  2. Some Items of Note: July 13 is the first date when all 22 World Class corps compete on the same day. The others are July 20, July 27, and August 8. Excluding the impact of Oregon Crusaders & Pioneer, there are a total of 26 fewer World Class corps performances in 2019 than 2018. The average number of performances per corps in 2018 was 26; in 2019, it is 25. Boston Crusaders decrease the most from 30 to 25 followed by Blue Knights (27 to 23) and Crossmen (28 to 24). Music City increases the most from 21 to 24. No other corps increased by more than 1 show. The Cadets will appear in the most shows at 30 followed by Blue Stars and Bluecoats at 29. Seattle Cascades will appear in the fewest shows at 18 followed by Jersey Surf at 20. Blue Knights is the final 2019 finalist to debut on June 28. Last year’s medalists will compete head-to-head for the first time July 16 in Broken Arrow, OK. The best June indicator of potential placements will be June 29 when all but two corps are in action (Jersey Surf and Seattle Cascades). For anyone interested in seeing a grid version of the schedule with total show tallies by corps and date, you can access it here.

  4. For anyone interested - the 2018 downloads are now available on the Marching Music Downloads website thru DCI...that means the CD's should be shipping soon.

  5. It’s so clunky. I give up after three or four pages and tell Jim to look at it for me.

  6. We had Robert Vaughn (Man from UNCLE) doing local law firm commercials “tell them you mean business”. Wonder how close he ever got to Harrisburg lol.

  10. Good for them. They’ve been horribly damaged by his malfeasance.

  11. Just letting them know ahead of time that they may not be spinning the traditional equipment. The person can then choose if they want this or not. actually good for them for letting people know early.

  13. Saw on FB the news that legendary drum corps PA announcer Wes Hobby has passed away. IMO, he was, and will remain, the all-time greatest. No one quite like him, before or since. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/stamfordadvocate/obituary.aspx?n=milton-hobby&pid=190750993&fhid=3958&fbclid=IwAR1aSoTvUVR7t85clygDWHwpFe3rUXX9NLqPhTUva2pbALoEZNS4WwQu_HE

  16. My last year marching DCA was 1982... Wes was the announcer for the championship that year, in Allentown. It was so cool to end my drum corps competition career by hearing Wes Hobby announce us as the DCA champs!!!

  20. Good point about the "triggering" thing, age-related. I certainly hope he doesn't try for "age discrimination." In his case, there probably are even some ambulance-chasers who wouldn't touch that one. LOL.

  21. RIP Michigan City. Decent stadium in a terrible location, and trying to have a 15-corps prelims there was just an exercise in frustration. Bring on the new digs! Mike

  24. Mandarins dropped the cymbal line for 2019, it was smart of Pacific Crest to expand! (Have heard most of the cymbal line will be headed to PC)

  25. Idk background info, and I agree the Michigan City stadium is a fantastic venue. We watched Bluecoats rehearse in the IWU stadium last year and it’s also a great stadium/set up with great space for an activity like this.

  26. One of the things I like about the 2019 schedule is that the Crossmen will be at the Chester, PA show. This show is in Delaware County, which was where the corps was born in the 70's out of two smaller corps. For the early years, they practiced just a few miles from the stadium in a parking lot at Boeing. The parking lot was lovingly called "Boeing Beach".

  28. Ah... I gotcha. I live near Winchester, VA, so I usually take a bunch of my students up to the Annapolis show. If you do decide to take the jet ski up, let me know! You can sit in the nosebleed section with us! 😄 lol

  29. With both OC finals and the early-season show Cavaliers host there gone, I suspect the issue might be on the venue's side. I'll miss the place. Not only is there a Dairy Queen right next to the stadium, but my corps' housing site had an ice cream vending machine in it (yes, this was in a public school. Michigan City High School students are pretty lucky). I ask for a moment of silence for all the ice cream that will never be eaten this summer.

  30. I take it you have never served on a board. I have served on multiple boards, both for profit and non-profit. In the case of the latter, these are unpaid positions, and it is not typical to go through every contract unless there is a reason. You don't just ask to see every contract. CEO compensation is typically handled by an executive committee, and key clauses reported to the board when they become relevant (such as in a renegotiation) before a vote. That's when stuff like this becomes known. And all of the other #### would qualify as termination for convenience. It's really easy to terminate for convenience (except in the case of a union labor agreement). It's really hard to terminate for cause.

  31. Engaging in conduct that produced beaucoup bad publicity for YEA & a multi-count criminal indictment isn't cause? When he used his position in YEA to commit the alleged crime? Yes he is innocent until proven guilty, but I would hope ANY board would have a higher standard.

  32. Hampton Roads VA. Had annual show here regularly until the current San Antonio - Atlanta - Allentown - Indy rut. Closest is Annapolis which is 200 mile drive each way (not far as crow flies, but gotta get over Chesapeake Bay & a bunch of rivers & there are only limited routes. Although it would only be 100 miles on a jet ski. hmmm....)

  35. It would be nice to know the schedule before camps start, but I doubt there'll be any big revelations for my corps beyond maybe more TOC shows. I'm sure if we were doing West Coast, it would have been announced by now, and we did both mini-Western tour (just going to Denver rather than all the way to California) and East Coast/Florida pretty recently. Besides, we're spending a fair amount on new food and equipment trucks, so sticking to a typical Midwestern tour seems like the most financially sound option. As for tour as a whole, the only major change I could see happening would be the Atlanta regional getting moved due to the reported high costs of a venue, and even that seems fairly unlikely, and it would be a shame because that's one of the coolest places I've ever performed. Not only is the stadium itself rather impressive, but there's a hill covered in goats that you walk past to get to it from the lots!

  36. Interesting- My guess is that as time goes on, the hardware/tech will improve/become more durable. Than again as Jim intimates, a lot of these companies crank them out and it's cheaper to just replace the bad ones and hope the next one works than just build them to a high quality level. My guess is that the ones Jim's Brother in law got were made of Chinesium.

  39. Though some people loved the uniforms, others were less than thrilled, and the uniforms were ordered prior to someone’s departure. So there was one reminder. That being said, as someone who saw Cadets early in the last season and at Allentown and Indy, the changes throughout the season made sense and worked, which was a huge departure from the recent past, so how a complete season without the former director will be interesting to see.

  40. yup. Having the entire planning process without interference will be a good thing.

  41. ...he wasn't gone until April. That's the majority of the design season, and most camps. IIRC, the new stuff after he left was revised lyrics for the singers, and an entirely new back half of the show.

  42. Since GH was gone early this year, he didn't have much influence on this past years show. If he did, it was minor, and probably changed for the better.
