  1. This has nothing to do with the thematic ideas of the show. It is only about the use of realistic-looking firearms on the field, especially in the threatening way they were used in this show. They could have gotten a similar idea across without the guns. The thematic ideas of the show is irrelevant to the discussion. Your attempt to lump people who disagree with you into the same bucket as those who talk about "snowflakes", etc...is in poor taste and totally unfair. Some of us are very modern in our viewpoints, but we realize that in 2018 you just can't bring even toy guns onto the field, especially in a scholastic setting.

  2. Look at your DVDs again. There are significant differences between 1979 and 1980 Lancers.

  3. Another one from the "Well it seemed like a good idea at the time" department... Back in the 80's I was judging a band contest in Connecticut, and one of the bands opened with the theme from "Robin Hood". They had a band parent wearing a Robin Hood costume stationed in one end zone, and as the show started the parent shot a REAL hunting arrow over the top of the band. I don't know how many muscles the chief judge pulled in trying to race over to the guy to make sure he did not shoot any more....and the band director of the band was blasted by just about everybody.

  4. I was at World Open and CYO Nationals that year. I can't remember too much of a negative reaction at World Open, but I can remember a distinct reaction at CYO Nationals. The audience went wild, especially with the "Chorus Line" ending, while people around me thought it was the end of drum corps. I do remember on the bus ride home from CYO Nationals, a group of us told the drill instructor of our CYO band we wanted a show just like the Bridgemen, though I said I wanted a show like 27th, which could have cost me my life at that time since our percussion instructor was a former Boston Crusader, a Hall of Famer who I believe still held in high esteem in the organization (27th and North Star were fighting words, though Bridgemen and Garfield were pretty close too). Well, he obliged our request, invited us to come to practice the following night and hour early so we could get started on next year's show. We then had to do an hours worth of extra warm up exercises and drill basics because that's what Bridgemen and 27th did to be perfect.

  7. I'd be curious to know if people feel any differently about Carolina Crown's 2016 show now than they did two years ago. A number of fake guns were pointed at people in that production. A number of fans here were upset when the corps changed the ending so that the hero didn't shoot the villain. (I'm not saying that show, set in the past, needs to treated as equivalent to this show, set in the present. Or in the recent past?)

  8. Hey, I live in Brookhaven and I can add a little information to this. The show that Forest Hill band performed was in reference to the movie John Q. The image that is going around happened towards the end of the show. The picture does not represent them shooting cops at all. I have seen the full video and it has been taken out of context. The show has been performed a number of times before they came to Brookhaven. The four band members on the ground got up and ran away. Those holding the guns put them down and started praying. Instead of using the toy guns, they could have used rifles. But the photo has been taken out of context. Yes, we did lose two officers but the FH show was nothing in reference to that.

  9. Where did I, or anyone here, say your opinion is irrelevant? For me, it is dead wrong, but you can hold whatever opinion you wish. You absolutely did lump people together unfairly...in my own opinion...with your snowflake and old timer comments about those who disagree with you. Nothing wrong with bucking the "establishment", whatever that is. This thread is about the use of realistic-looking guns in a scholastic band environment. Whatever the theme is, there are other ways to convey the desired point without that element.

  10. Speaking of hammer and sickle, this band from South-Central PA raised a ruckus a few years back.... https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/145690/marching-orders-high-school-bands-communist-arnold-ahlert And as my way of protest, when I play World of Tanks... all of the Soviet and Chinese Red Stars are covered by other insignias...even stuck a Czech flag in protest on one of them. Personal thing, I guess.

  11. I know there were some rather pithy comments about a coffin of some sort from a couple of ex Y-R "characters" at Westshore.

  13. then why don't you explain your meaning. And to be clear imo saying someone "being holier than thou" is an insult. Not to mention the go get a hot dog comments. We are exchanging opinions here and both sides should be able to express themselves without snotty comments. Freedom of speech allows people to say unpopular things but it also allows others to say they totally disagree or are upset with what was said.

  14. I think this describes the original staff of the Carolina Crown very well. Most of us were still there when the corps won the Div. II DCI World Championship in 1993, And a large portion of us were still there when the corps made DCI Finals the first time in 1995. If I remember correctly, the corps started out in 33rd place in 1990, then went 25, 25, 21, 17, 11.

  17. They were depicting a scene from the movie John Q. http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2018/oct/06/forest-hill-band-shooting-skit-draws-rebuke-jackso/ Unfortunately, the only photo shown in ANY story on this is the one. I’ve seen ZERO video of of this show, not even of this part of the show. It’s being taken out of context. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t insensitive, but it’s out of context.

  19. Sure, that's a difficult image to look at, but what is the context of the show? Are we forgetting about all the hangings, shootings, stabbings, and depictions of slavery in past DCI shows? I don't really see this as being any different. I do however think that whatever is going on in that show is probably a bit inappropriate for High School. Walking around campus with fake rifles is never a good idea.
