps. But always fun. OK... back to our regularly-scheduled-scheduled topic.

  30. Boys! BOYS! If I have to turn around this car around you are BOTH going to get a whoopin' when we get home! Oh, and neither of you has a post history on which one could build a reasonable post "personality" but, clearly, dans has a significant lead in establishing one. So "pot and kettle" and all that...

  31. Yes, colts when they went from a corps you'd skip to finalist. Crossmen during their best years not named 1990-1998. Yeah, he's a slouch I guess. I mean he got the gig and no one knocked on your door. Plus, if a name is happy where they are, and I don't see a lot of high profile names that would fit your criteria looking for gigs, who are you going to call?

  32. Is he or is he not a middle school band director? He taught the Colts and Crossmen. Woot woot. Not exactly a world class resume. I was all for change but this one seems risky. Then again, things cant get much worse for the Scouts. BUT...Chuck is a jazz guy so if Madison goes back to jazz I'm in.

  39. Because...you know...the entire color guard will want to take time off to go shopping or watch "The Notebook" or something. Yes, as Brian mentioned I was channeling the Flo commentator as a joke: The commentator (who was later fired), said during the Eastern Classic that as an all male corps, the Cavaliers have something up their sleeve for finals week because the fact that they're all male means the staff can push them harder than normal.

  40. Yup, there are also the comments on here. It’s evident anytime someone uses the word “prancing”. Of course they’ll deny it but most of us know that’s a code word.

  43. Oh, one thing I would propose: corps can only perform music that they have the rights to include in the Blu-rays. This modern trend of full minutes of silence in the world championship production is ridiculous. DCI needs to figure that out.

  44. Lots of people have to learn another instrument if they want to make a top corps. Only 6 tympanists can play their chosen primary instrument with a top-6 corps; any others who want in must learn something else. There are no spots anywhere in drum corps where you can play French horn for the whole show, so even those few horn players who feature on the instrument in DCI must learn something else for part of the show. You know what locks people out of making a top corps? An inflexible attitude that places their personal desires above the good of the corps.
