  1. PR needs to continue to embrace its long running classical style. That's what makes them unique, interesting and popular. There is no value in all corps using the same or similar musical & visual style(s). Immagine how mono-tone (boring) it would be if all corps performed a variation of a common style. We are already getting a similar effect with the use of electronic instruments and amplification. The sound quality they produce is so unnatural off-tone compared to the pure and natural sounds of brass and percussion, which is the primary attribute (main draw) to drum corps.

  2. Having now seen the show in its entirety, I can say it works for this show. The real problem with TS is they were dirty EVERYWHERE, and it may seem like they are using these digital boards as an eye trick to lure eyes away from the dirt. The other problem is when one of these boards goes dead like it did when I watched the show. It was a distraction that could not be ignored. If they clean the heck out of their show and ensure that none of these boards goes on the blink during their show, they are onto something here....as expensive as it is. The programming of the boards in conjunction with the music was spot on....it worked.

  3. I made a list of DCA Corps Open Houses and dates to aid in people finding more details. Please update with details once you have them and I'll edit the main post. I don't really know how to import a table so I'm just going with a bullet list. Here is the GOOGLE DRIVE SHEET : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bAqyTfrAe98lMS24xke_C1Bt4l7iKm16cZqdJd60H2k/edit?usp=sharing . DATES ARE IN BOLD | FOLLOW THE LINK FOR DETAILS I removed the bullet list below because it was too much to update. I've updated the list and added info from five more corps. I'll create some graphics and maybe a short video too.

  4. we have more variety in musical choices the last 3/4 years than we had from 1994-2010. The key isn't what they play, but how they arrange it and design it.

  5. Contestant Hila Saxer mentioned on today's episode of Jeopardy that her family members are huge drum corps fans, and stated that a California corps, the Santa Clara Vanguard won this year's championship.

  6. 1) There were also many corps pre-DCI that were not able to manage to budgets, due to the very shoe-string nature of the activity. Corps failed all the time through the 50's and 60's pre-DCI. One difference from later on is that if a corps failed in one place, another sprung up nearby. Once that slowed own, the corps numbers started to decline. 2) There were also many staff members who WERE scholastic music teachers pre-DCI. Many were not, but many were. 3) True 4) Not to mention scholastic-sponsored fund-raising as opposed to a mysterious "outside" activity like drum corps. School budgets are often paying stipends to some staff, just like coaches, but at least around me most of the design and props and stuff is not funded by the district, but by the band parents efforts. Bands with large staffs of techs, etc, also use parent-raised money to pay those people. 5) Yup. Agree.

  7. In 2019 we will host production camps in both the Sunshine State of FL and the Great State of Texas! This will allow for more cost effective flights and more equitable travel requirements for our brass and percussion members… it will also allow for our FL and TX alums and fans to engage! 10. I am going to be upfront about my bias....I love this band. Yes the digital signage is expensive, but using them as a prop on the field is no worse than what we are already seeing in Drum Corps now. They are moving them around just as easy (and tasteful) as non digital props. It is just another visual layer to a show as far as I am concerned. I cannot wait to see their whole show.

  11. Bonus. She's an ASL interpreter. The 'mostly deaf' person I am who uses an array of technology to hear drum corps enjoyed her presence.

  12. Wow, 14 pages on a marching band show, using props, in a drum corps forum.

  13. I am very happy I taught the band I taught for 24 years. Our parents were ALWAYS positive to the other bands, no matter who the band was. That whole over the top sort of thing is, I am glad to say, alien to us.

  20. So I was wearing my cadets shirt yesterday to my local beach...yes I love the cadets too...and I'm proud to wear their stuff as well as my umpteen Boston apparel...this girl walks up to me and asks me if I marched Cadets...well I had say no to that but I told her I did march corps...well she was telling me about her marching band experience and championships at MetLife Stadium and said she didn't march corps because she was a woodwind player...well anyway it was a nice conversation...anyway she was saying to me that the Cadets super-marketed themselves at the show over the last 4 years...I said something along the lines of asking was it USBands...and she said yes..well I told her that the parent organization yea.org owns that and she was saying to me...wow...that explains a lot and had no idea...Just got me to thinking...maybe a lot of the younger people don't make the connection between the two organizations...Well anyway that is my cadet and drumcorps story for this week...haha
